Anyone check on that ref from the Pens game Wed night that took the header into the boards? Looked like he boggled himself pretty bad.

Probably though I’d rather he sat pretty soon since he’s played in all eight games.

Really ugly uniforms! (But they couldn’t keep James Neal for scoring again. On pace for 92 goals.)

Mikko Rantanen's injury is sad and horrible, but someone on twitter calling it "a nasty toe drag" is elite gallows humor.

So Holtby is the Cap #1 but Samsonov is playing really good hockey. The young goalie sent Copley back to Hershey. I don't think Braden is going to lose the #1 but going to hard for the caps to argue they need to pay his well earned top dollar for him when his deal is up after the season. It is a shame because Braden deserves to be a cap for as long as he wants, is great in the community, and a top goalie...but with the Caps salary cap situation it really does mean he is going to be in a new sweater next year.

Ovi's goal last night puts him 4 behind Luc Robitaille for all time NHL goals (12th overall)
and the assist on the goal moved Backstrom to 5th in assists all-time by a swedish-born player. 1564 games for 878 apples by Lidstrom. Backstrom has 649 in 906 games. Also ahead of Backstrom, Henrik Sedin (backstrom just went ahead of Daniel), Sundin, and Alfredsson.

Nikita Gusev has struggled to adjust to the smaller ice surface in the NHL and will be scratched from tonight's game so he can watch from the press box with a coach familiar with the international surface to try and talk him through the adjustments necessary.

Spin it however you want but seems like that could get accomplished in the film room. I really don't have a dog in the fight here -- the Knights got their picks already from this deal and Gusev from all accounts is a pretty good dude and I'd like to see him succeed, but think it underscores just how much a roll of the dice it can be bringing guys over from Europe later rather than sooner. Best time for most of these guys to adjust to the ice surface is probably in the AHL.

Yep.

Are the 2019-20 San Jose Sharks the 2018-19 Los Angeles Kings? I'll hang up and listen.

(If Brent Seabrook didn't exist, you could make an argument the worst long-term contract in the NHL right now could be Marc-Edouard Vlasic.)

Well, I keep coming up with hopeful hypotheticals, but this suckitude is a head-scratcher.

It's essentially the same team as last regular season, except Joe Pavelski and Justin Braun (Braun wasn't key, and Donskoi was injured or a healthy scratch much of the time.) So, the talent level isn't changed much, but they don't seem to be playing with any spark. Vlasic started slowly last season and came around later on. But, to point too much at him is wrong. The bigger issue is that all of the forwards except Evander Kane are underperforming. The goalies were already sub-standard, but now the Sharks aren't getting the offense to offset it. I am disturbed a bit by DeBoer's over-usage of key players, especially Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. Those two guys are leading the league in ATOI, and that will wear them out, eventually if not already. DeBoer seems to have no trust at all in his bottom two defensemen.

Wouldn't be surprised to see some shakeups soon, possibly including the head coach.

I too think they'll eventually be fine, but you can only dig yourself out of so big of a hole and at some point they're gonna have to get some at least B-minus goaltending to make a run.

Even if they weren't VGK's rival that's just a fascinating team to watch on and off the ice as the trade deadline approaches. They don't have a lot of draft pick equity, but I don't see any way they're going to avoid having to trade for a goalie. Depending on what happens, Holtby might be available though. That would likely be a HUGE upgrade.

As it is built right now, there's no other team in the NHL with such a short window of contention. We might be watching the window close in real-time like we did with the Kings last year and Chicago two years ago (hence the comparison). When they start really taking on water, it's gonna go down quick (no LAK pun intended).

*For the record, I really, really do truly believe that's still a couple years away once most of the D corps is on the very wrong side of 30 but if the GK situation isn't improved one way or another, it really could be happening as we watch. The forwards are solid and will be fine this year and next at least, but no team can overcome bad D and GK. Maybe one or the other, but not both.

EDM@PIT is a 2PM Saturday matinee this weekend. PIT@EDM is a 9PM Friday game. Neither appears to be set to be nationally broadcast. I'm probably a little Penguin-centric, but that seems like a missed opportunity or two.

Evander Kane gets his ass kicked in Las Vegas by everyone apparently.

(I’m legit shocked it got to this point. For obvious reasons, casinos don’t prefer to sue their customers. I also have some awesome stories from my buddy John who works at the Venetian now, but formerly the Mirage about the size of markers extended to such and such an athlete since he’s the guy who approves them (well, on his shift at least).

Hey, D!

I took a look at the game summary for the Rangers/Wings game and saw that Brendan Lemieux got an assist on a power play goal.

I paused a second and then it hit me. They are giving Lemieux time on the Power Play??

Anyone can score against the Wings, who are the league's worst on PK, giving up goals one-third of the time.

They've used Brendan Smith as a forward more often than not. The Rangers wing situation is pretty gross both by depth and by coaching decisions.

It might be a hybrid because it kind of looks like it, but it also looks narrower than the ice surfaces when I watch clips of KHL games.

I am actually very interested to see how all this turns out. Sportsnet has formally put out an apology. Ron Maclean has put out a formal apology.

Can Don Cherry really be back on the air come Saturday, without apologizing first, or at least apologizing within the segment itself? If he doesn't apologize, there is no way Rogers/Sportsnet can keep his segment running and him employed.

Don Cherry is really proof of Canadians' culture and inferiority complex. We need to hear how good Canadian boys are every Saturday night.
