Redskins to retire team name Monday; new name to be revealed later
The Washington Redskins plan to announce Monday morning that they will change their team name, three people with knowledge of the situation confirmed Sunday night. The team is not expected to reveal a new name until a later date.

That way the previous name could just be referred to as the Before Pigskins, or if you want to shorten it

Name change to Code Talkers/Code Breakers confirmed.

(And it would also honor women at the same time.)

Maybe it's me, but why would any group like that want their name associated with a stupid football team? You become something else to the vast majority of Americans and I think it's reductive.

They should be forced to be something generic like Bulldogs or something ridiculous like Xpress.

So basically they are changing the name in an effort to detract attention away from a legal/PR shitstorm?

Well, don't forget the money angle, too.

I think, to sum it up, it's in no way from the theoretical goodness of Dan Snyder's heart.

Or they wanted to keep the name but knew this was coming and therefore knew making another stand on the name at this time would not only be a losing proposition but make the about to break shitstorm worse?

I do sort of wish they had hunkered down again and gotten the Trumps to pose in R*edsk*ins gear before this broke.

Possibly one of the least surprising MeToo stories to emerge.

Honestly, Dan Snyder is the worst owner in the history of ever.

I wonder if some of these big corporations were hip to this news and that's why they finally said enough is enough.

This would actually make for either a solid bracket challenge or a straight up draft. Marge Schott, Donald Sterling...

This might sound like snark, but in all honesty, it isn't ...

Can a mod change the name of this thread? Because I am getting uncomfortable every time I see it, and I imagine others might be also.

(Maybe this is just an excess of white guilt from the fact that I've spent much of the last two years fighting against the local Tribe on a massive land claim matter.)

This rumor has been running since last week. Nobody could put their finger on the details. It was like this I know something but won't tell you and its bad type thing. And we still don't actually have the article and many of the usual reporters aren't giving details. But ESPN picked up on the team hiring a lawyer to look at policy and conduct.

Also I love the the chatter coming about this only coming up because they see Snyder as weak right now and can potentially force him out. So you get the Bezos (HQ2 in the DC Area) wants a team. You get the Fred Smith FedEx missing out last time on the team, so he forces the name change by pulling support and maybe Snyder having cash flow challenges and only 60% ownership.

Snyder is a shitty businessman. Apparently his early fortunes were made on pretty shady communications/marketing schemes. He buys the Redskins and while it's still worth a gazillion dollars, he has consistently drawn down the fan base over the years and completely alienated season ticket holders. The myth of the waiting list being completely exposed many years ago.

Dude bought a controlling interest in Six Flags, puts his ESPN buddy Shapiro in charge of day-to-day and then has to file Chapter 11 a few years later.

He sucks so hard.

He says he's heard that Snyder is going to have the team taken away from him ala Donald Sterling.
