Writing a novel

Anyone done it/tried it? I think I might have just had a million dollar idea for a novel (not literally $1000000) given the brutality of the industry but stay with me here) and National Novel Writing Month is November. I might go for this.

I’ve written some short stories and have a few things that are long but life usually gets in the way.

I think that's awesome. It's something I'd like to do (I have lots of half-formed ideas), but realistically, I'd probably have to wait until retirement. A couple of high school classmates have published novels that have done fairly well. But it's got to be very hard while you're also doing a regular job.

The girl who lived next door to me in the dorm my sophomore year writes YA books (non-Tittle division). If you want me to reach out on your behalf to connect you two for any questions (I also need to ask her about the appropriate age for kids to start reading her books on my daughter's behalf), let me know.

My muscular style alienates female readers. That's why I publish erotica under the pseudonym Melonia Delacroix.

I remember a well wtitten short story you shared around the time your mom was sick. Don’t remember many details but something about learning a guitar chord or song. Sound right?

Was there a short story on AofG back in the day? Or was that someone else and I assumed it was you because it was about drinking?

My first review!!!

God Bless.

If you guys want to order the book, that's great - but I don't know if they have any copies in stock.

I think this link for a free e-book works.

Maybe on Amazon but this Tara Ellis also gave it a strong 5 star for the ebook version. Also writing a 5 star review for a book you never read is non-trivial.

Also you can get the kindle version cheap (0.99). Which is not going to pay for coffee for Pruitt. But Amazon's must have some in stock because that is "Prime" for me.

I wrote a series for my student five years ago, with my students as the stars and me as the enemy, and was hoping it would jump start a writing habit for me. It didn't. Pruitt, you're welcome to use your connections to turn into a show.

I've turned the story idea into a series proposal and am still pitching it around.

I will say that writing TV scripts is so, so much easier than writing prose. It's like the difference between art and craft.

IMO of course. Maybe because I'm so used to pounded out scripts to a deadline - and to a rigid format. But As much as I love that book, I've yet to start the sequel (beyond a few pages of basic notes). It's labour intensive, and trying to get through the clutter to get public interest is very frustrating.

Still, one of my dreams when I was a kid was to see my name on the spine of a book cover.

Based on the number of streaming services that need content, I find it hard to believe you have not yet at least gotten a sniff (get it). Maybe too much Paw Patrol fatigue. Just look forward to my S.P.O.T.S lunch box and backpack

When I started pitching it, "Paw Patrol" was just hitting big time. Canadian companies didn't want to run a dog show - even though it's for an older audience.

I'm not giving up on it though. I love the dogs in "S.P.O.T.S."

The process of turning an idea into a series is insanely long - not untypical for a series to take 5 years or more to make it to the production stage. Maybe, these pups will pay for my retirement after all.

I wanted you to pitch my story, haha. Too many characters (so I could include every student), inside jokes only the students in the story would get, and jokes ripped off from other shows -- you'd have a hit.

So I obviously never went for this but I have two good ideas and I think I’m going to work on them both over the summer and go back to work in October-ish. I feel like this might be my one shot to really go for it.

One is a ripoff (I’m being a little harsh but also?) of Michael Connolly.

One is a ripoff (I’m being a little harsh but also?) of Elmore Leonard.

I prefer the Elmore Leonard one.

That one is the newest one and might fit my personality better. But we’ll see. I like the idea of starting two and then letting my eagerness to get back to which one to decide how to proceed. Starting just one sounds like a excuse to suck.

Here’s a sample.

My poor American brain might never get used to seeing sports talk shows on TV where the female participants are not really wearing what would be considered “clothes” and no one really questions it. It makes that 2-6 pm block of time so much weirder in a Mexican sports bar compared to America. In the US it’s like Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon on the TV. Here it’s softcore porn.
