It's good that the Mississippi flag is changing. But don't they really need to change the Mascot at Ole Miss as well? I know they've moved away from the Rebel imagery, but if ever there was a time for the Landsharks.

This takes some beating

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/202 ... percollins

On Thursday, Starkey told the rightwing commentator Darren Grimes that “slavery was not genocide, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many damn blacks in Africa or in Britain would there? You know, an awful lot of them survived.”

Add Rupp Arena to the list of venues (which includes CMU's Kelly/Shorts Stadium) that might be soon getting a name change.

I'm sure Kentucky fans are handling the suggestion with grace.

So at least one senator thinks it makes good political sense to argue against a project designed to raise awareness of slavery.

I have said it before to you guys, but I have been called cynical for my entire life. The fact that I am getting daily getting depressed by shit that is going on shows me that I have not been cynical enough.

Maybe I need a news hiatus?

This sort of shit makes me wish I’d done some sort of annual “People I Wish Would Die” list that I could refer back to. Like a time capsule of sorts, but better.

There was a little kick back at that last year when it was announced. Overall I haven't heard much uproar, but I was not very online this weekend so I can't say for sure. I don't really care either way. I get why some would want it changed and I get the traditionalists viewpoint. But I suppose if it actively offends a proportion of the population, it should be changed.

AB, you're not a typical UK fan by any means. I don't need to check a Kentucky message board to know what's being said there about this. But I did anyway, and it's exactly what I expected. To be fair, I'm pretty sure you'd see the same responses (more or less) at any school's message board site if a similar issue came up.

I don't really see a problem with the flag one (beyond the normal revulsion I have on seeing the flag used as a prop, but that's hardly unusual or outside of the norm unfortunately).

The China one is definitely problematic.

As silly as it is, isn’t this a bit woke extreme? Is the local ninja community incensed? My granddad was a ninja and...

Is it the appropriation of martial arts? It’s stupid. It’s confusing (why COVID ninjas?) But I gotta stretch for racist.

Also it is Canadian as hell to have a disclaimer on an ad that indicates they’re not trying to steal any clients already under contract.

The complaints are that that ninjas are racist as well as the Asian font. Plus Covid, the China virus.

A silly law to be sure. Kind of like when online casinos say they aren't betting sites.

As always, local media found some anguished folks to claim that this is stereotyping and cultural apporpriation.

I just thought white people doing cringe shit was the issue with the photo, not that it was cultural appropriation to use the word "ninja" and a particular type of font.

Now excuse me while I go play karate in the garage with my step brother.

Here's is the problem today. Yeah it's a bad idea and if one of you guys thought of it, what would you do in this situation? You can't just say sorry, it was a silly, stupid cringe idea. That's not good enough. You have to do a total hari-kari and apologize and have self-reflection.
Realtor Michael Majeski, who is featured on the billboard, said that he was surprised to read the responses to his advertisements but that, looking back, he sees “a lot of validity in what people are saying.”

“I am learning to unlearn a lot of my white privilege so that I can best support our diverse community,” he said in a statement. “I not only apologize for the insensitivities of our billboard ad, and have already worked to have it removed immediately; I am also apologizing to anyone who felt belittled by our insensitive message. It will not happen again.”
and the company
Re/Max Integra said in a statement that they were not aware of the billboard prior to it being erected.

“The messaging in the advertisement directly conflicts with our values and belief in equality, inclusiveness and access to homeownership for all. As part of a global franchise brand, our next step will be to alert the franchise owner with whom these agents work to address this as soon as possible,” the company said.
Everyone's really really scared to be called racist, even if it's not.

I will not perform a hari-kari because it would be insensitive to appropriate Japanese suicide culture.

But let's be serious.

Who am I apologizing to? The white people angry on behalf of ninjas?

Ever notice that forced apologies are for the people mad on behalf of and never to the group of people that have supposedly been insulted.

Are you insulted by this? Do YOU want them to apologize? If you're offended, I get it. It would be a bit of a stretch, but I can understand using Asian heritage might be a sour way to sell homes during a pandemic.

But look at the nuance. Ninjas, fonts. Not "slanting your eyes" and saying something derogatory alluding to the virus.

Yeah, I teach racial sensitivity training, and I just saw this as really lame and embarrassingly stupid, but didn't jump to racist. I did laugh and think appropriation, but didn't think people would actually call it out for that. It's just horrible local marketing, lighten up people!

Do you teach sensitivity training for a company? I think the training is great and teaches people different points of views that help in the workplace. However, the problem I find is that the executives take it a few steps too far. They always take the side of the aggrieved if there is someone who is offended, no matter how small, no matter how nuanced. They simply have the canned statement like above, "blah blah blah conflicts with the values of our inclusive and diverse organization." If a guy's been working for you 10 years, he's not racist or you would have known already. He just said something that offended one person and he can simply apologize for it and move on.
