Swamp Out of the Park Baseball 2020 - SEASON AWARDS

Post by Johnny Carwash »

Alright, here we go again...

Image

After a delay, I'm happy to announce that there will in fact be real baseball in 2020 in the form of the Swamp Baseball League, unlike the fictional entity called "Major League Baseball." Since we're starting late, what I'm planning to do is run all of April at once to get caught up (trying for this weekend), and then try to stick to a weekly update schedule after that.

2019 Season Recap
The Burlington Sports Frogs slumped a little from their first two seasons, but still managed to win a weak division and advance to the league championship series, where they were swept by the eventual champion Regina Monologues.

The Holland Oats rode a second-half surge to a division title on their end and similarly advanced to the league championship round, where they lost a seven-game heartbreaker to the Fresno Business Horses.

Here's a quick recap of the final season standings and Swamper team stats from last year:

LEAGUE STANDINGS

BURLINGTON - STARTING LINEUP

Image

2020 Salary: $23.1M

A_B turned in another fine season as one of the league's better catchers and was rewarded with a gaudy new contract in the offseason. A_B has a nice, even stroke and good power to the gaps. He is a dependable defensive catcher who can also play first in a pinch. He continues to be slow as shit on the basepaths.

Head Scout says: "A_B is considered one of the team leaders."

Image

2020 Salary: $11.5M

Brontoburglar continued his odd decline from his stellar 2017 campaign, with his numbers slumping again across the board into mediocrity. Whether he can reclaim his earlier form remains one of the team's biggest question marks. Bronto may not have the big-time power of some first basemen, but brings a smooth stroke and good batting eye to the plate. He is a slick fielder who can also play the outfield when needed.

Head Scout says: "Brontoburglar has a good head on his shoulders."

Image

2020 Salary: $30.0M

Surly superstar wlu_lax didn't miss a step after re-signing a monster contract and racked up another MVP-caliber season, earning his third straight All-Star berth. He remains one of the league's best players, with outstanding all-around batting talents that regularly put him near the top of the leaderboards in multiple categories. In the field, he is sure-handed with good range, and skilled at turning the double play. The big caveat remains his personality, described previously as "greedy, lazy, disloyal, and devoid of leadership skills...basically a cornucopia of every bad personality trait."

Head Scout says: "wlu_lax has very little loyalty and often shows a lack of effort."

Image

2020 Salary: $850k

Ryan showed a modest improvement in his second season as the team's regular starting shortstop. He won't wow anyone at the plate, but is a fair contact hitter who managed to improve his power from "nonexistent" to "eat shit, Rafael Belliard!" He can also use his above-average speed to leg out a decent number of triples. In the field, he has good range, though his relatively weak arm hampers him somewhat at short.

Head Scout says: "Ryan is comfortable in front of a camera."

Image

2020 Salary: $16.0M

Local favorite Pruitt struggled through a horrendous first half of the season before rebounding a little in the second half, though his final numbers remained far from his former All-Star form. It may be time for him to take advantage of Canada's lauded pharmaceutical industry as he gears up for a critical year. When at his best, Pruitt's quick wrists and good judgment keep him a persistent threat to go deep, and he won't strike out as much as some other power hitters. In the field he is adequate if unspectacular, with a solid arm.

Head Scout says: "Pruitt is an outstanding representative of the team. The fans love him."

Image

2020 Salary: $3.5M (contract year)

Veteran journeyman Nonlinear FC came over from Holland in an early-season trade and gave the Frogs' outfield a shot in the arm with solid all-around play. A slashing hitter, he'll rack up a good number of singles and doubles, though he has a tendency to get overzealous and strike out a little too often. With good speed, he is a heady runner and a competent outfielder who can cover all three positions. He can occasionally leg out a hit on a bunt.

Head Scout says: "Nonlinear FC is usually in the center of whatever hijinks are going on."

Image

2020 Salary: $3.8M

EnochRoot had another solid year as the team's regular center fielder. As a hitter, Enoch is capable of posting a decent average and fair power, though he struggled again versus lefties (.218 BA) and may end up platooned at least some of the time. He again led the team with 38 steals, while cutting his times caught to just 7. He can fill all three outfield positions with good range.

Head Scout says: "EnochRoot is mild mannered."

Image

2020 Salary: $13.1M

Gunpowder cemented his status as an emerging superstar, leading the league in HR and RBI to go with a 30-point improvement in batting average, and was voted the team's MVP for the second straight year. He also significantly cut-down his strikeout rate, proving an excellent well-rounded hitter who can also draw a good share of walks. Gunpowder has fair speed and is a heads-up runner and sure-handed fielder.

