Swamp Jeopardy Championship via Zoom

Post by A_B »

Looks like there is a way to set up jeopardy games online and then you can use Zoom to play it. Likely using the chat function to "buzz" in.

I'd love to pit Ryan/Ljam/Pruitt/ against one another for Swamp GOAT title, but not sure if they all would be able to make it work. Was Diamond on Jeapordy too, or just Millionaire?

Alternately, we could do a few games with people that wanted to play and have our own tournament of champions. I can see that it might be a fair amount of work, but we might could do some crowdsourcing from people and just not use their category in their game or people that just want to submit a category and not even play could do that. Could probably reap some from the J-archive as well.

What say youins? Any interest?

(One note: I don't have an actual Zoom account with the ability to host over 40 minutes so I may need someone to help set up the games and then let me host. Obviously, we could have spectators, too, in the room.)

I'll probably do a test run with not GOATS to work out the kinks. If you'd be interested in that let me know here. I won't say it is first come first-serve because that will depend on date/time probably.

OK, that's awesome. Do you know if you have to be hosting in order to record? I know I can share my screen but I suppose people would want to be able to watch this on replay later.

I have a test game board ready to go. It's just one round at the moment, but future games will be two and it looks like I may have to manufacture a final jeopardy, but I can do that.

I can't do tonight, but could probably do tomorrow or move until next week.

I did for these rounds but if it gets to the point where we want to do it regularly yeah I'd welcome the help.

I have tried to do some of the jeopardy tricks such as letters that have to be used/recurring categories, etc. It's kinda fun to think up the wordplays!

If you want to see how it works, here are two examples that the old deadspin crew created (I got the idea from a Magary article).

https://jeopardylabs.com/play/double-sports-jeopardy-2

https://jeopardylabs.com/play/2020-04-05-378

My plan is that I will have the link to the game at first and then share my screen. There doesn't seem to be a way to designate a Daily Double, so before the game I will do a random number generator to place the daily double and use a post it on my screen so that I can't forget it. I can then manually adjust the score based on wagers in the scoring spots.

I have also figured out how to do final jeopardy as well in a new browser window. For final jeopardy, contestants will have to text/pm/email me their wagers prior to the question. Once I have all the wagers I will revel the question and read it. You will also need to send me a text/pm/email with your answer to ensure no one changes their answer, even though I trust you guys. I'd hate for someone to have answered the same thing as the first person, the first person ended up being wrong and someone try to change it. This will take a bit longer than usual, but will ensure integrity. You can hold up a piece of paper with your answer written on it to show people or simply say it out loud.

As for buzzing, not sure, but I am thinking that using the chat feature will be best and after reading the questions I will enter "GO" or something in the chat and the contestants will have to enter some letter or something in and hit enter and the first one after my message will get first crack. Again, this will take a bit longer, but at least we won't have commercial breaks unless GPJ comes up with something clever.

I believe the host has to be the one to record. I can try making you an additional host.

ETA I probably still have to be on because the recording will be stored on my system. Since the recording will need to be uploaded or transferred I should be able to do it through Google Docs.

If it has to be the pro version of Zoom because of the time limit, then it can go right to the cloud with a shareable link

Based on last night, I think whoever has host control can record, no matter who started the meeting.

Obviously this didn't happen last night. However, I do have access to zoom so that should make it a bit easier to run this bad boy.

I don't know how TT's return to work affects this, but as of now I still have him, Chedda and BSF slated to play the test game.

I'd like to shoot for either this Thursday or Mon/Tues next week. Let me know what days work best. TT, let me know your availability so we can find a replacement. I imagine your work occurs in the evening, but like I said the spot is yours if you can make it.

My schedule is more open the later in the evening we do this. I generally put the little one down each night. A 9:30 EDT start is probably perfect, although I could maybe move that up a little. If there are others that can get on at a better time for you, AB, feel free to grab them.
