Never thought Sarah Silverman covering a Frightened Rabbit song would be so moving, yet here we are. The non-singing/spoken word-ish delivery actually elevates the song a bit I think.

This song makes me want to kick a hole in the wall. It can't be played loud enough.

I know it’s “old” but I’m obsessed with “Your Best America Girl” by Mitski. I hadn’t seen that video and it’s fucking awesome.

She's a big-time derivative of St. Vincent but she's awesome.

One of my best friends is Vietnamese/Hungarian and some of the stories she’s told me about growing up in America make me identify with Mitski. Especially that song.

(For all intents and purposes, basically Vietnamese/American in case that’s not obvious. She was born here. But I don’t want to alter her dad’s nationality for the purposes of the story)

I have nearly 100% confidence Mitski would say the same and St. Vincent would call it a massive compliment.

(Be the Cowboy was more or less a concept album expanding on "Prince Johnny".)

I feel like this is being taken as derisive versus trying to label it the first true branch on a new but influential tree. All music is derivative. Mitski is great but if St. Vincent never existed, Mitski would almost assuredly sound atleast somewhat different.

So, Mitski is or is not the only motherfucker in her tree?

Also, Blaise Bailey Finnegan III. And I silently judge people who don’t “get” post-rock. I gotta admit that.

I mean my wife hates it so not in an enemies for life thing but I question if you can get what music is really capable of if you just dismiss all post-rock.

So is post-rock similar to Americana or does Isbell qualify for multiple genres?

I wasn't really commenting on post-rock because I don't really know what it is. Just saying I've been wracked with anxiety for a couple of weeks now.

Sigur Ros, This Will Destroy You, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky are my favorites. This article has some pretty good examples (including these):

So, basically anything that sounds like it would play as the credits roll in a movie? You can judge me all you want, I guess.

For the record I was riffing on a St Vincent lyric in my addition re: Mitski being some sort of progeny from the St Vincent tree - not making any judgement about any artists.

Avant rock, or dream pop etc is hit or miss for me. I mean, I love Mark Hollis’ last few LPs with Talk Talk, and frankly, My Bloody Valentine is what “post rock” sets out to be (tones and textures). Love me some Stereolab. Not sure Luna fits the bill, but they’re closer to Velvet Underground than the drone rock that draws inspiration from them. Air would fit this bill too, but for whatever reason they’re deemed ambient.

Agreed on the dream pop genre. Some is great, some is pretty awful, some I like for a month but then tire of forever. New Jay Som is really great so far.

I think that has something to do with all the lilting harmonies. Over-listen and you fee like you’re in the Twilight Zone.

Cybele’s Reverie is a great song, but I can see where it’d be an effective torture device.

That band is fantastic. Like Dandy Warhols, but better, IMO.

ETA: sorta like if Luna, the Velvet Underground and the Black Angels all got together to finish this sentence.
