So I was just sitting here thinking about how weird it is to even consider having a confederate flag of any kind, let alone display it proudly.

Then I saw something about the General Lee and the Dukes of Hazzard. Then I remembered I loved that show growing up. Then I remembered I found a whole bunch of my old toys that my mom had kept when we cleaned out her house. Then I thought about where it was . Then I remembered.

I've been displaying it in my fucking office for about seven years now. On one hand, it's a piece of my childhood and I certainly didn't think of the flag as being some link to my southern heritage (Of which I likely have little) but just the cool Dodge Charger that Bo and Luke drove. ON the other hand, I shouldn't be displaying it. Anyway, I took it off the shelf and will put it in a box at home for my children to discover someday. Maybe I should put a note in there with it.

Just paint over the flag. Didn't Bubba Watson do that to the original car?

Damn, I need to dig up my matchbox cars, I know I had the General Lee. I found my Matchbox City when packing to move, forgot my mom brought it when my son was born. Now he is too old for it. Opportunity missed... If nothing else, the protests rooted out AB's closeted soft racism.

I think a lot of us watched that show and didn't think twice about the Confederate flag. We're the perfect generation to kind of embody coming of age and then having to rewire our brains... some of us more than other, but a few examples:

* I used to say things were "gay" when my intention was to say it was stupid or wrong.
* I used the word "retarded" CONSTANTLY when it is (correctly) now not allowable
* I had little understanding of the pain inflicted by the Confederate flag, and of the glorification of the south until pretty deep into my 20s. Shit, my grandmother that lived in the South was pretty racist, looking back in hindsight. She was the sweetest woman in the world, but some of her jokes were pretty fucked up. She bought me the Brer Rabbit book and I had no idea what was really going on there.

I know we were kidding with AB, but it's pretty remarkable to look back on our collective experiences and see how much we've changed.

I have an Aunt (not the crazy Facebook one) who was from Alabama, and she HATED Dukes of Hazzard. She said 'It makes all of us in the South look stupid'.

No kidding...I remember playing 'Smear the Queer' during grade school. And I played Ultimate sometimes in the early 90's who ran an offense they called 'Roach the f*g' (which consisted of looking at which defender was the most gassed, and then focusing on him the entire time).

I almost skimmed over the facebook post today, thought it was an Onion story.

Lady Antebellum is changing it's name to Lady A.

Cool, I guess?

Except they probably should have checked with the soul singer, Lady A, first.

In what world does it make sense to even mutter that kind of racist shit under your breath, let alone in a situation where someone can document those thoughts?

Unreal.

When you are Ukrainian and have absolutely no clue? What is amazing is the US Junior program connection; which he has coached. I have read a bunch of articles about diversity in that sport in the U.S. In my head I feel like most of the articles I have read are about top notch fencers being developed are from New York City programs and not all white rich kids.

My company just announced we are closed on Friday to celebrate Juneteenth. These BLM protests are really moving the needle. I feel like this success has to be in part due to people being pent up in quarantine for 3 months. A combination of people sitting stuck inside and scared, a lack of distractions to focus on (sports, live TV programming, no kids activities...) has really made an impact. I mean, these issues aren't new, we have seen protests throughout the years that haven't gained traction, and now I think we will actually see some change. Most important, we are seeing a backlash against people who deny a problem exists. Hell, the NFL said they are going to allow players to take a knee during the anthem, and US Soccer admitted they were wrong to prohibit taking a knee.

June needs a legit federal holiday. Flag day doesn't cut it for me.

Juneteenth would fix that.

Well, if they've never listed it before...

I think a lot of white folks might be hearing of it for the first time, now.

Back when I was 26 I moved to Texas to take a job. As part of the job, I supervised a group of data entry clerks, about half of whom were African-American. In early June, a couple employees asked me if they were getting the day off for Juneteenth. I replied that I'd never heard of Juneteenth and they had to explain to me what it was. After that, I told them it wasn't an official company holiday, but since I knew it was important to at least a couple of them, I said that if they wanted to take it off, I wouldn't dock them a sick day. IIRC, about half the Blacks and about half the Whites/Hispanics took the day off.

To be fair, I didn't hear about it until I was 18 or so because I worked with an African-American dude from Dallas at my first base. He was taking leave and driving back to see his family that week.

That was really nice of you to do that. It really should be a holiday.

In Canada, June 21 is National Indigenous Day and it is listed on calendars but not a federal holiday. Last year, Trudeau changed it to this new name from National Aboriginal Day but stopped short of making it a National Holiday. I don't know if it's made American news at all but two Indigenous people were shot and killed by police in New Brunswick over the last two weeks, and footage of a Indigenous Chief in Alberta being tackled by police for a license plate infraction. So there's mounting pressure here in Canada of the Mounties!

Canada's treatment of their Indigenous people is almost as bad as America's of theirs, which is really saying something, especially relativistically compared to just about anything else in the two countries relatively parallel histories.

I couldn't have told you what Juneteenth was until a couple of weeks ago. I'd heard the name, but didn't know what day it was or what it celebrated. It sounds like it's been big in Texas for a while, but not that many other places. Obviously, I'm very white.

I’m telling you, two federal holidays in the space of 15 days in mid-summer and we are never looking back. I used to think that a European style all-summer vacation was impossible. Now I’m looking to book Ibiza for the entirety of July and August.

Other than some Edmonton football fans? I guess the Edmonton Eskimos are the Canadian equivalent to the Washington Redskins.
