2019-20 NBA Season

It's not quite NBA season yet, but this link is good enough to get this thread started.

It doesn't get discussed enough that Tim Duncan was a legitimately huge nerd and also a top-10 basketball player of all time. He would have fit right in with my group of nerdy high school friends and yet was also one of the greatest athletes of his generation. Truly incredible.

'99 was nearing the end of the era where online video games were exclusive to PC/laptops, too. Thanks for posting that link.

My video game nerd contribution (I have many) would be back in 1989 my old high school buddy and I would drive about 20 miles every other day down to the Palm Beach Mall in order to drop a roll of quarters down and play Arch Rivals: A Basketbrawl for about 3 hours straight. Then we'd probably go to a keg party later that night. We kept track of how many games we won/lost. And on the days we weren't driving down to the mall, we were probably playing MicroLeague II on my PC, or Baseball Stars on the NES. That triumvirate of video games occupied about 20% of my waking hours that summer.

For any of the even mildly Starcraft nerds out there...the lack of keyboard use is killing me (It's MUCH faster to build buildings and queue up units and select which units to move/attack with the keyboard in that game). Great blast from the past though.

Super looking forward to this season in general. And really looking forward to watching the young Grizzlies start to take strides. A 25 win season is so much more palatable when you have building blocks in place.

So am I. It seems like more teams have a meaningful title shot this year than in any year since maybe 2010-11. (The Warriors’ injuries opened the door for the Raptors and others last year, but they’d have beaten Toronto in 5 or 6 with a healthy roster.) It’s possible that everything clicks for the Clippers and they turn into a juggernaut but I think it’s more likely that at least 5 or 6 teams will have a legitimate title shot heading into the playoffs.

That's where I am at. That plus some frisky young teams who will be worth watching even if they have no chance at even a playoff run. The Dallas experiment. What the Hawks look like is season 2 of young future. Butler in Miami (which seems like a great fit for him). So many storylines aside from the premiere teams for a change. Whatever it is the Pelicans are gonna be - it's gonna be fun as fuck. All in on all of it.

I know mister d didn't want him, but if the Knicks signed Jimmy I think he becomes their most beloved player since Oakley.

I don't know if the country music loving try-hard best friend of Marky Mark and NY are necessarily a perfect match? (Especially one making $35MM per on what would be a bad team whether or not he's around.)

He and Tacko have really embraced being in Boston. Now I just have to convince myself they'll make up for the kiss of Horford.

They are both good but limited and not sure the combination is as good as horford to be honest.

I don’t think Tacko will play any meaningful minutes this year. Kanter is a good offensive player and rebounder but he is terrible defensively. It’s a big downgrade for the Celtics to go from Horford and Baynes to Kanter. Unless Tatum and Brown make the big leap that Ainge keep promising they’ll make, the Celtics could be a lot worse than expected.

I'd be surprised if they're a lot worse. They did take a big hit defensively with the loss of Horford, but this collection of players seems to be a good match for Stevens' coaching a team up (last year he struggled with the Kyrie, Rosier, Hayward return Dynamics). He still has to manage a hopefully much improved Hayward balanced with Brown playing for a contract and Tatum thinking he's a star, but I like the potential of the pieces around them.

Ill-advised but nice to see the support for the protestors (even if he renounces it.)

Wasn't sure what you guys were talking about in here.

Then I read up on it. Ooooh boy. The money dictates that even having a relatively tame opinion on Hong Kong means you're fucked.

Can't wait until Trump has an opinion on this.

The internet is telling me that South Park called it. I'll have to watch.

China is a huge market for the NBA and the Rockets have been the team with the closest connections ever since they drafted Yao. James Harden, who sells a ton of Adidas shoes in China and (like other NBA stars) has toured China multiple times, just issued a statement essentially apologizing for Morey’s Tweet. The fact that the Chinese government can essentially shut down all of the league’s business deals there gives it a tremendous amount of power.

Does this mean he supports Kaepernick fighting for social justice? And of course, Kevin Kruse with a wonderful reply.

Yeah, I realize it'd be an empty threat to say I'm done with the NBA if Morey loses his job over this, but I'd like to believe I would be.

There’s plenty to criticize about Nike labor practices in Asia. But Rubio doesn’t care about that and never has. He’s just doing the standard right-wing rhetorical trick of dismissing people who speak up about injustice “x” because they don’t also focus on injustice “y” — as if there’s something wrong with directing your focus onto one particular issue.

Yeah, a lot of the NBA's effort into making sure freedom of expression was protected for players (and coaches including Kerr, Pop, etc.) was undone in just one weekend. To wit:

Guess the NBA believes its players, coaches and GMs are allowed to have opinions as long as it doesn't jeopardize that sweet, sweet Chinese income stream.

You don’t get to be a billionaire NBA team owner without prioritizing profits over all else. And from the perspective of NBA owners, criticism of Trump and Erdogan is more acceptable because those guys don’t have the power to immediately shut down hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Good (if depressing) take from Drew Magary here

I'm not even an NBA fan, but I had allowed myself to believe that it might be a little different from the other major pro sports leagues, but nope. Just as corrupt and evil as the rest of them.

Justin Anderson is a stud of an athlete and a really good dude. It's amazing his self control in these situations.

Here he is declining to kill Justice Winslow in college.
