Swamp Quarantine Movie Night - Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls , Thursday, June 4, 9 PM ET

Post by brian »

Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (1970)
Director: Russ Meyer
Screenwriters: Russ Meyer and Roger Ebert (yes, that Roger Ebert)
Starring: Dolly Read, Cynthia Myers
Running Time: 109 minutes
Budget: $900,000
Box Office: $40 million
Streaming availability: Appears to be none
On-demand/PPV: $2.99/$3.99 on cable and satellite services
Other availability: Checking
Start Time: 9 p.m. (movie starts at 9:10 p.m.)

This one honestly doesn't fit the template for most of the movies we've done, but I'm gonna do a hard sell on you guys and insist you consider watching this with us if any of the following are true:

1) You've never seen a Russ Meyer movie.
2) You're a Roger Ebert fan.
3) You like boobs.

This one has to be seen to be believed.

I recommend many intoxicants to heighten the experience.

Yes, this is a good point as well. Show up high or buzzed or be ready to get there as soon as possible.

ETA: For what it's worth the movie can be enjoyed sober, but it's a trip (literally and figuratively), so don't be afraid to indulge in your favorite intoxicant either though.

I saw it as a second feature at a drive-in when I was a teenager. Don't remember much of it. Is it youtube available?

Haven't posted much recently beyond the OOTP stuff, but will join this one. Saw bits and pieces decades ago but would be a mostly new experience for me.

Do we need to point out that this is NOT the movie called Valley of the Dolls, but specifically Beyond the Valley of the Dolls? That might mess some people up.

Yeah good point, especially after TB's post (no offense) but yes. we are watching BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, which is an authorized sequel to Valley of the Dolls and in some ways a parody of it.

DirecTV offers the movie, but only as a purchase and not a rental. Gotta imagine that's like Spectravision.

The first thing I'll say that's not a spoiler is that the 20th Century Fox anthem during the logo is called back at the climax of the movie. It's arguably the most iconic scene in the movie, so keep that in back of mind.

Yeah, I got it from YouTube. I was checking DirecTV earlier today because I was figuring on trying to watch in our bedroom as opposed to the family room. Of course, the only way to get farther from our wi-fi than our bedroom is by being on the roof above our bedroom, so... family room and hoping our five-year-old's post-lights-out cameo that just ended is his only one.

My phone repeatedly shitting itself when I was trying to search for it on YouTube (I know it was there) was not helping, though.

It was progressive as shit to have multiple black and gay characters in a widely released movie in 1970.
