My point is it shouldn’t come to that - freeze everything for two months and then re-start.

I actually had a long conversation with my state rep this morning. He's going to push my proposal to the legislative counsel and fiscal analyst.

(I ended up dropping utilities and insurance because it was just getting too complicated.)
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Unfortunately that's not really true. A default is a default and it triggers consequences besides evictions. Many loans and mortgages have acceleration clauses that kick in if payment isn't brought current after a 30-day notice period.

A landlord can declare your lease terminated for nonpayment even if he or she cannot immediately get an order directing you to vacate.

Certainly not the government. The DoD switched up the military pension plan to what is called a "Blended Retirement System" for all individuals who enlist from 1 Jan 2018 and beyond. Those already serving could "opt in" if they weren't past a certain point.

They held town halls locally. They had online training. There was article after article available to us about how this new retirement system was better than the old one.

I kept telling people "Maintain the current High 3 system and contribute to your TSP. Also, start a ROTH IRA."

People argued with me about it and all I could say was "Once the year 2036 rolls around you can prove me wrong all you want. But when has the government *ever* made a change that benefits the people and not itself? The retirement before High 3 was called Final Pay. Look that up. And also remember, we used to get paid every other week and not twice a month. Now you're trading 10% of guaranteed pay for a 5% reduction in your base pay with a 5% matching contribution in an account that's market dependent? Good luck."

Yup. I've taken to wearing disposal gloves whenever I go in.

And then spraying rubbing alcohol all over my car door handle, steering wheel, etc., when I get back home.

I've been bordering on paranoia and everyone just laughs at me. Pretty much the only thing I've been doing is outdoors (lots of hikes/walks) and after hours (bank and post office). Did the steering wheel and gearshift wipedown today. Dunked the grocery delivery in a bleach solution and unboxed the pizza. It's pretty much been my apparent inability to stop drinking beer that has me inside a store. Might as well relax I guess. No way I can keep this up for months.

A landlord can declare your lease terminated for nonpayment even if he or she cannot immediately get an order directing you to vacate.
But they almost always waive and/or reinstate when you come up with the cash and fees. No one requires the accelerated amount because no one really wants your used assets.

Biggest thing with stay type legislation is that I don't pay because it's not in my interest. I want a zero interest loan and I want to extend my payables. Without it, I evaluate non a case by case basis but generally I do pay and certainly pay my secured indebtedness. So you lose the payments from whatever % of payers to rescue nonpayers from essentially credit issues that could be solved on the back end.

Eta:. The benefit to debtors would be to delay the payments til the end of the loan. Question is how to after the fact allow the same thing?

Loans can be automatically extended by the length of whatever deferral period is used. If no interest or fees accrue, it wouldn’t affect the amount of the monthly payment.

I do agree that for almost all mortgages and car loans, the lender would reinstate when the owner resumes payments. But going into default would still cause a lot of anxiety for owners that’d be good to avoid. And landlords might want certain tenants out, especially longer-term commercial leases.

Yep to second paragraph and yes there are valuable long term leases but they will pay if they recognize the value. And it's a relative handful of non-consumer agreements.

But how to achieve paragraph one without discouraging a high number of current payments. Those payments are crucial to those creditors. Trillions and trillions you're talking about. Even 50% is massive.

Sure, and that's a problem. But I figure it's a massive problem anyway, because unless things turn around quickly, they're going to be facing shortfalls anyway. Plus, at that level, creditors are big boys with lots of lawyers, so they will be in a position to work out their own modifications/deferrals, obtain alternative short-term financing, or file Chapter 11 and reorganize. Regular folks with mortgages or leases and car loans can't do that.

I think that's really the bottom line for me. Whatever we do, there are going to be major defaults up and down the financial food chain. So we might as well make sure the incentives are in place for people not to feel pressured to work or to keep their businesses in order to pay monthly bills.

Went to a supermarket pharmacy on Friday to pick up a script for my daughter.

They are ringing me up and the screen pops up with "would like to donate $ to [whatever whatever]"? And there are 4-5 buttons you can press. So I pull my sweatshirt over a knuckle and try to press No. Not sure if it worked but the image went away. Then as I'm ready to leave a different screen with a stylus attached prompts me to sign some HIPAA verification. I look at the lady and say "do I need to do this?". She said yes use the stylus to sign your name. I told her I wasn't doing it and she said ok I can handle on my side.

