That might explain why The Athletic was down for an hour or so earlier today.

Starting Lineup figurines collector group. Lots of us are in the sweet spot, age-wise, for this.

My two Alan Trammell's (home, road) say hi from wherever I put them when we moved.

The only remaining Starting LIneup figurine I have is Mike Greenwell.

I'm definitely in the sweet spot, age wise, but despite collecting cards (mostly baseball, but some of the other 3 major sports), I don't think I ever had a starting lineup figurine. I doubt there was ever a Buccaneer figurine, and I didn't really have a favorite baseball team, but watched a shitload of Cubs, Mets, Braves on their superstations.

I have Jordan, Bird, Thomas, and Magic in the office. Some baseball players too I can't remember because I haven't been in my office in 4 months.

He's pretty extraordinary, considering he's almost entirely self taught. I know Jonathan Wilson was a huge influence on him. Sometimes his writing isn't very clear, but the information he provides is very good.

ETA: It would be great if they could use GIFs to explain his points, but I understand they can't use GIFs for copyright reasons.

Agreed, but my eyes glaze over so fast. The knowledge is there, it's just tough to convey via that medium.

I actually really liked that article. Of course, as a Chelsea fan, I'm doubly interested in Pulisic though.

So I guess its possible they forecasted infinite linear growth and when that wasn't met, this became "necessity", but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if this was in part a convenient time to cull a bit.
I went looking, and still haven't found someone that I read that was cut, (notwithstanding the Quarashi news). That's vastly different to the gutting of Banner Society. I'm so fucking pissed about that.
The Fullcast is back, baby!

I figure they earned the twelve bucks by breaking the "Dell Loy Hansen is a racist asshole" story.

Though if it ends with someone buying and moving the team, that'd be a real drag.

Interesting articles in the last few days from the Athletic on political donations by soccer owners. The first on the MLS was a bit more interesting than the European team owners because it really showed that the actions the MLS teams are taking don't line up with the $ being donated. On the other hand the article hits it on the head....they are one issue donators...and that is about $ in their business/pockets.

I actually went to a game at Dodd Stadium in Norwich about 10-12 years ago when they were still the Connecticut Tigers and thought it was a great time. There were only a few hundred people there, though.

This story on Jim Leyland is fantastic:

https://theathletic.com/2217382/2020/11 ... s-pirates/
Gary Varsho watched from the bench one night in June 1992 as the Montreal Expos rolled up a 9-0 lead on the Pirates. In the ninth inning, after Steve Buechele drew a one-out walk, Leyland sent Varsho into the game as a pinch runner.

“So I go out there, and it’s (three) pitches, inning over,” Varsho said. “I come back into the dugout and ask if he wants me to stay in the game. Jim goes, ‘Fuck, no.’ I sit down, but I didn’t get it.”

The next day, Varsho was still peeved. Leyland walked up to him during batting practice.

“Jim goes, ‘You’ve got (contract) incentives, don’t you? Games (played) incentives?’ I did, but I still didn’t understand what he was getting at,” Varsho said. “He goes, ‘Well, you’re going to make $20,000 with that appearance. Now, your next incentive is probably a ways away and if I keep doing this shit, my ass will be fired.

“‘But, last night, I figured you’d fucking earned it.’”

This story on Steve Nash and his long love of playing pickup soccer in NYC is pretty awesome:

https://theathletic.com/2231599/?source=igbio
Once, in the summer of 2014, a 30-something New York native named Joe Franquinha showed up at a park in Manhattan to be a guest goalkeeper for a squad from an ad agency. As he warmed up, Franquinha noticed an athletic looking guy wearing green shorts, green shoes and a white jersey repping Miss Lily’s, a Jamaican restaurant in lower Manhattan: “Is that fucking Steve Nash over there?” Franquinha asked.

It was. According to Franquinha, Nash balled out.

A few years before that, Kyle Martino, a retired MLS player living in New York, was coaxed by a friend into joining a team from Phebe’s, a bar in the East Village. The squad was known for its ringers, so Martino wasn’t surprised to see some former pros warming up. He was, however, shocked by what he saw on the field at Pier 40.

“I looked over and I was like, ‘Is that fucking Steve Nash?’” Martino recalled. “(My friend) was like, ‘Yeah, man, he plays on our team, too.’”

There's a lot of surprises in that article, but Mike Brown's reaction was one of the biggest.

I wish I could unsee that photo, though.
