He fell off a balcony after some railing gave way. We were all out there after having an awesome brunch talking about sending a pic of our bellies to his granddaughter who sent a 30-week pregnancy pic last night. I’m smiling at him and next thing I know he’s fallen back and down. I somehow had the wherewithal to grab my phone and call 911, paramedics were there in 5 minutes. We thought luckily the worst was a severely broken ankle, but he went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

I will never have that image out of my head. Permanently scarred.

I didn’t realize until last night that his other granddaughter that was there didn’t see it either. So luckily only 7 of us replaying that image over and over and over.

All the granddaughters were his “Goobers” until a certain age.

Our youngest is four and doesn’t really grasp what’s happening. Harper is doing OK. I lost a grandparent at that same exact age so I can remember what it was like to go between tears and like everything is normal. She is feeling real grief at a loss of a human she was very close to for the first time and she doesn’t understand some of her physical feelings like feeling sick at her stomach.

My in-laws came and got them so Kelli and I could grieve a bit alone and help out with whatever we need to do.