WTF?! Can't they overwrite this stuff for the time being?

And as noted above, the credit card checkout at registers have the keypad to type in your PIN and the rubber apparatus around the screen makes it difficult to type in anything with anything but your finger/knuckle. I'm bring a pen, popsicle stick or some other disposable object to enter my credentials.

current level of anxiety/depression - moderately high. I have no idea when the poker world will open back up. I have no idea when they will allow live comedy to be a thing again. i have no idea when or how i will make another dollar, and my ability to sit home and eat food is by no means infinite. I have no idea what the fuck i'm supposed to be doing. I picked a really shitty time to quit doing drugs.

Keep writing jokes, man. And maybe post videos of yourself telling them on YouTube. And post them to Twitter. It might be a while before folks can see comedy live again, so take a shot at building an audience through social media. Who knows, you might even be able to make money that way. If nothing else, it'll help you get gigs when the opportunities start coming around again.

Hang in the TT. I know live anything will be really tough to replicate. I agree with Shirley. Could you start a YouTube channel of some sort? Keep your material sharp? What about writing scripts? Maybe the next hit show. Perhaps you can get a head start in a changing world. Let me know if you need any help.

I will say, on the positive tip, I've never seen my neighborhood so active. It's incredible. People practicing social distancing (for the most part).

Only beef is with a couple pretty large group boys riding their bikes. Unless there are sets of brothers, it's about 12 different families sharing germs. Not very bright, but they are outside which apparently helps keep the spread down.

Earlier today I was feeling the start of an anxiety attack - snd then I just reminded myself that there's absolutely nothing that I can do. I can't fix the economy, I can't see what Toronto will be like in 4 weeks, I can't know any of this stuff.

That and a 3 hour walk with the dog calmed my head. It really reinforced both the mindfulness practice I've been trying to absorb (not easy after a lifetime of worrying), as well as the central messages from a couple of books I've been reading.

All I can do is keep the fridge stocked and keep washing my hands.

This has really only strengthened my resolve to bug out of this country ASAP (for a lot of reasons, frankly -- some obvious, some more personal along the carpe diem variety).

Next time I'm able to go to STL gonna have a more serious talk with the company owner about figuring out a way to work for a couple or three years from Thailand to cushion the blow and give me some time to build up more savings.

Yea, whatever I have of anxiety is also manifested as anger at this point. I'm half tempted to post on Facebook for the first time in years about how I truly hope Americans not taking this seriously die from it. I'm just fucking over the entitlement, self centeredness, and laissez faire attitude.

But with my luck it gets screencapped, goes viral, and I get in huge trouble and lose my retirement or some shit.

So I'll just stay bottled up until I can give my opinion and not get in trouble for it.

I will say that Toronto is a ghost town right now.

My daily drive is to the golf course with the dog during what should be rush hour, and the streets are as empty as Christmas Day.

Americans really have that sense of entitlement that is missing from so many other developed countries. The feeling that "no one can tell me what to do"

I mean, for christ sake, Milan is one of the richest cities in the world, full of educated people and great health care, and people are dropping dead there. What more do people need to see before they act responsibly?

And Italy just broke their single day record for COVID deaths, despite weeks of isolation. I don't know about the rest of the country, but NJ is certainly beyond the point where you want to get sick now. ICUs at capacity, COVID patients taking over half the beds in the hospitals, tents are in place, and refrigerated shipping containers in place to start stacking dead bodies. Yet, some asshole in my town FB forum is yelling at everyone for falling for the media hoax.

Interesting to see almost all of the FoxNews spewing idiots who were calling this a hoax have changed their tune and are some of the loudest freaking out when they see a kid in a park. For the most part, it's been nice to see the community rally. People writing riddles in chalk on their driveways, putting different things in windows every day (teddy bears, rainbow pictures, shamrocks...) so kids can do scavenger hunts, tons of people offering to get stuff at the store for those who can't, food sharing networks for people out of work... It's a different level of friendliness when people say hi as they go for walks or bike rides, too. Really wishing I owned a bike right now...

But, if they tell us we can't go outside to exercise anymore, I'm going to lose it.
