Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
First off, if you have not joined yet (and are not in PA or NJ) and want to join - join!!
Go to PokerStars and join Club 3555591 with password or code of PokerFrog!
As for the 12 who have already joined - that's a great number for a tournament. Ideally all 12 can play and we can do two tables of six. Even more ideally we could get some more people to join the club and we have some room for folks that can't play on any given selected date...
If we want to play for money could do $10 buy-ins to start (or $20 if people want) and pay out maybe two places if $10 buy-ins or three places if $20 buy-ins. We can figure that out later.
But the main thing first is...finding a date that works for 12 of us.
I am thinking 9:30 est would be a good starting time to accommodate the west coast folks and not be too late for the eastern time zone people?
I'm not doing a poll - let's try it via replies to this thread.
Option 1: Can people play a tournament this Sunday evening (May 31) at 9:30 pm est?
Option 2: Can people play a tournament this upcoming Monday evening (June 1) at 9:30 pm est?
Option 3: Can people play a tournament this upcoming Tuesday evening (June 2) at 9:30 pm est?
If you are in the Sportsfrog club on PokerStars or plan to be and want to play, simply respond with
Yes
No
Yes
or whichever answer combo applies and I will try and find the one that works for everyone (or as close to everyone as I can)...

That's seven (7) YES so far for Sunday night - for the five who have not weighed in yet - really hoping for that date to work for you all...

On a side note, there was some chatter in the other thread about getting chips. Is that necessary for this style home game set-up? If so, can someone please provide a step-by-step explanation of doing so for this guy who created an account for Swamp poker? It need not be in this thread, the other one is fine. Just thought for visibility, this thread was better.

Yeah I've loaded up on some free chips in the past few days when i think to log in at home. Not sure if bengal can set the amount it uses or if it is a default.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 2:56 pm Yes

When you log in there's a "free chips" button in the top right corner(ish) and you can get 15,000 play chips every four hours.

Re: Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
That's 11 - I think that's enough to set it and hope that the 12th can make it.
I believe the default setting from PokerStars is 20,000 of its chips to enter a tournament - you should have gotten at least that much when you signed up.
And if anyone else hasn't asked in yet, register and jump in. The more the better.

If you login every so often (at least four hours apart) and click on the "add chips" button you get 15,000 free each time.

Re: Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
I've set up the tournament. Head to the Club and register for it, when you all get a chance. The least amount of PokerStar chips that you can select is 20,000 so that's what I picked.
We also need to discuss if we are doing a real money buy-in and who is willing to hold the money and payout if so.
My suggestion - if we do $10 buy-ins we pay top 2 finishers. If we do $20 buy-ins we pay to three places.

When you sign up you automatically get 35k in chips. You can immediately add another 15k with the "Add Chips" button. After that, you can only add 15k chips every 4 hours.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 2:56 pm Yes

Home game buy-ins are 20k, so you don't really *need* to add more, but if the tournament is set up with rebuys allowed, then it's good to have those additional chips.
Also good to have more chips if we play more in the future.

This tourney is no rebuys - we each start with a 5000 chip stack. 10 minute levels.

Ok, thanks for setting it up, Bengal. I know that online poker is old hat for a lot of you. I've played a lot of friendly poker, but never online. Never had an account until now. So, any helpful primer information would be appreciated.

First tip: it's fast
You should play with some games or tourneys with the fake money to get used to the speed and buttons.

One time around the table and you will be good. Not a ton of time to make decisions but enough. There's a chat feature which will be fun for this group since we all know each other.
Re: Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
My group has also had success running a Zoom call during the game. The chat function I find is largely useless with the speed of the game.tennbengal wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 6:48 pmOne time around the table and you will be good. Whoever is setting it up, can we put it on the slowest setting possible? Some of these I've played are just at warp speed.

Re: Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
Also another .02, I'd prefer we have an escrow to hold money or just agree to pay the winner our buy in as opposed to giving poker stars my CC info and playing for "real money" while they get a cut.

100 percent we should handle this internally.

Yeah that's the intent. I don't even think anyone could do actual cash transactions on the site (except for maybe Brian and Canadians).

At NO point will PokerStars hold any money. We will do PayPal or Venmo to one person to hold and payout.

Re: Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
Instead of having many transactions back and forth why dont we keep a google spreadsheet. We can track it over multiple tournaments. I can do that.
Say the buy-in is always $20. Once you lose 3 times and reach -60, you must pay someone who is in the positive. And it just cycles forever.

Right. Just simply PayPal or Venmo for each tourney and each pays out. This isn’t rocket science, no need to complicate it.

$10 or $20? Also who is holding the $. Will play banker if nobody volunteers
Re: Let's make a date! (For poker): The thread
Shouldn't need a banker. Everyone can just Venmo or otherwise digitally send cash to the winner.

It’s not winner take all - gonna pay to 2 or 3 places. Easier if someone collects and then distributes.
