Our good friends up the street have had a toilet, microwave and oven (two of the burners on the stovetop still work) go this week. Rough timing.

Pills scare the ever loving hell out of me. Alcohol tastes gross, weed is a pita and stinks, pills though? just take them with some water? I'd be an addict in a heartbeat.

Fuck no, that's way too much work, just take the pills.

Texas is a shit show, but most states prohibit landlords from forcing tenants out right now. That's why we decided not to rent. I'd find out if they can force you out.

A friend’s father just died from COVID-19 in Michigan. His son was in Phoenix and wasn’t able to travel there to be with him and they can’t do a funeral or memorial service for quite some time of course. Just heartbreaking.

So....has anyone heard of the 'Covid Toes' thing?

What are 'COVID toes'? Dermatologists, podiatrists share strange findings

I stumbled onto that link...and I'm pretty sure that I had this. Couple of weeks ago...pretty much exactly as the description/pictures show. I thought it was just athletes foot...or some kind of reaction to the new wool slippers I got. But after seeing that...I'm not so sure.

The client I was working for in March apparently still has their next event in mid-June on schedule, based on an email I got last night. At least the masks my wife makes are good (or the one that is big enough for me, anyway).

Maybe I should have written that on the confessions page.

At the end of the school year when my 5th graders graduate, I know there are always a few that will never visit, move, go off to private school, etc. So it's students I'm very close to, some I've known for 6 years and it just ends, but you move on and get ready for next year. Losing all of the transition for that is tough.

5th grade spring is great for most students -- there's a musical they do followed by a giant party, a graduation ceremony followed by a giant party, a spring festival, our annual 5th grade pizza lunch field trip, a nice yearbook with signing and more. Also, teachers ease up a ton with work and disciple (somewhat). When the announcement was made we heard reports of 5th graders crying. Besides missing out on all the fun stuff there is so much to help them transition from their childhood school community to the scary world of middle school. There transition was finding out at 5:30 there would be no school tomorrow then slowly seeing the break go on and on until it's all canceled. And then there's my friend with a kid who's a senior in high school...it just sucks.

It's not financial or health anxiety but it's a cause of rumination and too much drinking (by me, not the 5th graders...I hope)

Opposite story: My mom worked at a middle school and there was one kid she really liked who was in 7th grade and told her he was moving over the summer, so she said goodbye and was sad about it after the last day. First day of the next school year, the kid shows up like normal and just smiles at her. She loved it.

My daughter is in 5th grade and missing out on all of those things you mentioned. She is crushed, but dealing with it. I hope it isn't just because she thinks there is a chance they go back to school. Every year the 5th graders put on a show that they (mostly parent volunteers) write, perform, build the sets etc... The show was scheduled for the week after school shutdown. Our school shut down earlier than most, as a parent with kids in the school was one of the first positive cases in the state. They decided no to cancel the show a week out, because they thought we'd only close for a few days, then additional schools started closing, so our joined in. It does suck to leave elementary school without a goodbye. My daughter is extremely close to the principal and a couple past teachers, and it will crush her if she doesn't get to say goodbye. They also do a clapout on the last day of school, where all the kids line the hallways and clap out the fifth graders on the last day of school, and parents are outside the front door clapping, they write every kids name in chalk on the sidewalk in front of the school, and earlier in the day they have a graduation ceremony. My son is in 8th grade, and surprisingly upset about missing a graduation ceremony. They sent a survey last week asking parents if they prefer an online graduation in June or a ceremony in July or August if we can't have a ceremony in June. My son is strongly opposed to the online ceremony. I'm confident I didn't give a fuck about my 8th grade graduation, but I didn't even attend my college graduation ceremony despite having my parents in town. With a class of over 5,000 graduates, whats the point?

So...is this a safe space to say how absolutely brutal this is to have a HS senior? All end of high school traditions are on fire and graduation is likely gone or via zoom. And there is hella uncertainty over college starting in the fall. Quinn is doing the best he can, but, selfishly, can I just say how much this blows?

