My sister who lives in Colorado Springs and is an ICU nurse has got it. They didn't test her, but the hospital sent her home and she's self-isolating. Doesn't have the fever (yet) but has a sore throat and a bad cough.

As usual, Trump has a gift for being inarticulate but this is pretty rapidly becoming the corporatist consensus. The “liberal” New York Times has run multiple recent editorials suggesting as much, including from Thomas Friedman. Here’s another powerful “Democrat” saying the same thing:

It’s becoming clear that there’s a conflict between preserving American capitalism as is and serving the public health goals of the entire population. And we know which side of that divide many leaders will fall on.

Also, note that the pivot to “the cure is worse than the disease” happened almost immediately after McConnell’s “relief” bill, which was mostly just thinly-disguised corporate giveaways without any worker protections, was voted down in the Senate.

I really don't get why they are testing not just every player in the NBA and NHL, but the entire back office staff. WTF? Does it matter if they are positive as opposed to anyone else? I heard a sports anchor mention yesterday it's because they travel so much, but the league is on hold, so they aren't fucking traveling. It's insane.

Trump should be happy to know that in NJ, doctors are telling symptomatic patients who are not in need of hospital care NOT to get tested, just assume you have the virus and call to check in once a day. Trump will keep his precious numbers low and and be able to brag about how amazing his response was. My guess is that a huge percentage of the population already contracted the virus and either hasn't gotten symptoms yet, or will get symptoms so mild, they will never realize it. I'd be curious once this is over, to see mass testing of people for antibodies to determine how many actually contracted the virus.

I'm hearing from so many friends and family that they either have colds or allergy issues going on, me included. We've all read the charts and concluded we don't have COVID, because he have sinus headaches, congested noses, sniffles... Last night I saw an interview with a surgeon who tested positive and is close to ending his 14 days. He said it started with a sinus headache, turned to sniffles and a slight itchy, sore throat with some chest tightness. He said a very slight fever kicked in, but only at night. Well fuck, other than the slight fever, sounds like the seasonal allergies I get every year at this time.

Yeah but... It's so easy to say it's not. Economic strain is not worse than physical health except to the rich. If you have little or nothing then your health way outweighs loss of nothing.

Also you can't parrot liberal talking points. You have to read and understand the bill but few actually do that work. Do let us know though. Not sure I've seen a detailed summary of even the legislation that has been passed so how can you have an opinion on legislation that is changing right now?

The bill absolutely included a $500B slush fund that could be distributed by the Treasury without oversight and without disclosing where it was sent for six months. That's a non-fucking starter right there.

Exactly. And Trump expressly declined to say whether his own companies would be eligible for that slush fund money.

I'm not being obsessive about it, but I have the Hopkins page with the running tabulations...

We are now only 18k below Italy of confirmed positives. That's incredible, given how we are approaching testing in this country. (59k --> 41K)

There is a legitimate question of whether it's better to get it early or late. I'm banking on lasting 45-60 days and that treatments, supplies etc will offer a better chance at recovery. But it's most likely true that those who have gotten it and in way to recovery will have better odds than those who get in in the next 30 days. So not crazy. Even tonguing down the next covid case this afternoon isn't really a bad move. Y'all are crying but they're taking rational steps.

They were basically talking about sacrificing a million lives (or more) to save the stock market. But it’s too late if you think it’s a good idea to contract it now. Most hospitals are already at capacity and by the time it takes for you to get there you’ll be getting your oxygen and lung treatments in a hallway of you’re lucky. You’ll be sent home to fend for yourself if not.

Yeah 'contracting it now' means not even getting symptoms in 7-14 days. Doing the math, that's probably not going to be an optimal time to be seeking healthcare. (Unless you want to be confined to a pop-up tent in a parking lot.)

It's hard to tell if it's just because it's the prism by which everything gets separated these days or just a massive coincidence, but it seems like this virus was specifically designed to draw fault lines on almost all the same places that the electorate current resides (science vs. faith, rich vs. poor, old against young, etc.)

Wouldn't empty strip malls, stadiums, arenas, and convention centers be excellent places for the National Guard to post up in right about now to start with screenings?

Have we not hit some special point yet? We can be proactive right now about something like this. I just don't get it.

Also, Kirtland finally has its first 3 confirmed cases. 2 military members and a spouse. Due to out of state travel. Not sure if the sick left the state or a friend came to the state. If they left the state that's a huge violation of the current local area travel guidelines.

Just heard that on a call with some ABQ people. Had 3 or 4 coworkers on base about 10 days ago, hopefully they didn't overlap.

Union Co. (NJ) opened one up on the campus of Kean today. By appt and with rx only.

That necessitated two red alert phone calls from our mayor yesterday. The first to let everyone know it was opening. The next a couple of hours later to reiterate that it was by appt and rx only, and to promise that all traffic will be coming from the main road leading to the school, that any and all traffic backups will be contained on campus, and that no potentially sick motorists will be redirected through nearby neighborhoods.

Fedex Field is being used. Insert Funny Joke about people actually wanting to go to that stadium for an event.

Arlington Co also is using a big lot they own for drive in appointments if your doc refers you.

Ontario ordering all non-essential businesses to close (unless staff is working from home).

Essential businesses include grocery stores, drug stores, liquor and beer stores. And obviously the government's weed delivery is still running.