Head Scout says: "Gunpowder is a likeable teammate."

BURLINGTON - BENCH / PART-TIME STARTERS

Image

2020 Salary: $510K

No stranger to splitting duties with another man, Giff holds down righty platoon spot with A_B at catcher. Last year he surprised at the plate, hitting well over .300 in April and May before falling back to earth later on. He has surprisingly above-average speed for a catcher and can also play second base adequately. Giff is widely admired in the clubhouse for his steadying presence.

Head Scout says: "Giff is born to be a captain of men."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.2M

The "Jewish Olmedo Saenz" saw a significant uptick in playing time due to bronto's struggles at 1B, and saw his numbers improve across the board from 2018. BFJ offers some pop off the bench from both sides of the plate, and can also catch in emergency situations.

Head Scout says: "BigFatJew is even tempered," unless of course he finds a cinnamon raisin bagel in the clubhouse.

Image

2020 Salary: $950K

Versatile glove man GoodKarma continue to fill in capably at the various infield spots during occasional starts, though his numbers fell off somewhat from the previous year. GoodKarma's great range and fundamentals allow him to fill in at any infield position, and is a fair hitter who'll occasionally knock an extra-base hit.

Head Scout says: "GoodKarma never shows any lack of effort."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.3M

Baloney again had trouble finding playing time last year but remains floating around the lower levels of the depth chart. Baloney can fill in adequately at all infield positions. He has a little pop in his bat and OK plate discipline, but probably won't be able to make consistent contact at the major league level.

Head Scout says: "Baloney is intelligent on and off the field."

Image

2020 Salary: $6.0M

Wacky clubhouse clown bapo! saw his playing time reduced after Nonlinear's arrival, but remains a versatile if unspectacular player off the bench. At the plate, bapo! is a decent singles-and-doubles hitter, but not too much of a power threat. His speed is just above average, but he is a savvy runner who can occasionally swipe a base. He is an adequate outfielder.

Head Scout says: "bapo! lacks drive and in slow to learn from experience."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.2M

Former minor league stud Rex was brought back to provide some bench depth, but put in a poor showing in limited play due to the Frogs' outfield logjam. Rex's quick bat gives him some decent pop, but he's yet to show he can make consistent contact in the majors. He is a fair corner outfielder and a cautious runner.

Head Scout says: "Rex has a questionable work ethic and is thick-headed."

BURLINGTON - STARTING ROTATION

Image

2020 Salary: $15.0M

Staff ace Sabo improved on a somewhat disappointing 2019 to be Burlington's first 20-game winner. An aggressive righty, Sabo mixes up a formidable arsenal topped by a quality curveball and slider. His one downside is his control, which though not terrible, occasionally gets away from him. His high stamina means we'll likely see another 200+ innings from him barring injury.

Head Scout says: "Sabo brings a level-headedness to the clubhouse."

Image

2020 Salary: $17.0M

Angry Charlie Sheen impersonator brian saw his numbers dip a little, but remained a solid complement to Sabo at the top of the rotation. brian's best pitches are his slider and fastball, but he can also mix in a changeup and forkball, throwing all consistently for strikes. He has solid control and is usually good at keeping the ball in the park.

Head Scout says: "brian has great knowledge of the game, but he has very little loyalty."

Image

2020 Salary: $945k

After a breakout 2018 season in which he won 17 games and made the All-Star team govmentchedda came careening back to earth as his ERA bloated nearly two runs and registered 18 losses. Fans eagerly await seeing which year was a fluke. chedda relies on his sinker and splitfinger to induce a high ratio of ground balls, though his home runs allowed ballooned from 5 to 17 last year.

Head Scout says: "govmentchedda is slow to catch on."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.6M (contract year)

Junkballer DSafetyGuy posted a fat ERA but again managed a winning record due to fortuitous run support and remains a durable presence at the back end of the rotation. DSafe's velocity barely scratches 90 MPH, but he has good movement on his sinker and changeup, as well as a decent curveball.

Head Scout says: "DSafetyGuy knows how to fit in."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.8M

TT2.0 gave the Sports Frogs another solid if unspectacular year as a back-rotation starter. A lanky, intimidating left-hander, TT mixes his upper-90's fastball with a good slider and recently developed a respectable changeup. His control is so-so and he sometimes loses movement, making him susceptible to gopher balls. He is an adept fielder and is good at holding runners.

Head Scout says: "Fuck Chad Burns."

