I like to think those two people were walking together but practicing distancing and are disgusted by Jackass Giff's behavior.

99 percent of everyone is moving up onto the yard or into the street when passing. I mentioned elsewhere, on nice days, the streets are pretty busy. But almost everyone is respecting the 6 foot distance thing.

My wife might go to a literal tailgate party this evening, where her friends are going to a parking lot, back their cars into a circle and just check-in and sip some wine from a distance. This is killing a lot of them who go for walks and have some wine 3-4 times a week. My wife isn't really that bothered by it, because she actually enjoys spending time with me. (not really joking - this is gonna be a really tough thing for some of these couples to get through.)
My wife and I spend 95% of our non-work life together I'd estimate. Most of our social engagements are with other couples. She does a Girls Night out thing with a few friends fairly regularly, and my time is probably golf/movies with a kid. But yes, I do know some people that aren't doing as well with the togetherness.
Yeah, the joke going around my family law circles is the upcoming spike in business. It ought to predate the upcoming spike in OB/GYN business, I'd assume.
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.

It's honestly not been as bad here as I figured. I didn't think it would be a huge issue, but we both value our "alone time" since we work mostly different shifts and different days. I'm spending a little more time than I would in my office, which I generally try to avoid during non-work hours, but it's been fine. Big test will be if her shoulder surgery goes ahead in two weeks and I have to take care of her all week. If we get through that week, it'll be all gravy from there.

It's been ok for me, as my wife and I are both still working so we're at times out of the house.
Normally, she's stuck to me if we're at home anyways so this is no different. I've nicknamed her Crazy Glue.

Have the hospitals there shut down elective procedures? NJ went that route 2 weeks ago, defining elective as anything that isn't necessary to live.

Not yet and we're kind of surprised. But she had her pre-surgery consult yesterday and apparently the doctor is gung-ho about continuing ahead. The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday 4/7 though and I'm thinking by then something like that could be in place here.

(Note: It's in an out-patient surgical center, not a hospital, so the facility isn't an issue. But if there's an executive order because of the availability of masks and whatnot, that could definitely get it postponed.)

My understanding in NJ is that outpatient places were closed and their supplies given to hospitals. NJ is just under 2,500 reported cases, so the actual infection number must be enormous. Between people who haven't gotten symptoms yet, and others who are presumed positive but told not to get tested due to a lack of tests. My county has 432 cases reported, 147 today alone! My town has 16 reported cases. On the plus side, my town has no deaths, no hospitalizations and 2 listed as "fully recovered."

The city where my wife works for the health department will go over 100 total cases this weekend, if not by tomorrow.

She’s due back at work Monday, but they finally went full WFH this week. She may just need to go in to get a phone or have her laptop configured. The non-medical personnel in the office have mainly been making calls and doing interviews trying to trace the path of the sick so they can try to help prevent (or predict) further infections. They’re just about to the point where the number of cases is overwhelming, and very much doubt the county or state will be able to help out.

I'm actually baffled by Vegas' numbers. Only thing I can think, and this is of course no offense, is that it's such a specifically tourist for pleasure town, that folks started bailing on trips right away?

Still, pretty bizarre. (And, selfishly, good for an online chum.)

Not really. When you get into the eastern shore, Calvert and Charles... Those are the eastern portions by the water, there are lots of sections that are mostly horse farms or chicken ranches. Then, if you go Western MD, up by WVA and PA... SUPER spread out.

Yeah, it's a little perplexing to be honest. They definitely closed things down just in time here to get most of the tourists who might have been infected shuffled off back home. The unemployment numbers here are going to be insane though since you're talking about an industry that makes up like 20 percent of the workforce.

Has anyone read a good explanation for why the reported death rate varies so much by country? I'm looking at the Johns Hopkins dataset, and among the five countries with the most cases, the current death rate (deaths/confirmed cases) is as follows:

USA - 1.5%
China - 4.0%
Italy - 10.2%
Spain - 7.5%
Germany - 0.6%

I know there's probably a lot of variance among countries with respect to accuracy of reporting, testing rates and demographics. But if the US is significantly under-testing, which we all think is true, than our actual death rate would me a lot lower than 1.5% and perhaps closer to Germany's. So what explains the huge disparity between USA/Germany and Italy/Spain?

I’d say there is a lag between reported cases and deaths for sure. Italy’s habit of multigenerational homes makes their number abnormally high I imagine.

My guess is there is some sort of genetic predisposition for getting worse symptoms. I've read that Type A blood gets it worse, and O doesn't get it as bad. The first fatalities in NJ were an Italian-American family. Older mother and 3 or 4 kids all died very quickly. My wife is convinced Italians have a genetic marker that makes it worse. Who the fuck knows.

Meanwhile, I hear a plane flying into/out of Newark... Who the fuck would get on a plane in NJ right now?

Also, I think it's too early for the US fatality rate to mean much. A lot of currently confirmed cases are going to die.

And my wife just got a text. A HS friend's parents are both in the hospital with COVID. Father has pneumonia, both have bad prognosis. I know the father is an EMT. Not sure if he still does full work, but he trains EMTS and CPR classes.

This is the scary thought. Because if it’s not genetic and Italy is a harbinger for what’s to come here then that’s bad news.

I also think our fatality rates will look worse, because we aren't testing so many people that have the virus. Maybe it's just NJ, but people that do telehealth visits and Drs are confident they probably have COVID are told not to take the test, assume they have it, and stay home.

I'm actually baffled by Vegas' numbers. Only thing I can think, and this is of course no offense, is that it's such a specifically tourist for pleasure town, that folks started bailing on trips right away?

Still, pretty bizarre. (And, selfishly, good for an online chum.)
Yeah, it's a little perplexing to be honest. They definitely closed things down just in time here to get most of the tourists who might have been infected shuffled off back home. The unemployment numbers here are going to be insane though since you're talking about an industry that makes up like 20 percent of the workforce.
Complete pseudo science, but could it be the warmer weather like people are talking about?
Well that's a fair question, because I've seen speculation that's possible, but it's been an unseasonably cold spring here. I'd have to imagine WAY, WAY cooler than Florida and Louisiana who are getting rocked more or less.
