I'm going to open a whisky bar that also sells milk.

Same with me...already working from home + no kids has meant this whole thing hasn't been that big of deal. Only difference has been trying to figure out what to do on weekends and timing trips to the grocery store.

The real retail problem has been Lowe's/Home Depot. They are an absolute shitshow on the weekends. More than once my neighbors have walked and either walked out or abandoned a cart full of stuff.
I would like expensive whiskey.

Yeah, VERY early on we were still fixing up the house prior to putting it on the market (not happening now) and I had to run to HD...

Just... Yuck. People there were in such a panic and just running around willy nilly.

Yep. We're so full of stupid here.

This was my favorite breakfast place. Started hearing rumblings the day before that she was going to open up, because FREEDOM. The owner apparently didn't tell her employees, so they showed up expecting to be handling takeout and instead got this. The lady in teal lives a baseball throw away from us, her daughter has been in the same class as my youngest. It's been 'fun' to see her stupid ass plastered all over the national news. I'd like to believe she'd be ashamed, but if she was, she wouldn't have gone in the first place.

And our next door neighbors had friends over yesterday, for at least the 4th weekend in a row. So much stupidity around.
Update: They were open again today, until 2:30 when they normally close. But their business license has been indefinitely suspended by the state. The owner has apparently posted on Facebook that she's going to reopen tomorrow anyway.

This (follow the link) is a very good and practical piece summarizing what we know about transmission. Some of it will end up wrong, or maybe not as significant as it seems here. But we have to make decisions in real time, and I think this is a pretty good guide for that.

One thing this report stresses that I think is underreported: talking may not present as big a risk as sneezing, but there is a risk nonetheless. I don't think people realize that there is a danger in just having face to face conversations, especially if they are long or loud enough. I don't think that has been communicated very well, if at all. Blessed are the antisocial.

Oh and for God's sake, DO NOT CURL.

Like that one too but why is it that one virus particle is insufficient to infect? And the author states that airflow is a big factor. If he's right then anything outdoor and windy would seem to be ok. Beaches in particular.

I emailed my friend in Taiwan, who is a teacher, asking how things were and he replied to me with this. For you guys with kids, do you think it would work here or are drama queen moms like the one Syb knows going to be a huge problem?
Due to how well Taiwan's been able to handle the spread of the virus, my school has been open for most of this semester. We were closed for most of February, and again for a week at the end of March, but we've been open and running through all of April and May. Here's what we've put in place:

- Students & teachers only allowed to enter through main doors. People are stationed at the door all day with thermometers, anyone with a temperature of 37.5+ is sent to the nurse and then sent home.

- Everyone has to wear a mask all day, unless eating. Yes, even for PE.

- No gatherings of more than 100. so no large assemblies, no awards shows, the musical is being filmed without an audience (yes, they are wearing masks while rehearsing and on-stage)

- Extra seating areas for lunch, students required to keep one seat between each other when eating.

-Hand-wash & sanitizer stations everywhere. Lower school students have designated "hand-wash moments" throughout the day.

-Parents are only allowed on campus with an appointment, and are escorted by staff to and from appointments.

-Parents & staff must report any travel to the school.

-Anyone who travels, or lives in a home with someone who travels cannot attend school for 3 weeks.

These measures allow us to operate without needing to keep the students at arms-length from each other constantly. We don't need to observe social distancing in classrooms, only when students are actively eating and therefore have their masks off.

So the local newsstation filmed my poker clubs reopening...We had one table running so I was the only one actually dealing. Depending on what footage they use I might be about to become the poster boy for gambling in the pandemic. This could be fun

In Nevada's re-opening plan, it would require 4-handed tables for live poker, so the likely plan is for live poker to remain closed for the immediate future.

Yes! I don't get the need for gloves at work. Anything you get on your hands will get on a glove. If you are going to a store for 10 minutes and are careful not to touch your face, then take the gloves off immediately and properly, yes, gloves work. But wearing one pair of gloves all day is pointless.

