I read that a few months ago, then picked up a couple of his first books. Amazing how much better of a writer he is now.

Also, I hope he continues with science. I enjoy his travel writing, but A Short History and The Body blow those books away.

Just finished the last book in Philip Pullman's Darkest Materials series and came away disappointed. The series starts off as a children's book and then turns into a deep philosophy/religious examination. I wonder if my feeling on the book is being influenced by life being so fucked up now -- it's not to focus on reading for me at the time so my next book should be something lighter. One great aspect of this series was there were parts in it where I had no idea where the story was going, which was cool

Always liked his travel books. 1/3rd of the way in and it's good.

Just finished this one. it was a really fun and easy read from a genre I'm typically not all that into.

Started this one yesterday and about 1/4 of the way through.

Knocked out half of this yesterday. Then watched too much coverage of the DC riots last night. Not that I was going to vote for Trump, but after reading this you just realize how not only does he not know what he is doing, but how bad the republican leadership is to let basic management of the country be run so poorly.

I finished Drew Magary's new book a couple of days ago:

Have really mixed feelings about it. I thought the Sci-Fi aspects were really good (the global implications of being able to teleport from your phone), but that the plot was so-so. And I wasn't completely sold on Drew's being able to write a love story between two teen aged women. Mostly power scanned through those parts.

It's taking me forever to read because it's so full of information and so many holy shit moments. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Any recommendations for a first Elmore Leonard book to read?

Elmore Leonard books go by in a breeze. Pick up any of them. Rum Punch, Out of Sight, Killshot, Miami Blues, Get Shorty... You can't go wrong.

This was an interesting read even if it kind of skimmed over the ultimate result.

Seconded. You can even start with one if you've seen the movie version, just as a bridge. Still enjoyable.

His westerns are good too.

Man, I haven't read one in a long time. I need to read a couple in a week and then watch Jackie Brown (hated missing last night!!), Get Shorty and Out of Sight all in a row.

1/3 of the way through and not yet convinced it's not a book about a penis.

When I was kid, the independent TV station out of Oakland (KTVU) would have Soul Train and Hee Haw on back to back on Saturday evenings.

Probably not a lot of cross-over between those audiences.
