There was a stretch in the 80's when like 60% of all active athletes were named some variant of Dwayne.

I remember when Alfonseca came up the majors that some scout commented he should be twice as good as Mordecai Brown.

I wonder if the scout is still employed.

Funny, I was just reading about Brown the other day. His handicap really helped his breaking ball. I wonder if Alfonseca found his hand an advantage.

Lost in yesterday's news cycle was the agreement between Directv and SportsnetLA to carry Dodgers games in Socal, LV, and Hawaii. I'm no Dodger fan but it was frustrating having their games blacked out when there was no possible way to watch them. This will be a huge boon for local bars as most of them use Directv and there are lots of LAD fans in town.

TIL that the Mariners have had one home rainout in their history...and the game was in Fenway.

(I was also reminded that the Kingdome had to be shut down.)

I don’t know if this is true but I thought I saw Las Vegas has the minor league record for longest active streak without a rainout. I do know the last one here was 1983.

Does the MLB short 82 game summer season mean the death of pitchers hitting?

Yeah I am more pro pitchers hitting. I just think strategy is more interesting when you have to decide to let him go another inning or bring in a bat or do you let him struggle to finish an inning so you can get a bat in. Makes up for the 1 or 2 early at bats where a pitcher is swinging. Also MLB players were generally strong ball players growing up...they can take swings.

Why not just have there be an automatic out in the lineup in the 9 spot. That would be exciting too and speed the game up considerably.

Except my eyeballs tell me they aren't good at it.

Madison Bumgardeners career batting stats. He's considered a good hitting pitcher (mostly for power reasons I suppose).

When the Astros moved to the AL, I was one of those who really hated it due to the DH. Happy to report it took maybe three innings to figure out I was incorrect.

Bumgarner is considered "a really good hitting pitcher" and with that line he'd have to be the greatest defensive catcher ever to play in the majors. As far back as the 80s teams were punting on 9 spot hitting (Gooden was a better lefty hitter but they wanted to make sure his wrist/hand weren't exposed), so with 35 years of infinitely greater specialization, its well past time. And anyone who fights it is clearly anti-semetic.

If there are no differences between leagues, and teams cannot travel far, why even have leagues this year?

I would suggest 3 divisions of 10, West, Central and East.

Top 2 in each division get in plus 8 wild cards, have 6 one game playoffs , the semifinal winners join the other 6.
For this one year, maybe you can get a world series matchup that is normally not possible.

I've also heard some people say that most of the strategy of the pitcher hitting is out of the game because the majority of the moves are automatic. A widespread adoption of pulling starters prior to the third time through the lineup would make them even more so.
