Shit. I should have read on. He actually may be NOT ok:
If you still have your job but lose money from a side gig
Under the stimulus bill’s Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, workers previously ineligible for benefits, such as the self-employed, can receive unemployment aid for up to 39 weeks, as well as $600 per week until July 31 if they lose work due to the pandemic.

But, if you qualify for traditional unemployment through a job you still have, you won’t qualify for PUA for lost income from a side hustle.

For example, let’s say you’re able to continue working your day job from home. However, the earnings you make driving for Uber, which actually make up the majority of your income, have vanished during the pandemic.

Because you still have your W-2 job with an employer, you won’t qualify for any unemployment aid.

I probably don't need to add that he is a hardcore right winger, totally against social programs. Unless, of course, he's getting his.
File an anonymous complaint with the Unemployment Board. I'm fortunate in my job that we have a separate team that handles Unemployment Insurance, so I don't need to understand it, but I'm pretty sure gig economy jobs aren't eligible for UI. Unless he is an employee and not a 1099 and paying into UI. I know there are separate rules for the COVID $600 check. I've received dozens of emails full of docs explaining it and webinars on the topic, but I didn't get around to them.

The difference between the Left and Right is the Left would rather err on the side of a few people getting away with scamming the system to make sure those in need get help, while the Right have a fear of someone taking advantage of the system and screwing them, and would rather err on the side of people in need going without to prevent a few from scamming. I think in part, those on the Right are more motivated by fear, but also they know they would scam the system if they could, and assume everyone else would too.

This is very new law and few if any cases have made it through the rounds of appeals to a trial level judge much less appellate judges that might interpret the statutory language. Most agency level determinations around here are hit or miss on a good day never mind ten times the volume. To me the rubber would hit the road on weekly certifications. If he truthfully answers and still get benefits good for him. If not it's fraud and could be subject to criminal charges... I've defended a few of those years ago when the labor commish went hard after overpayments and instructed agency staff to file piles of criminal warrant applications (unbelievably in GA anyone can file for a warrant against anyone else and require a two party probable cause type hearing to determine whether a warrant should issue and case transfer to solicitor/DA). All in all I wouldn't get involved for sure, if for no other reason than those benefits might run out next week if no congressional extension. Congress really did create a huge incentive for these actions with the new federal payments. Amount just plain too big.

How long has he been back at his regular job? Sometimes, it just takes a few weeks for the red flag to be raised.

(As a freelancer for almost all of my professional life, I have some experience dealing with unemployment in some non-Kentucky states.)

Forgot to relay this little story...

I was in the supermarket yesterday, was still wearing my sort of droopy what-with-my-wallet-and-phone-and-keys-in-my-pockets drawstring running shorts, and was squatting down look at something. I guess I was showing a little crack, or at least back, and a woman walked by and said "might want to pull up your pants". I apologized, and when I looked up at her as she passed, she had her mask on, but down around her neck. Bit my tongue...

I guess I will post this here because its only sort of Corona related.

I have a show wednesday at Houston Improv, and its sold out. I am feeling a whole hell of a lot of pressure to come out and perform well, which sucks because i haven't even gotten to open mic since march. I'm going to be rusty with shit timing in a weird crowd dynamic, and this is the first time i'll be featured at improv. might be my last. Add that to the fact that maybe 2 percent of comics in the country are getting to work right now, how in the fuck did i get to be one of them? Its a weird feeling.

This is a new one. Was heading into Kroger and guy in front of me didn’t have mask on. Poor teenager stops him says he has to have mask. Guy didn’t fight about it loudly but was like “I just need one thing” but teenager holds ground. Says we have masks right here you can buy a package. Guy huffs but grabs the mask pack (10 for $8). I get my bag of ice and the guy is walking out in front of me. He had just two things in the bag. Some ice cream, and the masks that he didn’t open and wear immediately. Just grabbed a pack and carried it around store but decided to go ahead and buy it.

