John Prine.
He wasn’t a coal fan but I was a fan of his.

Re: John Prine.
Damn. This hurts. I was lucky enough to have seen him live a couple times. And, he figured in a fun memory from my vacation last year in Prague, Czechia. One afternoon we stopped at a beer garden where a guitarist and violinist were playing and singing. Right after we sat down, they played "Souvenirs". I said, "Yeah, John Prine!" The singer was shocked and happy somebody knew John Prine. We chatted with him on his break - so then, he played three more John Prine songs for us in the next set.

Re: John Prine.
Interesting article. John Prine’s very first review, when he was an unsigned nobody, was written by film critic Roger Ebert, 50 years ago.

Someone, relatively famous but I can't remember who, tweeted last night that when he was growing up, Ebert lived around the corner, and Prine would play shows around the block.

Re: John Prine.
I have to be honest, he's a pretty big cultural blind spot for me which is surprising given the number of artists I follow who adore him. If you asked me gun to my head, I'd only be able to name one song before yesterday.
Gonna fix that today.

Enjoy the ride, Giff.
I'm by no means a knowledgeable music person, but for some reason I found Prine and he's been a staple for many many years.
This shit fucking sucks.

I've always loved this song and by always I mean for like 4 years. Anyone recognize the female singer's voice from a TV Show Intro?

Re: John Prine.
In his early days, John Prine often used to play double-bills with a guy named Steve Goodman (who died young, but wrote City of New Orleans and a bunch of other great stuff). They played together at Colorado State when I was a student there, and that's when I first got into him. Then, about five years later, I had a girlfriend (from Mount Holly, New Jersey!) who was a big fan. She'd play his records all the time and we went to see him play in Denver, at the old Rainbow Music Hall.

Albums to start with?
Re: John Prine.
He's got a couple "Best of" albums, but I think the best one is his very first one, which is self-titled, and pictured on the youtube video I posted above.

Re: John Prine.
Also, for Giff and PDX and anybody else new to Prine, you should know that he had throat cancer in the late 90s, and his voice and singing are different ever since then.

Kinda crazy that the two most famous people (that I can think of, anyway) to have had facial reconstruction/removal surgery after cancer are Ebert and Prine.

Tis... She's also associated with another show, though it wasn't the intro song. A different song of hers was featured in the season finale of another popular in a niche kind of way show.

I've listened to him before, probably due to comments on this board, but it never really stuck with me. But I've been listening to his debut album the last few days over and over. What a great songwriter.

Jason Isbell: John Prine Taught Me to Stay Vulnerable
A few years ago, my wife, Amanda Shires, was touring in Scandinavia with John Prine, and when they arrived in Sweden she saw him write “songwriter” on his customs form as his occupation. “When did you decide that it was OK to write ‘songwriter’ on these forms?” she asked him. “Today,” he told her. “I usually put dancer.”

After the CMA’s didn’t honor John during their recent award show, Jason Isbell and his wife Amanda Shires turned in their lifetime memberships and won’t participate in any of their events anymore.

That was a stunning misstep by the CMAs. Whoever was in charge owes an explanation.Square Rob wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 8:01 am After the CMA’s didn’t honor John during their recent award show, Jason Isbell and his wife Amanda Shires turned in their lifetime memberships and won’t participate in any of their events anymore.

Didn't honor Jerry Jeff Walker or Billy Joe Shaver either.

Re: John Prine.
Yeah, I posted about that last week in another thread, and wondered why none of you fuckers commented.
As far as I know, the CMA never commented on it. Sturgill Simpson and Margo Price also made loud comments about it.