I have a good friend who's son is a senior in High School, in Santa Cruz. My friend moved to Florida for work back in January, and his wife and son are supposed to join him this summer and then the kid was going to start at Loyola Marymount this fall.

That's totally up in the air now, and the kid is seriously considering taking a gap year. Their thinking is 'why pay a bunch of money for online classes?'.

That's an interesting take. I would have loved online classes and would have finished faster too. I never took a full course load because I worked. I would have been able to if they were online back then like they are now.

I don't see anything unique about one not wanting to waste a year of campus life by doing classes online. Online classes are great for those who need it, but there's no way I'd trade my college experiences so I could sit in front of a computer all day to get it done quicker.

Exactly....so much of college is the 'being out on your own/making new friends' thing. It goes way beyond just sitting in classes.

I had a good stress dream last night (the classic 'trying to get to the airport on time' one) after worrying last night about my daughter. She's been finishing up her semester in online classes, but I'm worried about what she's going to do with her time once that's done in two weeks. Its not like she can go find a job right now. And what about in the fall, if Gonzaga doesn't open back up?

This is true. I've come to realize that there is a much more unique experience going to US Universities. Canadian Universities are shit. The majority of students in Canada go to the University in their city, so there's not much dorm or campus life, it's commuting from home. There isn't much of fraternities or sororities. There's no emphasis on years, just complete 40 courses whenever for a major. And no Ivy League so the school you went to isn't a big deal, they're all the same.

It''s pretty much socialist schooling.

Fuck yeah, they did!

Someone posted a link on the Town FB forum of an NBC article quoting doctors as saying it's irresponsible of Trump to suggest injecting household cleaners. First response was knocking the source because "NBC CONcast."
Let's list all the experts in America, or the world, for this matter who have been showing us that they have a clue about this virus. Hhhmmm coming up with no one? Why single out this man?
Yes, how dare we criticize the President during the worst botched national crisis in history, I mean, he was only suggesting we inject bleach directly into our blood since it kills viruses on counter tops. What do we have to lose?
This post is irresponsible. Another never Trumper with a knee jerk reaction to a headline from a media, that has been proven will say anything to take Trump down.
Knee jerk reaction? Sure, maybe injecting bleach and internally exposing UV rays will magically cure the virus.

Trump used the word “inject,” but what he was referring to was using a process which he left “medical doctors” to define, in which patients’ lungs might be cleared of the virus, given new knowledge about its response to light and other factors. There are ways to "lavage" or wash out lungs
This was followed by several people agreeing that the media twists Trumps words into something horrible. Hilarious that the media quoted Trump directly, yet they take his very clear and simple statement and say he really meant a complex and multi-layered thing that isn't remotely similar, but the direct quote is twisting the meaning.
"CLAIM: President Donald Trump suggested injecting people with disinfectant to cure coronavirus.
VERDICT: False. Trump was speaking generally about new information about sunlight, heat, and disinfectant killing the virus."
-Followed by a link to a Breitbart article twisting Trump's simple statement 25 ways to insinuate the media lied by quoting him. Looks like Breitbart is stealing the Snopes model to make it look like their propaganda is fact checked truth. Super.

Mine is going back to Boston no matter what I think. Is living off campus, so will just do online from there instead of here I guess.

As a parent with two kids in college... Fuck paying full freight for online classes.

This is going to be a HUGE issue for higher education come this fall. I'd wager they are going to be down 25-40 percent enrollment if they go with online classes. They are scrambling right now.

Absolutely. When my son started whining, I told him he should be thankful this wasn't his senior year of HS or college, and explained why. That totally backfired, and I realized minimizing his real sense of loss by telling him how much worse others have it wasn't the way to go. Same for my daughter. I feel worse for the college seniors. Imagining going home thinking you'll be back in a few weeks, then realizing you will never get to say goodbye to college friends or get closure on the college experience? Then entering the real world into 20%+ unemployment and worldwide lockdown?

Maybe missing out on all the HS Senior stuff is worse, though. I don't know. I was ready to be done with HS, but I do have a lot of fond memories of all the graduation parties and the rite of passage summer following graduation.
