They really need to change the offside rule. Finnish goal being called back was ridiculous.
Also, Finland are fielding a guy named O'Shaugnessy. That's not right.

I no longer understand the offside rule, they don't allow this but they allow the Lukaku goal the other day, he was a yard behind the Russian defender, but because the defender misplayed the ball, it nullifies it?Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:11 am They really need to change the offside rule. I didn't see the Finland one, but according to Mark Clattenberg, the defender intending to play the ball kept Lukaku from being offside. Unless they recently changed it, my understanding was that of the defender intended to pass the ball and an offside player intercepted, that's a clean goal, but a miskick that goes to a player in an offside position should be whistled as offside. Same exact thing happened in my daughter's game last week. Other team passed to a player a good 5 yards offside, defender stretched to block the pass, got a piece of it, but it went to the player who scored, and the ref let it stand. I was sure he should have blown the whistle and missed it because he had no linesmen and wasn't in position to see the offide. I was convinced he was wrong (game ended in a 1-1 tie), but after the Lukaku goal, maybe he actually knew what he was doing? Or maybe he missed the call and got it right for the wrong reason?degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:52 amI no longer understand the offside rule, they don't allow this but they allow the Lukaku goal the other day, he was a yard behind the Russian defender, but because the defender misplayed the ball, it nullifies it?Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 8:11 am They really need to change the offside rule. There is also hindrance though. A player cannot shield, bother, or tackle from an offside position. The Sybian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 10:10 amI didn't see the Finland one, but according to Mark Clattenberg, the defender intending to play the ball kept Lukaku from being offside. So I think the ref was wrong in your daughter's game, and in the Lukaku game. The defender has to block the pass because there is someone there, who is offside. If the offside attacker wasn't there, the defender wouldn't have to block it. She could let it go and chase it after or let it go to the keeper.
You guys be the judge. And Syb, i need footage of your daughter's game.

That's a great point. The ball was going directly to the offside player if the defender didn't touch it, and it was a deliberate intent to pass it to the offside player. Even with a deliberate pass intercepted, I feel like it should be whistled, as the player gained advantage from being in an offside position. I think the rule used to be the defender had to have possession to nullify the offside call, but it's been more than 25 years since I called a game.degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 10:21 amThere is also hindrance though. To be clear, they got the call "right" in the Finland game. But it's the exact scenario that Wenger and others are proposing to change... If any part of the offensive player is onside, the goal should stand. As it is, if any part of the player is offside, the goal is disallowed. Way too many goals are wiped out for this reason and it stinks.

That's what happens when you bring in replay, it's black and white. Like a runner stealing second and not keeping his fingers or toes on the base or a skateblade was not touching the blueline. Then you have to have interpretation of black and white replay.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:06 am To be clear, they got the call "right" in the Finland game. It's dumb having the difference between offside or not be an arm extended.

This seems like something the upper leagues could easily solve with wearable technology. Just chip their shoes and go by front foot placement or something.

This tournament is doing a lot of work to roll back the handball rule. Just hope MLS is paying attention.

Pretty sure AB would’ve done better on that penalty than Bale.

No, I’m saying you’re better at penalties than Bale.
But a PK battle would be fun, so I’m in.

Does Wales just lack the depth to make their full sub allotment? Seems like in a congested tournament you might want some fresher legs.

This was the big game, they now have 4 points. They may rest players against Italy.

Also - Turkey is abysmal. Nice to see them get humiliated in front of their dictator.

Wales will rest players on yellow cards, as will Italy, so a draw suits both teams. The depth is good, but you simply can't replace Bale and/or Ramsey. I would probably say that Joe Rodon is getting that way too.degenerasian wrote: ↑Wed Jun 16, 2021 1:03 pmThis was the big game, they now have 4 points. They may rest players against Italy.
Wales should have won that game at least 4:0, as bad as Turkey were, you can only beat what is in front of you... Wales will likely finish 2nd in the group and get Finland or Russia in the last 16, which is a totally winnable match. Then you are onto the quarter finals, so anything could happen.

Love the Bale/Ramsey combination. Ramsey will always be one of my all-time favorite players, and my daughter's on him crush hasn't faded. Had no idea she was watching Euro highlights, but when I went to show her Ramsey's goal, she had already seen it and was very excited describing it.Tom 1860 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 12:16 pmWales will rest players on yellow cards, as will Italy, so a draw suits both teams. Summer's. Just went out of business this year. I bid on a bunch of stuff from the place via the restaurant auction. Did not win anything. Funny thing. Never watched soccer there. Only watched a fantastic rugby match (South Africa v someone).

Most memorable thing I watched there was the Olympic match between US and Chile in Australia. I think kickoff was 5:15a or something. Place was packed.wlu_lax6 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 4:15 pmSummer's. Just went out of business this year. I bid on a bunch of stuff from the place via the restaurant auction. Did not win anything.
