Yeah, I've been walking like a demon - I go over my 10,000 steps every day - and almost everybody I pass has a smile and a hello. Nice.

And, Costco opens at 8 tomorrow for over 60 old folks like me, so for now anyhoo, I'm making it.

But, if they tell us we can't go outside to exercise anymore, I'm going to lose it.

No reason to keep suburbanites out of their yards... At least in my hood, when people are walking towards each other on sidewalk, one party will move to the street as they pass. People really seem to be adhering to the 6 feet rule.

Yep. I got about 15 polite waves and hellos on my run last night and 2 women who were 60+ that either pointed and mean mugged or snapped at me and made angry bird noises.

The St. Louis Police Chief gave me a friendly wave during my run the other day, so I'm treating that as official guidance that outside exercise is still fine despite the citywide Stay at Home Order.

Yeah, there's definitely plenty of space outside as long as people aren't idiots. They had to close the mountain by my house after Sunday though because there was so many people climbing it. I could see from the park below that there were like 15 people standing around by the summit.

ETA: That's not necessarily that unusual an amount of people, fairly typical (if a little high) for a normal Sunday with good weather, but the idea of being in that close proximity people are probably winded and coughing, etc.

Well we're under the same with specific exemptions to go outside, exercise, and keep your distance from others. Like every other order I've seen, it's ill named, and no one has bothered to read anything. It's just "GUBMENT LOKDOWN COMMUNISM" as most of the squeaky wheels have put it.

Yeah, so back to that. If you assume inherited trauma is a thing (and I do), then it stands to reason that what we're seeing in the United States right now is essentially a dozen generations of inherited false superiority and softness coming home to roost.

What got me thinking about it is that most generations of Americans have never faced the kinds of serious hardships that most Europeans have faced. When the need for social distancing came around and there was a segment trying to make an argument that the World War II generation all pitched in during that time and to be sure that is true, but it was a fucking picnic in the United States compared to most of Europe. Ten times the number American killed in action across all of combat died of hunger in Germany alone (4 million to 400,000, give or take). That was just in Germany. Hunger was endemic throughout Europe at that time.

So that inherited trauma in a lot of European cultures I think helps keep them grounded in times of crisis and just in general how they go about their affairs.

ETA: And I certainly don't want to short sell Pruitt's point about the Jews and the Holocaust during that time, but I think that just further proves my point as it relates to Europe vs. the US. I know a lot of survivors moved to the US and I don't see a lot of American Jews of any descent amongst the idiots I'm talking about as far as American exceptionalism.

This is totally unscientific but my wife at Walmart for 6 months now has asked every customer if they would like to donate to the Children's hospital. Each 6 hour shift she gets from $25-$40. She tells me never has a person under 30 donated. It's always older people. Once a young woman, early 20s bought over $100 in cosmetics but when asked to donate $1, she yelled back that that she was broke now.

Japan is a totally obedient place. Heck after the Tsunami, people would line up to use the phone, and the person in front would never use it too long.

I have to be honest that I’m not very thrilled with the way people at work are managing their social distancing and or dealing with coughs and sneezes. My new boss is the worst actually, and he’s popping in my office constantly right now.

He's about to go front line at one of the local hospitals (Chilton), because "when you make the big bucks you pay the price at some point". Not all of his colleagues are as willing. Will probably be intubating because he's good at it and no one else wants to. He's got medicine* lined up and labeled at home for his wife and kids in case they get sick while he's unavailable. His dad has been fighting cancer for a couple of years now. They haven't seen him in a month or two, and no who knows when they'll see him again in person.


*He's also convinced that corticosteroids could be really effective in treating the effects of the virus, the same way they would for just about anything else where the lungs get inflamed, but for some reason the WHO has downplayed that thus far. He says US doctors are starting to use them. I googled it after talking to him and all of the Feb articles say don't use them and more recent ones are rethinking that.

I have a few spoonfuls of leftover Prednisone. As an asthma sufferer that has struggled with breaths earlier in life... You want that shit. Doc used to call it vitamin P.

I think there is something to inherited trauma (fuck, the German language sends chills down my spine), but this is more of a cultural phenomenon. Americans are taught individualism. Our Founding Fathers and Rev War leaders were akin to terrorist organizations, hiding in trees and killing troops in the days when wars were fought by gentlemanly rules of lining up in order in an open field. We teach kids to distrust authority and stand up for your rights. Our entire Constitution was created to protect people from the government, so when the government wants to crack down on our rights, we are more likely to fight it. Then throw in the popularity of anti-government conspiracy theorists, and this shit is through the roof. Also, more than any country, we are used to having everything we want, when we want it. A lot of Europe lives more farm to market, eating things locally sourced and in season. We demand all produce year round, so we fly in shitty produce from Chile to get us through the Winters.
