Fenton fired as Wild GM. Not sure what in the hell is going on there. They'll be on their third GM in two years.

Could they not have done this before he signed Zucc away from Dallas, costing us their 1st round pick?

National TV games announced and the five American teams in the Pacific Division have has many games as Central Division alsorans Chicago and Minnesota combined (26).

I get the time zones are an issue, but it feels like NBC isn't even really trying here. (I also don't understand why they can't just show more home west coast games in anything other than the Wednesday night time slot. Does NBCSN really have so much compelling programming that they couldn't have a regular Friday night 10 p.m. time spot to showcase west coast teams?)

And don't get me started on Philadelphia having 20 national games, more than VGK, San Jose, Anaheim and Arizona combined and four more than any other team in the NHL (Pittsburgh with 16 was next).

The NHL declines its option to reopen the CBA.

The PA have until Sept 15. I hope they decline as well and we get hockey until at least 2022.

Never know what the PA will do. I know they hate the escrow system but with a new team coming in (and 20 new jobs) seems like it would make sense to let Seattle get its first season in, let the CBA play out and work on smaller stuff like the 22 Olympics under the current CBA.

The Hockey News is reporting that the Players' deadline might be extended to Jan 1 and that both sides are working on a deal to amend and extend the current CBA to 2025

https://thehockeynews.com/news/article/ ... on-horizon
To assume this will lead to a new agreement would be putting the cart miles ahead of the horse, but there is legitimate reason for optimism that this will indeed lead to the league and the players to extending the current agreement and ensuring labor peace until the end of the 2024-25 season.

Here’s why: because the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association are reportedly already elbow-deep in negotiations. The league’s decision not to opt out clearly puts the ball in the players’ court, since they now have until Sept. 15 to make their decision on the matter. But a good number of signs point to the two sides agreeing to extend the players’ deadline by a couple of months, perhaps to Jan. 1. In the meantime, the two sides would continue to negotiate an extension to the current deal, one that would likely run three more years beyond the current 2022 expiry date.
Article also says the proposed plans on how to mitigate escrow will be released Tuesday.

The Gritty ROI is high.

But as a Caps fan more than an NHL fan the NBC coverage has treated me alright the last few years. However, I really do like the Caps local broadcast team way better than the NBC crew. While the NBC Camera guys are great, the NBCSN local team of Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin call a good game and have a great sound.

Beninati may be my favorite play-by-play guy right now. He calls lots of lacrosse after hockey season is over and just blows the ESPN teams out of the water. I have also heard him do WTT tennis, football, and a bunch of other random events. He is just a pro who clearly prepares for whatever he is calling.

Considering how little he got I wonder what the holdup was. It was pretty clear he was only going to sign with San Jose. I figured the holdup was because his one-year deal would have put them closer to the cap (I think they have about $5M in cap space left before signing Thornton?)

The NHL's garbage officiating might have saved Shea Theodore's life. (If VGK hadn't been eliminated, he wouldn't have been drug tested by the IIHF for the World Championships and that's how he was diagosed with testicular cancer.)

That either really sucks or just sucks, depending on whether Eaves is recovered enough to play were it not for his cap hit.

Marner would not sign that.
You've gotta think he would have prefered $10.15MM for 4 over $10.9MM for 6, no?

At the time (July 1) he would have wanted 6 years and over 11. I believe that over time it's been negotiated down to this.

Jared Spurgeon. 7 x 7.575M

Maybe I'm overly naive or optimistic, but I think the players and owners finally realize they have a framework that is largely working. Revenues and salaries are up, not as many teams are bleeding money.

My guess would be both sides are thinking they can hopefully iron out the differences regarding escrow payments and some of the other stuff in the next CBA, but that it makes more sense to kick that can down the road for a few more years.

The one thing I'd like to see worked out is a framework for allowing NHL players in the Winter Olympics. The owners have no motivation for doing so, but I think it does add interest in the league.
