How is your WFH setup?

Post by wlu_lax6 »

So figured since we were WFH, we should share

I am in the basement office. Supposed to be "our office" but it really is my space. Door closed, good background of bookshelf, neon dog light, some Charles Bragg art(google Mr. Tripod for an example), and lots of hats as my background for zoom meetings.

Have an old metal school desk that was my moms. Put a Varidesk ontop of it. Have the work laptop and mouse on the top shelf. Have the monitor, personal laptop up on that level. The keyboard and mouse for the personal setup on the lower level of the Varidesk. Feels like I am the keyboard player in an 80s band all day.

Window on the wall I am facing looking into the side yard. Basically I see a bit of a bush, some grass, my fence and the top of the neighbors house (which is supposed to get knocked down for replacement any day).

Have a great high back office chair that was purchased for a few bucks when my startup went out of business (office max not Herman Miller). Although right now I am going standing with with Varidesk in up position and amazon basic anti fatigue mat under my feet.

Wife is upstairs in the bedroom. She has her laptop and spare monitor on a card table that is on bed raisers to get the height right. Kids are all over the rest of the house.

I gained an appreciation for how durable iMacs can be.

To explain AB's comment, I reported to my home office last week and found it like this:

I heard a loud crash in my house around 1 a.m. one morning, but all I could was my cat who was very scared about something. I suspect she got tangled up in the cables dangling off the desk, got scared and then bolted and pulled everything to the floor. I rotated the desk to face the wall so she wouldn't be able to duplicate that feat.

If you are required to work from home, be sure to ask your boss if you can therefore expense your home WiFi/internet expense. (I worked from home for five years and they picked it up.)

If working from home requires an upgrade, or additional marginal costs, okay. Otherwise, if any of my employees asked me to pay for home WiFi that they already had, knowing the kind of difficulty we as a firm are going through because of the economic chaos, I would simply tell them to stop working from home. And stop expecting a check.

I'm mostly with steve on this one. This hopefully will be temporary and the benefits of working from home (no commute, etc.) should be enough upside to not start picking nits.

Giving my (small) staff $200 each, to cover/go towards their cell and internet bills for this month. Going remote as of CoB today. My new firm is nearly paperless (and that conversion will likely increase due to COVID). The new physical location is a smallish office, and my dad and I still plan to mostly come in and work in our separate spaces. That being said, I can work from my laptop and cellphone (thank god for voip!).

If any of you business owners/partners are interested, my company is producing a webinar tomorrow to help small and medium sized companies cope with COVID related issues. No idea about the specifics of the content, but it should be open for non-clients if anyone is interested.

I've got the basement office as well. It's my main music listening area so have stereo and speakers in there. Have been working my way through some vinyl that I haven't listened to for years and watching some UK panel shows (8 out of 10 Cats currently) in between albums.

I've still had to go into work 2 of the 4 days we've WFH as there are some fucking Luddites that accessing a computer remotely is like splitting the atom.

On Wednesday I will figure out my WFH setup.

Yesterday I ordered one of those headset/mic things for doing all the Zoom meetings that are going to happen over the next few weeks/months. I joked that if I add the short sleeve dress shirt, a skinny tie, a buzz-cut, and a 3 pack a day smoking habit I'll look like someone from Mission Control during an Apollo mission.

By the way, your story about Michael Irvin/DeAndre Hopkins/Bill O'Brien is nuts. O'Brien is a piece of shit if he compared Hopkins to Aaron Hernandez.