Yeah, I was just explaining to degen and whoever else interested that (unfortunately) live poker might be down for awhile unless it's done with a different table somehow. They might ultimately get approval for six-handed but it would have to be one of the full size tables that seldom get used these days as most casinos have tried to fit as many tables in the poker room as possible and keep the floor space for the poker room as small as possible.

I've played electronic hold'em on a cruise, but that was pretty dumb. However, that might be the short-term solution for some casinos.

There are two things I've been annoyed by from very very early on in this whole thing as it relates to guidance.

1) Gloves. Covered this ground, but the bottom line is that if you touch something that has a bunch of virus on it with gloves, and then touch your face, you might still get it. Maybe the premise is that with gloves on you aren't as likely to rub your eyes. But IMO if you aren't explicitly telling the public this, they are going to miss the point.

2) Masks. I've ranted about this before, but for at least a month after this thing showed up in the US, official CDC guidance was that it wasn't necessary to wear a mask, under the guise/premise that unless it was an N95, you could potentially still contract the disease because the particles were so fine. Which, I don't fully buy and think that was spin from the Trump controlled CDC. But, the idea of containing and/or mitigating how far particles would go with/without a mask seemed common sense to me.

I'm so adamant about this one, because I'm part of a team at work that was talking about how to communicate to the public and to employees and I really pushed back on our emergency management guy on this point. He kept pointing to the CDC until I finally told him, offline, some of the stuff I knew about behind the scenes at the CDC and that there was some serious bullshit going on with the guidance.

We had our folks in some kind of mask by early April, before the CDC changed its tune, but not early enough IMO.

=-=-=-==

And just to underscore how much (I believe) the CDC guidance was skewed by Trump and his cronies, just look how long it took for the WH to get around to wearing masks. Trump doesn't like the appearance, it's bad for optics. He felt that way about the entire country, so of course there needed to be an outbreak at the WH and with Secret Service for those folks to say "fuck this, and fuck you, I'm putting on a mask."

Like, if you are the kind of person that picks your nose and then walks around touching shit... That option is now not available to you with a mask on. I mean, maybe in terms of fecal matter? Or if you are coming from home with a bunch of the virus floating around and getting on your hands.

Yeah, that does make sense. So, there again though, you'd need to be communicating with the public on that. Because there were a ton of stories early on where ppl were just chucking gloves on the ground immediately after leaving the stores. They weren't seeing it that way.

I've also heard the argument that Americans (THE WEST) find masks inhumane, they want that interaction and facial expression. When one goes to Starbucks, they want to see the barista smile back, and vice versa. In Asia everyone wears masks anyways, due to pollution and girls avoiding the sun, so they're used to being expressionless robots.

Yeah, that logic, but ... if you don't wash after you wipe your ass I assume you aren't throwing gloves on at the store.

I like disposable gloves to deal with dirty places where you can wash immediately afterwards. Like a grocery. Just trash or litter and clean hands again. Not so big on masks either. I do sometimes out of respect for others not knowing I am careful but I just don't believe my daughter's homemade mask is doing but so much.

The key with the mask is that if YOU are asymptomatic, if you cough or sneeze or shout (and expel a bunch of virus), it doesn't shoot out 20 or more feet and get someone else sick. It pretty much stops at the source. For the most part.

You are absolutely correct that a lot of the homemade masks aren't going to do jack shit if you are in a room where someone with the virus is sitting around breathing for awhile. You're gonna get sick, most likely. (That thing linked in here today does a good job explaining that stuff.)

Were those articles written by the Phillip Morris scientists who concluded that smoking had no link to cancer and was beneficial to health?

I heard that too. Don't think you can just ignore those sort of things. Not a reason to take up smoking but I believe it. I also use mouthwash a lot and stay out of bathrooms because farts and flushing and lack of circulation.

We know the virus is far more deadly for people with lung conditions and we also know chronic smokers have the strongest lungs so that makes sense TT.