BULLPEN

Image

2018 Salary: $2.0M

Cheese-cutting closer Shirley hung on to his role for another year, but a penchant for giving up dinky hits put the team through a few more tense moments than they would have liked. Shirley's arsenal is limited to two pitches, but those two—a superb slider and a fastball in the mid-90s—are enough for him to close out the majority of his save opportunities while racking up plenty of K's. He is occasionally haunted by his rather mediocre control.

Head Scout says: "Shirley has a knack for doing impersonations."

Image

2020 Salary: $800k

tennbengal graduated to the main setup role following L-Jam's trade, but showed a disappointing regression from his previous year. Time will tell if he can turn things around. bengal's game is built around his blistering cut fastball which brushes against 100 MPH, along with a good slider. He is dogged, though, by occasional control problems.

Head Scout says, "tennbengal lacks drive."

Image

2020 Salary: $850k

HaulCitgo put in another year of capable service as a long reliever and spot starter, though his ERA took a hit from previous seasons. Working with just borderline stuff, HaulCitgo knows his limitations and won't try to do more than he can. On the flip side, he doesn't get too many strikeouts and relies a little more on his teammates' fielding than the manager would like.

Head Scout says: "HaulCitgo is an extremely hard worker and is popular in the clubhouse."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.1M (Contract Year)

Canadian import travzilla arrived in Burlington to fill the LOOGY role and filled the job adequately. Among travzilla's pitches, only his slider is above-average, but he sometimes surprises hitters by challenging them when they least expect it.

Head Scout says: "travzilla is quiet and doesn't stand out in a crowd."

Image

2020 Salary: $510k

vandwagon was brought up from AAA early in the year to fill out a short-armed bullpen and settled comfortably in a middle relief role. His out pitch is a cut fastball that approaches 100 MPH, but the rest of his arsenal is limited and he'll need to improve his control if he wants to hold down a more substantial role.

Head Scout says: "vandwagon never shows any lack of effort."

HOLLAND - STARTING LINEUP

Image

2020 Salary: $8.7M

Switch-hitting backstop rass posted another solid season behind the plate for the Oats. While not a big power hitter, his smooth stroke and good batting eye make him a consistent contributor to the offense. He won't embarrass himself behind the plate, though his arm isn't the greatest.

Head Scout says: "rass enjoys playing the devil's advocate."

Image

2020 Salary: $510k

Rams Fanny didn't quite live up to his stellar 2018 showing in which he won Shrew Conference Rookie of the Year and the Oats' Team MVP, but remained a solid fixture at first last year. His fast bat and good eye should see him continue to hit for a high average, with power to the gaps and a fair share of HRs. Though spending most of his time at first, he has a strong enough arm to make an adequate catcher.

Head Scout says: "Managers love Rams Fanny. There's no quit in him."

Image

2020 Salary: $13.0M

Jerloma turned in another productive season in the upper part of Holland's batting order. J-Lo is an aggressive, slashing hitter with excellent bat control and good gap power. He has decent speed and is sure-handed, if not especially rangy, in the field.

Head Scout says: "Jerloma has great knowledge of the game."

Image

2020 Salary: $6.5M (contract year)

Classic good-field/no-hit shortstop sancarlos turned in a customary performance last year, offsetting his unremarkable offense with Gold Glove quality fielding. sancarlos is a spotty contact hitter without too much power, but where he really shines is in the field, with excellent hands, good range, and a solid arm. Despite his age, he has above-average speed, but is sometimes prone to baserunning errors.

Head Scout (still) says: "sancarlos is unmotivated."

Image

2020 Salary: $7.9M

P.D.X. followed up his promising 2018 showing with a breakout season last year, leading the Oats in most major offensive categories and being voted Team MVP. P.D.X. uses his lightning-quick bat to slash hits to all fields, and his sprinter's speed to milk extra bases. Last year saw him boost his power hitting as well, jumping from 10 homers to 29. In the field, he is a fair third baseman with a good arm, who can also catch in a pinch. The only real flaw in his game remains his below-average walk rate, meaning he is actually a bad player according to nerds on the internet.

Head Scout says: "P.D.X. knows how to put on the charm."

Image

2020 Salary: $4.4M

Mister D held down the regular left field job for the Oats last year, turning in a capable if unspectacular performance. Mister D is about an average all-around hitter, with a good batting eye and occasional pop. While not fast, he is a competent outfielder and has a very good throwing arm.

Head Scout says: "Mister D is unthinking."