My town went 3 weeks without a single active case. Last week we got one active case in the community and 5 "Vulnerable Population Institutions" which combines elder care centers and a rehab hospital in town. Then a few days later 5 active community cases and 11 VPIs. All 5 community cases were "young adults" suspected to have contracted the virus at the Jersey Shore. The Mayor gives a daily report, but she can't say if any of the 5 were related or friends who went on vacation together.

I would never sign off on a shortened version. The first joke gets maybe 20% of the audience to laugh and then the second one makes that 20% stop but reels in a different small percentage who are part of the in-group who knew the first joke sucked and that's the joke.

Man I miss the local spot. Forget games I just want to hang and see the bartenders and regulars. It's open but I'm scared shitless. Kind of a smokey divey place... clothes and ladies hair reek of smoke afterward. Just the kind to pick up covid quick. Almost brought a sixer to the patio but scared to even do that.

Our school district is officially giving each student a choice of a hybrid part in-person/part virtual learning experience or 100% virtual. Got a VM last night, we have not logged into the school portal to read the details yet.

We have a similar option. Not sure what we are doing yet. My son prefers to stay 100% virtual, my daughter wants 100% in school (not an option). It will either be half day in school with some virtual, or half day in school every other week, alternating weeks between in school and virtual, with option of doing 100% virtual. Not sure if in-school instruction will be broadcast, or different teachers for virtual.

I’m not sure how that is going to be logistically feasible from a teaching perspective when it comes to the activities and assessments that will work in person vs online. This is not merely about “hey, you’re a professional, you figure it out.” I have 4 different preps, so some students in hybrid vs some students in distance learning is going to degrade the learning experiences for both. Parent will naturally talk about differences in rigor and time commitment for student between the online and in-person activities and find ways to try to exploit that and administrations will be overwhelmed with those inquiries. I only say this from experience in my district, so ymmv.

I know districts are under a lot of pressure from state and federal officials to offer in-person school, but if were not opening restaurants and we’re canceling political conventions because it’s still too dangerous in terms of virus transmission, it might be too early to open the up the schools, even in a hybrid fashion. Giving the option to parents sounds prudent in theory, but is going to be problematic in practice and not worth the public health risks.

Eta: it’s killing me not to be in school with my students. I am a more discussion oriented teacher and zoom is not yet an effective tool for that. Teaching itself is a very social experience and the best teachers are the ones who are able to make human connections with their students through personal social interaction that online technology fails to convey. I know kids are suffering from the lack of in-person instruction, especially those in the elementary and middle school. Despite wanting nothing more than to be in my classroom, be with my co-workers (were an incredibly right department) and do what I do best, I’m still thinking it is too soon, and opening too early will mean prolonged closures down the road.

Looks like our county is doing online to start the year. Private schools in town apparently still a go, but they are in a horrible position. No one wants to pay a bunch of money for online classes for fourth graders.

Schools are either going to proactively go online-only to start and deal with the backlash or they're going to try half-measures and then scale back once a few teachers/staff/students inevitably end up sick making online a more acceptable decision. Its all so fucked up.

My wife has informed me that a lot of schools in our area are going to send kids in two non-consecutive days a week at half-capacity with masks required and social distancing rules in effect with distance learning to complement the other three days of the week. Teachers will go in all five weekdays, four for teaching, but online materials (videos, etc.) will undoubtedly take up a large part of the day without students. She did mention older students being online only, but I don't know if she was specifically interested in fifth grade and younger due to our kids' ages.

Haven't seen what our school district is going to do, but they are supposed to announce next week.

I don't see how high school and middle schools can socially distance. Having kids roaming the halls to change classes just isn't feasible. I can see social distancing working in elementary schools, but I don't see that being any safer for teachers and employees. Meanwhile, Republicans are calling for opening schools with no restrictions, and blaming Dems as playing politics and wanting to ask questions about safety in order to make Trump look bad.

