Strome makes more sense from us. He’s already at a “how is he scoring like this” level so in Pitt he’d go for 1.5 per game.

MAF moves up to sixth all-time in wins. Next up: Henrik Lundquist? (He’s 3 games back, might catch him before end of year.)

He’s 2+ years younger, too.

The Pacific Division standings as of midnight 12/31 are a thing of beauty.

Rangers call up Shesterkin and say there aren't any health issues with Lundqvist or Georgiev sooo ... that's weird.

They're at home this week, right? So nothing like this CF from the Pens over the weekend?

(PS - Crosby is travelling with the team this week)

Coming back from the west coast, but not playing back to backs or anything and they've proven willing to use cap space as an asset at the deadline, so it feels like something is up.

You thinking Lundqvist would waive his NMC? Hard to believe they'd move Georgiev.

If I had to guess, they want to see Shesterkin at the NHL level to confirm their belief he's the future and then they'll trade Georgiev. If this were the last year of Lundqvist's deal, maybe you go into next year with Georgiev and Shesterkin competing, but that extra year probably forces their hand given Shesterkin has already turned 24.

Yeah, guess that makes sense. Might as well sell high as long as someone is in place for 2021-22.

So tonight Tom Wilson becomes the youngest Caps player to reach 500 NHL games. He is 25 years old. I know it is an earned reputation but he is better than the goon/thug reputation he probably has in many cities. He has continued to improve each season.

He could have been over a month ago if he hadn't earned that reputation.

Nick Backstrom re-signs (sans agent) with the Caps. 5 years, $46M (11.3% of the current Salary Cap...same percentage as his previous contract).

Next up...Holtby....Caps still have some cap constraints and with an up and coming goalie behind him, I am skeptical of keeping Braden in DC. But Holtby has said he would consider hometown discount. Bobrovsky got $70M for 10 years from Florida.

Ovechkin’s 13-year, $124 million contract is set to expire in 2021 (Can sign a new deal 7/1/2020).

Wrong side of 30 being drastically outperformed by a highly-touted young goalie ... why would you give him another contract?

I don't know about drastically, but Samsanov is certainly rounding into form. My issue with him is that he's super young. Caps have history with young goalies that either get too comfortable or overwhelmed and don't hold up in the playoffs.

I wouldn't sign Holtby, but that shit is gonna hurt, big time from an emotional fan perspective.

I'd just like to put this out here ... if Kreider gets traded, we're not talking about it here for atleast 48 hours. If its to Boston, make that months instead of hours.

What should we we go with for the thread title?

"Whither Chris Kreider"

or

"Wither mister d's heart"

What if he catches one of the express flights down to TPA? I'm not hearing anything specific about the two, but the Bolts will have cap room (especially for a rental), and I'm hearing that forward depth is what they're seeking.

DeAngelo has played well but racistly and he's not direct from you, he was Arizona in the Stepan trade. Howden has slid nicely into the Jimmy Vesey "4th liner on a good team" role that some parts of our fanbase love to over-credit for things. Hajek, the supposed key piece, has looked pretty awful but has atleast done so youngly. On the flipside, McDonagh is still McDonagh and Miller is just a tick shy of a point per game so I'm really still loving that trade as much as the day it happened.

I could see Gallant going to Detroit.

Flames are coachless and should jump on Gallant or Laviolette but they're cheap.

I wonder if he walked to the upper left corner of the locker room, turned and then went back to his locker after this announcement.

So you fire your coach because he's not getting the potential out of your Cup-worthy roster...and you hire DeBoer? A guy who hasn't even won a division with some very talented teams. Must have been a helluva rift in that VGK locker room.