Image

2020 Salary: $14.8M (contract year)

BSF21 continued to established himself as one of the league's better leadoff hitters, building on a breakout 2018 by improving his walk rate and seeing a Brady Anderson-esque surge in power. He again finished near the top of the leaderboards in steals while maintaining a highly efficient success rate. His great speed makes him a rangy outfielder, and his arm is more than adequate in center.

Head Scout says: "There is nothing ever uncommon about BSF21."

Image

2020 Salary: $6.0M

duff turned in a near-replica of his strong 2018 season, again providing the Oats with a solid anchor in the middle of the lineaup. The native Hoosier is a strong, aggressive hitter with good power to all fields, as well the discipline to draw a good share of walks. He is a solid outfielder with a strong arm, though prone to the occasional bone-headed error.

Head Scout says: "duff has a good head on his shoulders."

HOLLAND - BENCH / PART-TIME STARTERS

Image

2020 Salary: $750k

The Sybian had a so-so season providing the Oats with depth at 1B and the corner outfield spots. He is surprisingly nimble around the bag at first and can back up the corner outfield positions in a pinch, though his arm is only slightly stronger than a noodle.

Head Scout says: "The Sybian is always up for a good game of cards with teammates."

Image

2020 Salary: $510k

A dual citizen of Colombia and New Jersey, elflaco gives the Oats depth at the middle infield positions. A fair hitter with occasional power, flaco's downfall is his tendency to chase high pitches out of the zone. With above-average speed and outstanding instincts, he makes an ideal pinch runner. He is an adequate fielder, though with a somewhat weak arm.

Head Scout says: "elflaco keeps his nose clean."

Image

2020 Salary: $750k

Square Rob
is a classic "jack of all trades, master of none" who can play just about anywhere, if not at an especially high level. Nonetheless, his versatility makes him a useful asset. He has a reputation as a tough out, though his performance at the plate last year was anemic at best. On the bases his speed is average, though he has a curious knack for making terrible decisions. His relatively strong arm makes third his best position.

Head Scout says: "Square Rob likes to do crossword puzzles in his spare time."

Image

2020 Salary: $750k (contract year)

Likeable minor league vet cerrano looks for another opportunity to carve out a role for himself after splitting time last year time between AAA and a handful of appearances at the major-league level. He is a so-so all-around hitter, though he does have a notable knack for drawing walks. His decent full-stride speed is undermined by a slow first step.

Head Scout says: "cerrano has good leadership skills."

Image

2020 Salary: $750k

Like cerrano, DaveInSeattle struggled to find playing time for the big club in 2019, but may have another shot this year as the Oats seek to shore up the back end of the bench. Dave holds his own at the plate enough to see regular pinch-hitting duty. He can field the corner outfield spots adequately and is a fair runner.

Head Scout says: "DaveinSeattle is too cocksure for his own good."

HOLLAND - STARTING ROTATION

Image

2020 Salary: $10.5M

degenerasian's 2019 marked a disappointing regression from a fine 2018 campaign, with across-the-board jumps in ERA, hits, walks, and home runs allowed. Not overpowering, degen uses his low-to-mid-90s fastball to set up a strong changeup and slider. He continues to be plagued by occasional early exits due to minor injuries. Oats fans are banking on degen returning his earlier promise of a legit staff ace.

Head Scout says: "degenerasian has great knowledge of the game."

Image

2020 Salary: $8.9M (contract year)

Rush2112 saw his ERA jump over a run from 2018, but remained a top-notch workhorse and logged a team-leading 18 wins last year. He was rewarded with another handsome salary bump in arbitration heading into a contract year. Rush boasts a mid-90s fastball, with a good curveball and changeup, though his movement leaves a little to be desired.

Head Scout says: "What you say about his company is what you say about society."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.7M (Contract Year)

After a long run as a solid performer, "Doc" howard saw the shine come off last year, with a monstrous ERA and a league-leading number of hits allowed. The Oats are hoping he can be able to muster a return to form as a crafty veteran. When on his game, the Doctor is an extreme groundball pitcher, relying on a mix of sinkers, forkballs, and sliders to bait hitters into banging balls into the dirt, though he'll rack up his fair share of K's as well.

Head Scout says: "howard is known for his sense of humor."

Image

2020 Salary: $2.3M

Moreta stormed out of the gate last year to a 14-3 record before coming back to Earth later on. Nonetheless, her overall strong showing gives the Oats increased confidence in their rotation's depth heading into the new year. Moreta's limited but potent arsenal features a blistering fastball that nears 100 MPH, along with a solid splitfinger as a change of pace. She recently added a slider in the hopes of building on last year's performance.

Head Scout says: "Moreta is seen as a leader in the clubhouse."

