The OFFICIAL DMB Thread

Post by mister d »

http://www.mattnorlander.com/blog/2020/ ... ong-ranked

I'm going through his list and just got here:

155. I Did It (Everyday). The song that changed the direction of DMB’s trajectory forever. The music video remains bizarrely hilarious. Wow, this was so long ago.

And it rings sooooooo true. Complete switch flip the first time I heard it, especially coming after the Lillywhites.

84. Grey Street (Busted Stuff). Song in its original form, which included three verses and four choruses, would be ~60 spots higher. But it hasn’t been played that way since 2002. Truncated Grey Street is Actual Grey Street, and Actual Grey Street is a shell of itself at the height of its powers. UPDATE: Approximately one hour after this list published the morning of April 14, Matthews sang/played the third verse of Grey Street for the first time in almost 18 years. The selection committee has never been dealt such a curveball and is awaiting more information before potential re-ranking can be done.

Just got there. Original “Grey Street” is at minimum at top 10 for me.

Looking through that list it's amazing how many songs I don't know. I was pretty big into Dave in the mid-late 90s.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

I would have done the brackets but they have to be printed so F that.

Alpine: (5) The Best of What's Around
West Palm: (9) Granny (recency bias here given I totally forgot about this song and then listened to the Central Park version ... weakest region)
Deer Creek: (3) Two Step (absolute brutal underseeds of Lover Lay Down, Drive In Drive Out and Jimi Thing)
Saratoga: (1) #41 (more underseeds here w/ Dancing Nancies and Cry Freedom)

Printed one. I’m stuck at 6. Can’t decide between a couple.

Alpine - Typical Situation def. Say Goodbye
West Palm - Lie In Our Graves def. Recently
Deer Creek - Jimi Thing def. Rhyme & Reason
SPAC - Dreaming Tree def. #41

Jimi Thing over Typical Situation to cut the nets down. The nets are made from the hair of that girl in 11th grade that sent of front of you with the Under the Table and Dreaming long-sleeve tee.

Stefan Lessard and Steve Lillywhite got into a twitter fight last night over the Lillywhite Sessions. The end of this thread has a lot about it (and no, I am not the one who came up with the Bill Belichick comparison). One tidbit, Carter and Roi got mad at Lilywhite because he brought girls back to the studio and introduced them as "Dave and his band." A lot of it was deleted but some tweets were saved before being deleted.

I think Lillywhite takes too much credit for the band's success*, and the proof was his return to record Away From the World in 2012. Fans were so excited about his return, yet when it came out it was a continuation of the "new" DMB you don't like (and a step down from the Big Whiskey Album). Artists change as they get older and have more power over recording. If Lillywhite stays on, there probably is one more great album from that era, but then DMB would still change like they did or break up (which I remember saying would have been likely if they stayed on to finish with Lillywhite).

*Much of the songs of the Lillywhite album were developed and popular live songs well before they recorded, and you can see why DMB were becoming great before entering the studio. I'm sure Lillywhite did wonderful things to produce superb albums, but DMB became successful because of Dave Matthews.

That said, Stefan Lessard is awful on twitter, but at least he is one of my 36 followers.

I think I mostly agree because my walk-away point was due to terrible writing, not terrible production, so unless Lillywhite ghost wrote or edited, he wasn’t a driver. That said ... imagine having a band you’ve worked with for a decade or so shelve a really great album you worked on to put out laughable pop nonsense with someone else then release some of “your” songs as shittier versions of their unfinished selves? That has to be upsetting.

Yes, Lillywhite got fucked over by them, which made his return in 2012 surprising, and the bad aftermath afterwards not surprising

This is the first music for Proudest Monkey. It's just Dave strumming a bit, but it is distinctly Proudest Monkey.
And Get in Line hasn't been played since 1994. And Rusted Root!

They sounded so much much better back then. Roi was perfect for them and so much better than Coffin even though Coffin is talented, and I like Tim Reynolds...BUT the sound is so much cleaner without him. And Boyd....get your act together

Lessard has been playing his bass along with some recordings on twitter. (It's better than him posting about politics)

We skipped Band of Horses 2(?) summers ago out of fear the half-lineup wouldn't be the same and because a lot of the newer stuff is pretty bad.
