We have a screened in back porch, and we had the inside door open to it this evening because it was beautiful. I was out there drinking and reading and heard a banging and looked up and the dumbass had his head and donut stuck on one side of the door and the rest of his body on the other. Before I could get to him he gave a big tug and the donut popped off. He pushed the door open with his snout and went out to sniff and piss around.
I hope the donut doesn’t get in Gus’s way when he plays poker!

Thanks everyone. Yesterday was actually harder than Monday but today I think we're turning the corner.

I had been saying I'll feel better when we get his ashes. We've had all of our dogs cremated. It's always taken a week or two to get the ashes back to us. Shockingly our vet called today and said his remains were ready for pickup! Business must be slow...

Posting just because our dog we adopted last year does this too if you stop petting him. He'll take his head and try to force your hand back to petting him.

Thanks Gents. We were able to spend 13.5 years with the little guy and he was 15 when he passed yesterday. We rescued Duffy and our other pup Bailey on the same day, and they’ve probably spent a total of 10 hours apart from each other. Bailey is doing ok for now if his appetite is any indication.

Mrs. Cerrano says we’re never getting another dog because the grief is too much. I get it, but I will remind her (later) that if you weigh the despair we currently feel against all the joy Duffy brought us over 13+ years, it’s not even close. People say we have him such a good life, but really, it’s the other way around.

Sorry to hear it.

Duffy looks like he was a very good boy indeed. And you're right - the pain now is intense, but it can't compare to the years of great friendship.

(Love that name - I had a fantastic Westie named Duffy when I was younger.)

So sorry to hear this. One thing I'll say is we only adopt senior rescue dogs now, which seems counterintuitive. Losing them is never easy or even easier because you had them for less time. I cry every time we lose one, but after a few days I remember we gave an old dog a good home for a couple or three years or however long it ends up.

I don't know if I could adopt a senior dog. Our doggo is almost 12 and our three cats are each 15. Love them all. But, every one of them has some sort of health issue, and sometimes it is exhausting.

I'm 100% on board with doing this too. I think old dogs are the best; I'm more than willing to go through the pain of losing them after just a few years if it means I give a dog a good home.

I'm sorry to hear as well, Cerrano.

We do spend a little more than we would on some prescriptions and stuff like that, but the understood agreement (between my wife and myself and between us and the dog(s) are that we're not going to take any extreme financial measures if something bad happens.

Sorry, for some reason I thought Sancarlos made the comment. I respect the hell out of you for adopting older dogs. I still volunteer at a rescue, or will once this shit ends, so I always appreciate seeing the older dogs get homes when we have litters of puppies available. I would never adopt a puppy, but an older dog is commendable move.

My parents dog Ali Jo, an amazing (mostly) Australian Sheepdog, know something’s up. But tonight was the first time I’ve noticed her actively scanning the group for my Dad. Just back and forth looking for him. We bonded over the road trip I took with my Dad from Santa Cruz to Austin after my Mom’s fall in 2018, so I’m claiming ownership if my Mom can’t handle it.

Its tough to watch them start to come to grips with the absence. And Aussies are really bright dogs. Tugs at the heartstrings a little bit.

God damn it Izzy!!

Third time in the past couple of months that she ecstatically rolled in something absolutely revolting. She was covered in shit today from the base of her neck to the middle of her back. My car is NEVER going to smell the same.

Fuck shitty dog owners, especially the ones like my neighbors who let their dogs incessantly bark for 15+ minutes before they get off their fat ass and do anything about it.