Image

2020 Salary: $510k

blundercrush continued to be a feast-or-famine performer in the rotation, bouncing back and forth between some very good outings and some ugly ones. Still, a team could do a lot worse in a fifth starter. blundercrush's fastball tops out in the low 90's, so his success relies on an array of breaking and offspeed pitches along with good control.

Head Scout says: "blundercrush either internalizes or is just impersonal."

BULLPEN

Image

2020 Salary: $2.8M[/b]

After a shaky performance in 2018, Johnnie pulled things together last year to live up to his promise as a closer. In particular, he managed to cut back on giving up the dinky hits that plagued him two years ago. Oats fans are hopeful he can maintain that consistency going forward. Not overpowering, Johnnie's game revolves around using his changeup and sinker to induce more ground balls than a pair of sandpaper boxer shorts.

Head Scout says, "Johnnie puts in long hours."

2020 Salary: $7.0M

Image

L-Jam arrived in an early-season trade after Johnnie's early struggles, and though he didn't quite manage to steal the closer spot, performed capably in shoring up the Oats' bullpen. L-Jam has good velocity and and movement on his fastball, slider, and change. He is an iron man who almost never encounters injury problems.

Head Scout says: "L-Jam puts in long hours."

Image

2020 Salary: $1.2M (Contract Year)

Hardy veteran steve rebounded from an ugly 2018 campaign to put in solid work last year, and could sneak back into the rotation if someone on the back end falters. steve keeps hitters on their toes with a sneaky delivery and an expansive arsenal of pitches, topped by a fastball that still hits the mid-90s. He's one of the best in the business at laying down a sac bunt.

Head Scout says: "steve is Mr. Hustle."

Image

2020 Salary: $900k

teeteebee saw his role in the bullpen reduced after L-Jam's arrival, but remains in the mix to provide some additional depth. He has a good arsenal of cut fastball, slider, and change. His stuff and movement are solid, but he sometimes struggles with command.

Head Scout says: "teeteebee walks the talk."

Image

2020 Salary: $510k

Tom 1860 brings another capable arm to the middle of the bullpen. Tom has good command of superior if raw stuff, using his animated delivery to challenge hitters with his cut fastball and sweeping breaking ball. He possesses the stamina to be a potential starter, though it would likely be best for him to expand his repertoire first.

Head Scout says: "Tom 1860 is involved with the local animal shelter."

Image

2020 Salary: $510k

Lefty specialist TheHumanComa drew from his experience of Quebec bar fights to prepare himself for the trials and tribulations of being a middle reliever. THC uses a cutter-and-curve combo and good control to garner a decent amount of strikeouts, though his pitches sometimes have a tendency to flatten out and leave him susceptible to serving up HRs.

Head Scout says: "TheHumanComa is slow to learn from experience."

The computer-controlled teams are a lot more diverse than you guys. The two Swamp teams are basically the 1950s Red Sox of the league.

Yes. Excellent. Those 1987(?) Topps cards had to be the height of the baseball card craze. Just tons of them in the parents house.

APRIL UPDATE

Alright, after simming through April, we're now caught up to roughly where the real-life season would be. Here's how things played out. Should be back to a weekly update starting this week.

Image Burlington Sports Frogs
The Sports Frogs got off to an excellent start with a 14-7 record in April, putting them at the top of the division.

- April: 14-7 (1st in Div)
- League Power Ranking: 1st

Image Holland Oats
The Oats stumbled out of the gate to a 1-5 start, but rebounded to finish April with a 10-10 record, just a game and a half back of the division lead.

- April: 10-10 (4th in Div, 1.5 GB)
- League Power Ranking: 15th

WHO'S HOT?
  • Gunpowder (.410, 10 HR, 31 RBI, April Player of the Month for the Bensell Conference)
  • Pruitt (.395, 6 HR, 20 RBI)
  • Brian (4-0, 3.03 ERA)
  • Rush (3-1, 2.27 ERA)
  • P.D.X. (.338, .880 OPS, 5 SB)
  • BSF21 (.361, .973 OPS, 6 SB)
  • Johnnie (0.00 ERA, 5-for-5 Saves)
  • Your Mom
WHO'S NOT?
  • Ryan (.186, .543 OPS)
  • rass (.175, .531 OPS)
  • It's not his fault, but degenerasian started out 1-4 despite a solid 3.15 ERA. Get him some run support, you slackers!

Maybe carwash is just reminding Holland that they should worry more about Ws and Ls right now than stats. That is some top notch GM leadership if you ask me.

I think the batting sheets should be sorted by HRs or isoP.
