Ohio State seeks to trademark the word "The".
I'm sure they're doing this solely for the benefit of its student athletes.

Hopkins is, technically, The Johns Hopkins University. I wonder if they'll weigh in...

Re: The OFFICIAL FFS Thread
I have a few questions:
1) Why can't they just put "the" on all their merchandise without the trademark? I can't imagine anyone suing them.
2) Wouldn't they be unable to stop unlicensed merchandise as long as "the" wasn't there?
3) What's the money angle? There can't be competition for The(TM) name. Is this really about vanity?

Theoretically, if they trademark it, they could force a school such as The Johns Hopkins to pay them a royalty to include THE before the rest of the name.Rams Fanny wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 2:01 pm I have a few questions:

...which if so, seems like it would make for a pretty clearcut case for the Patent Office to deny the trademark. I doubt they want to set a precedent on trademarking fucking definite articles.sancarlos wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 2:53 pmTheoretically, if they trademark it, they could force a school such as The Johns Hopkins to pay them a royalty to include THE before the rest of the name.Rams Fanny wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 2:01 pm I have a few questions:

They tried that with Ohio University. Several years ago, OSU tried to trademark "Ohio" and eventually lost a lawsuit over the attempt.sancarlos wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 2:53 pmTheoretically, if they trademark it, they could force a school such as The Johns Hopkins to pay them a royalty to include THE before the rest of the name.Rams Fanny wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 2:01 pm I have a few questions:
