Toni Morrison
88. I haven't read as much of her work as I should have.

Re: Toni Morrison
FYI: This is the only place reporting this, which seems weird for a Nobel Laureate.

Re: Toni Morrison
My wife did her honor's thesis in English in college on Toni Morrison's works. I think she sent the finished paper to Morrison and got a brief note back. She was a hell of a writer (both of them, actually).
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Toni Morrison
I can only say this here.
When I saw the thread I thought to myself, "why do I think she had already passed?" I then look up Alice Walker. Nope, she's still alive.
Then about ten minutes ago it hits me. Maya Angelou. That's who I was mixing her up with in my head. I know my black colleagues wouldn't have judged me. I would have hoped one of them would have busted my balls saying "what, all black female authors look the same?"
ETA: Amazing authors. All three of them.

My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

Re: Toni Morrison
I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I've never read any of her stuff. Where is the right place to start?
Re: Toni Morrison
This goes back to me not having any black teachers, but same question.

Re: Toni Morrison
I have only read Beloved, but several others have echoed Rush's suggestion. I will probably try to find that one soon as well.

Re: Toni Morrison
I think my wife's favorite was Song of Solomon. I believe I read that one and either The Bluest Eye or Beloved (it's been a long time). Both were really good. She's a great writer and she writes about a world that the vast majority of Swampers know little about.
Totally Kafkaesque
