Over The Top (1987)
Director: Menahem Golan, the Israeli Tony Scott (His Wikipedia page is worth a perusal, if nothing else because he’s part of the creative team that almost singlehandedly killed the superhero movie genre with Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. That’s a hell of a thing. When Tim Burton’s Batman came out in 1989, it was a legit question if the superhero movie was dead forever, you guys.
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Robert Loggia
Running Time: 93 minutes
Budget: $25 million (literally almost all of this is Stallone’s (at the time, record) $15 million acting fee)
Box Office: $16 million
Streaming Availability: Tubi TV (free app with no signup)
On-demand/PPV: $2.99 on most cable and satellite systems.
Start Time: 9 p.m. Eastern time (movie starts at 9:15 p.m. to allow for stragglers)
Notes: Scored by the great Giorgio Moroder, which is worth an investment of 90 minutes if nothing else.

Not only does the film not pass the Bechdel test, I’m about 90 percent sure there’s not even a single line of dialogue in the movie between two women.

If you’re not sure what you’re getting into the soundtrack features tracks by (in no particular order): Kenny Loggins, Sammy Hagar, Robin Zander, Asia, Frank Stallone and Eddie Money.

FAQ

Brian, why are we watching a mid-80s movie about professional arm wrestling starring Sylvester Stallone?

If you weren't at least a little intrigued by the end of that sentence this movie might not be for you. It is also nominally a sports movie.

Tubi TV, that sounds like a front for Chechen mobsters?

I've used it a few times and seems to be legit. Don't have to sign up for an account and while there's not exactly the most primo selection of movies you can't beat the price.

Good choice. I remember it being on cable, but not a whole lot more.

Also: nitpick, but $15 million is not "literally almost all of" $25 million.

OK, but it's pretty rare for one actor's salary to eat up more than 50 percent of a movie's budget. (And it shows.)

Tubi isn't bad at all. Just watched Melancholia and there were probably only 3 ad breaks. (And it's what like a 2.5 hr movie?)

I don't know that I've actually sat through this one. I took this week off, but I think I'm back in for this film.

Anyone else take a first date to Stallone's "Lock Up"?

No, just me?

There was no second date, though I did run into her a few years back and she's a really nice lady.

Gotta tip your cap to Stallone for having that kind of a sense of humor about his filmography.

I think the board works better so we can actually hear the movie. The three weeks thus far, there are people who either have not ever seen the movie or have not seen the edited version in a long time and this week will be the same.

I'm with DSafe on this one. I like the idea of some sort of live feed for something else, but this works best as-is.

Because this movie is a little shorter and some of you might need some time to get Tubi TV loaded on your TV rigs, we'll start at 9:15 p.m. ET tonight. We'll pause the movie right around the 45-minute mark after the scene (and this isn't a spoiler) where Lincoln Hawk(s) is sitting on the back of his big rig looking forlornly at the port of San Pedro.

Tubi has been downloaded. Briefly scrolling through, I saw the Schwarzenegger "Total Recall", which I know has been mentioned somewhere as a possibility for this.

Tubi gives you like an 8 second warning when ads are coming up. No idea if they'd be at the same time for everyone. fyi

I didn’t get any ads as far as I watched but I’m watching through my cable system so not sure if there are ads. How long did it take for an ad to load?

I'd guess it's like 1 ad break/~45 mins.

If there's a chance the ads could leave us out of sync, I'm fine laying down $4 to rent from YouTube or wherever.

I'd feel a little better knowing that the ads are in the same place. There is a rental option on my cable system for $2.99 and I tend to agree that $3 is not a big deal.

From my research it looks like Over The Top is only a one-ad for 30 seconds or so movie so I don’t think anyone is going to get behind and we’ll be able to synch up at our break. I’m game to just rent it if that’s what everyone prefers though.

Based on the first three weeks, it would be a miracle if more than three people were actually within 30 seconds of each other, anyway.

At least rass won't have to rewind for Swayze's ass tonight.

I don't know what your TV/whatever situation is, but Tubi was a free app, took under a minute for me to download today, and functions with Chromecast.

Just two logo intros taking under 30 seconds at the start, so an easy roll in from before the MGM lion.