Very bright line on this around here. And I was one of those assholes withholding tuition payments until an announcement was made. So yeah bad spot. Pretty much all the metro privates open in person in two weeks and pretty much all the metro publics are remote. This will exacerbate economic disparities particularly if it goes on for a year. Remote school is not an adequate learning method for many or most.

And no chance to social distancing. Was out with my daughter and friends family over weekend and everytime I physically grabbed her shoulders to move her the other kids just kept following despite repeated reminders about grandma. Like a game of follow the leader... Literally trailing behind her. If I weren't there would have been 10x worse. Schools will need to spend the entire first week teaching covid procedures. And they'll all go out the window by recess. You can have low risk education, just not with kids or young adults. No way no how will they be able to pull that off. That said, theres an unspoken expectation that it will spread through everyone and we will just deal with consequences. Just no way with the level of plague we have right now.

School district where the wife teaches have decided to offer a hybrid schedule or total virtual learning. The hybrid schedule would be students last name A-K go to school on M and W and T and Th will be virtual learning for them. L-Z will be M and W virtual learning, T and Th in class. Friday is virtual for all students.

They are asking for applications to be the virtual teacher for the class level for their respective elementary school. Some class levels will have multiple virtual classroom teachers. They will be using Canvas and another program to present their lessons and will have to use a strict guideline in what will be taught. They are still not sure if the virtual teacher will be in charge of the hybrid learners when they are not in school. Classroom teachers will have between 12-15 students a day. The students in 'A' block will share their desks with students in 'B' block. The reasoning is that there won't be any confusion on what desks need cleaned each night. They will have some corrugated cardboard partitions between desks that can be cleaned. The only problem is that they aren't see through. My wife found some nice ones that had plastic inserts that would have been 1000% times better than the cardboard ones. Can't get them because her principal has already ordered the other ones. Lowe's even was willing to donate some amount of Plexiglas, but there was so much fucking red tape to get a donation for the school it was put on pause. I told her just have them donate to you and not worry about the school.

My wife met with her principal yesterday and he assured her that school would be staring as scheduled on August 12th. The virtual teachers are only getting 2 days to train on the new software. No instructions have been given to the in-class teachers. The administration and school board are gung-ho about starting the school year. No mention at all of delaying until after Christmas or even Labor Day. Got to get them 180 days in.

The head football coach contracted Covid. One of my wife's co-worker contracted Covid. There are at least 3 families just in the elementary school where she teaches that has someone in their immediate family contract Covid.

This is just a terrible idea all around. As stated by someone above. If they are canceling conventions and other large gatherings, why schools?

I'm sure everyone knows this by now, but its because you can't force everyone back to work if schools are closed. The only thing conservatives care about less than other people and their kids is public education.

Why are we worried about anything but safety and doing everything we can to stamp out COVID at this point? Kids were out for 2.5-3.5 months in the spring, truly not that long. Education isn't a race, and kids are just learning different shit now. Don't get me wrong, there are major child care issues with not having schools open, and it is going to undoubtedly affect people of color and poor communities much harder. Kids are resilient, and if they happen to be half a year "behind" with trigonometry or biology, it's not the end of the world. Plus, who are they behind? Their other friends who are also behind? I think we need to show ourselves and our children and their formal education a little more grace as we go through all this.

ETA - Mr. D answers my post above, as I'm writing it.

Which is why we need proper unemployment benefits, universal health care, etc. THIS IS NOT THAT FUCKING HARD.
I took a two hour nap and cried during parks and Rec. it was awesome and terrifying.

The only hope is if everyone is really good about wearing masks and washing their hands. And teachers/work crews are diligent about sanitizing as much as possible.

Circle back up to what Delaware said... It's going to be damn near impossible in some parts of the country where this is still flaring. I think in the NE, where everyone continues to take it seriously, there's a fighting chance.

But you're wrong about the educational impact. It will be real. And you do compete with private school kids for opportunities and other states kids' and other countries kids. That's real. And there will be an impact on achievement and testing. I agree to some extent that you just adjust the pace of learning (way slower) and move on but don't dismiss those costs. They're real and will impact opportunities.
