The Return of the XFL Thread

Post by wlu_lax6 »

Starting a new thread for this league. Maybe it will get more posts than the AAF thread.
So the team names are now out.

Dallas Renegades
Houston Roughnecks (going oilers like logo.)
LA Wildcats
New York Guardians (Wasn't that a team name from Last Boy Scout or something)
St. Louis Battlehawks
Seattle Dragons
Tampa Bay Vipers
Washington DC Defenders

I read it as Tampa Bay Vapers at first. Wouldn't have been surprised.

Hopefully our new MLS team does better than Battlehawks. Although nothing will top Spirits of St. Louis from the old ABA (even though Lindbergh had some odious views).

Roughnecks (or Apollos) should be the name of the NFL team.

Some of the rule changes listed on the wiki

Fair catches will not be recognized, and the kicking team must give the returner five yards of space to recover and return the ball. (This rule is a carryover from the original XFL and is also in use in the CFL; breaching this space will result in a penalty, called no yards in the CFL.)New XFL Kickoff FormationThe league has an active interest in reviving the kickoffs as an element of the game. (This is in contrast to the AAF, which eliminated kickoffs outright, and the NFL and college football, both of which have imposed rules minimizing the impact of the kickoff.)[44]Kickoffs will be attempted with teams separated by only five yards, with the two teams not allowed to cross the neutral zone until the returning team touches the ball.

Points after touchdown

The extra point kick will be replaced with a scrimmage play, varying in point value depending on how far the touchdown-scoring team chooses to take the snap from the goal line: a two-yard attempt would score a single point, a five-yard attempt two points, and a ten-yard attempt three points.

I would like the NFL to adopt a rule like this.

Well, they didn't get creative with the name, but at least the logo is something brand new, and not a slightly modified version of some mid tier college.

I find it interesting that unlike other previous attempts to start an alternate league, they're almost-exclusively going into existing NFL cities and even using 3 NFL stadiums (St Louis is the only city without an NFL team right now).

It's not the usual suspects of Memphis, Birmingham, Orlando, San Antonio, and Shreveport.

I mean, they choose those other two (presumably) because they are the king of their respective jungles. Could make the same case with a dragon, I suppose.

I think today's naming convention, almost across the board, is that the name has to have some kind of local angle or people kind of lose their shit. Folks not from DC might not remember (or have a different perspective, mostly pointing and laughing) but the Washington Wizards? ... That did not go over well. And it wasn't some huge nostalgia for the Bullets, though there was a bit of that. It was a dumb name that allowed the owners wife the pretext to put in a bunch of purple seats in the arena because she like purple. Or some such bullshit.

(There was a fake poll, which actually included Seadogs as one of the potential choices, but it was all sham.)

I really don't recall that being a main topic of dissent/discussion, though I do vaguely remember it coming up a bit.

That line of argument didn't really hold a lot of water because Abe Pollin wanted to ditch the Bullet name due to the assassination of Rabin, and the fact that DC was the gun murder capital of the country for a time. He was also a well-known philanthropist, particularly in poorer parts of the city (Anacostia).

So, yeah, I kind of remember it coming up, but you'd have to have really been twisting yourself up a bit to make that your primary issue.

(Funny, given the PC discussion going on in the Comedy thread.)

In Nate Jackson’s book Slow Getting Up, he details getting recruited by the startup league of the moment. First they said he’d get paid “six figures”. Then it was 75, then 50, then when he was ready to sign, it went down to $35,000 per year.
