Where are all the Republican Congressmen and pundit freaking out that Trump is allowing this virus into the country as a means of destroying the US? Oh, I guess that is just when we get one death from a virus under Obama.

If we’re gonna engineer a superbug, think we could put some criteria on it? Like a vector of infection would be having an instagram following of 6 digits or more?

Don't we go through this shit every couple of years? Bird Flu. N1N1. SARS.

From what I've learned as long as we keep Gwyneth Paltrow from inadvertently eating pig shit in Hong Kong we'll be fine.

Yeah, but have you seen the stuff she's doing lately? I think that's a real risk.

This pandemic apparently started with a dude who was buying recently slaughtered hedgehog and/or crocodile in an illegal “wet” market in China so you’ll never stop this shit until you stop people from wanting to eat fucking hedgehogs.

Though to be fair the way things are going this would be an on the nose way for 10 percent of the worlds population to die.

For the record, this still seems...bad. Maybe even alarming.

Also, Quinn is due to be in France for a two-week immersion stay starting March 15 - first few days in Paris and then 10 days in Lyon with a family and then back to Paris. Hard not to feel some extra anxiety about that, frankly.

I just cancelled a trip to the Amalfi Coast that I had scheduled for May after the confirmed cases in Northern Italy jumped from 3 to over 140 in only 48 hours this past weekend.

Yeah, I have a trip to China scheduled for November which is very obviously up in the air at this point, though it's a long way until then.

You'd think Trump would be all over this since a pandemic that kills 5 percent of people over 70 years old would definitely put a dent in his support come November.

So far Americans are not in danger? They got Americans quickly out of Wuhan and the Diamond Princess back to the US and they are in quarantine. Has there been a positive case that happened in the US? I think they have handled this well for a country of its size. Meanwhile, it's spreading all over Germany, Italy and France.

tennbengal: Is Quinn's school considering cancelling the exchange? I would not send her.

Am I being stupid and naive for not even considering Corona Virus if I was travelling? I wouldn't go to China right now, but Italy and France, I wouldn't have given a second thought. I was talking to a coworker in my NJ office, and she was horrified when I said I was going into New York this week. She looked at me like I'm nuts, and said I was crazy for getting onto a train, in a confined space, with Corona going around. Or for going into New York, because so many people travel to NYC from all over the world. Never even crossed my mind.

Yeah, it's pretty well-contained in the US, but it's starting to look like there's a lot of asymptomatic cases so sooner or later it will start to spread here as likely it will everywhere. It's probably just a question of how long it takes and what extreme measures are used to try and stop its spread. Could see the NBA and NHL playoffs be affected here. Imagine if they tried to enforce a quarantine around the Bay Area -- well, or some city that's actually going to make the playoffs -- and the team can't travel out and the other team can't travel in, etc., etc.

Depends on the region too. I have a friend who is going to Rome next week where there are no cases, so hes still going.

However a co worker was scheduled to go to Milan in April, where the outbreak is, and he has cancelled.

We are heavily considering a late honeymoon to France in May/June. This wasn’t even really on my radar. These things always seem so flash in the pan and not all that dangerous to normal healthy population. Is this that much different?

Still too soon to tell but current mortality rates are around 2 percent in countries with very good medical care for the most part. If it becomes a real pandemic could easily kill 100 million people, mostly in Africa and rural Asia.

If people in countries other than China start dying in real numbers then the serious hysteria starts to set in. We haven’t seen anything yet.

To me it's not really the catching the virus part that concerning but more it's all the circumstances and logistics around it.

1. Are you really going to have fun on a trip where you are worrying about the area that you're in, what's open/closed, who's around you, who's coughing, can you leave the hotel?
2. What if the situation gets more serious when you're there and flights get cancelled and you have to find a different way home. And then when landing back in the US, be put on a list to be quarantined.

There are already a bunch of different labs working on creating a vaccine. While I agree that it's likely to keep spreading, I think we'll be able to stop it before it gets to anything like Spanish Flu numbers (or the 100 million Brian put out there). Plus, that one killed at something like a 10% rate, although they didn't have our test accuracy, so it's possible that a lot more people had it than we realized, so the mortality rate may have been much lower.

But then, viruses are tricky and maybe it's harder than I think.

I think all the cases in the states are people, by design, quarantined on military bases.

Guys, the vaccine is "close". No worries! And shit, it almost doesn't matter since it's just another month until April when "a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat" and "in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away".

You guys are just drinking the Liberal kool aid.

A Presidential Medal of Freedom winner speaks...

Rush Limbaugh on coronavirus: ‘The common cold’ that’s being ‘weaponized’ against Trump

Can't make this shit up.
“I’m telling you, the Chicoms are trying to weaponize this thing,” Limbaugh said, using a slang term to refer to Chinese Communists. He later added, “Well, every nation is working on things like this, and the Chicoms obviously in their lab are doing something here with the coronavirus — and it got out.”

But then Limbaugh suggested the virus was being “weaponized” another way: by the media to target Trump.

Limbaugh, a staunch ally of the president, claimed media coverage was scaring investors and people in business to cash out of the stock market as part of a larger effort to suggest “Trump and capitalism are destroying America and destroying the world.”

We have a big event in Nashville next week that most of the company attends. Late last week, they decided to exclude all North American employees from traveling to it. It's interesting when you think of all the various ways that fear of this thing (justified or not) are going to slow the global economy.
