Suburbs

Post by A_B »

Saw some of the talk about how the suburbs were going to be destroyed. Realize that I now live in an area that is much more integrated than anywhere I've ever lived in Lexington. This is a decent neighborhood, 3-4 bed, 2.5 bath averages. Most houses in the 2400+ square foot range up to about 3300. Prices in the high 200k to mid 300k range.

My House is X.

1- Young white couple with 2 kids
2- Old retired white couple
3- Young couple, mixed white/Israeli with 2 kids
4 - Middle aged mixed black/hispanic couple with 1 kid
5 - Young white couple with one kid
6 - Arab family (I may be wrong, but all the ladies wear Burqas) with 3 kids (House is for sale, though)
7 - Older white couple
8 - Mixed White/Hispanic with one kid
9 - Black couple with 2 kids
10 - Single older white lady
11 - Hispanic lady, no kids or partner that I can tell
12 - White couple with grown children
13 - Young single white lady
14 - Chinese couple with one kid, wife's parents live with them
15 - Middle aged single white lady
16 - Mixed middle aged Black and White couple no kids

So of the 16 houses within eyeshot of my house, 8 of them have some sort of diversity. That's pretty good for Lexington suburbs based on my past experience.

Trump made some comments about Biden in office would destroy suburbs as we know it. Which of course is code for "they won't be lily white " anymore.

Hey guys, dangerous stuff in my neighborhood.

From NextDoor:

"Suspicious Men. My husband noticed 2 men sitting down the street from our house in a mid 2000s green Chevrolet Silverado at around 5:30pm. He went outside and noticed them again around 7:30pm walking around and taking pictures of houses in the dark. The police were notified. Has anyone else noticed these men?

Person 1
Hair: Dark, covid masks
Top: High visibility vest, hoodie

Vehicle 1
Color: Green
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Silverado
Year: Mid 2000s
Type: Truck

"covid masks"

Are we at the point (even in the holler) where not wearing a mask would make someone more suspicious?

Long story short, drunk/high dude slammed into a parked car about 7 last night. at one point tried to drive off but myself and another person (Who actually saw the whole thing and was first to call it in) had to ask him to not do that and complicate things. Guys also started to act like he was gonna run at one point on foot, but the first witness was in his army fatigues and looked at him and said "I can run pretty fast, I don't think you wanna try that." Guys said "yeah you're right" and just sat on his trunk.

Anyway, cops come and after a while end up cuffing him. I don't think he was drunk, but he was on something and I think he was also trying to hide something in the back seat before the cops came. (ETA: Blew a .079, which is below the limit but was over an hour since his last drink when they did test so maybe they can extrapolate)

The hit vehicle had been parked since march because it belonged to a friend of a person who was living there and he flew back to Texas because all off his classes were moved online and he hasn't been back since. The lady whose friend's car it was lives with her grandparents while she is going to school and grandpa came out just yelling about the guy being drunk to the point that I was one ace of telling him HE wasn't making things any better but then the cops arrived so I didn't have to get into it with a neighbor.

The guy looked like he felt really bad, and I think as the police were talking to him they found a warrant for the guy.

I can't imagine chasing someone for hitting a car. Not that he'd be wrong or anything, but that's way into "not enough of my problem" territory.

If you have the guys license plate... No way in Hell am I chasing after somebody. Not for a hit and run situation. Insurance will take care of that for the "victim" and who fucking knows what the perp is capable of...

Many years ago, myself and another person had to take the keys from a woman that was swerving all over and run up on someone's lawn. I was behind her, monitoring and on the ph with police, other guy was coming the other direction and saw it go down.

She was an elderly woman, so no flight risk. But she was PIIIIIISSSED that we wouldn't let her go. Awkward, but felt like the right thing to do (obviously).

When I lived in Boston my apartment was on Commonwealth Ave at a horrible intersection that desperately needed a delayed green light. Comm Ave is 4 lanes with two side access streets and the train is above ground, so it's just a disaster. Not to mention it's always full of college kids walking around. Saw or heard an accident almost every week. One time I heard an accident and looked out my window, and saw a car hit a parked car. Driver opens the door and falls out with two empty beer cans tumbling out with him. He stumbled to his feet and started to run, and a bystander chased him down and tackled him from behind. Bystander put him in a chicken wing and put a knee in his back until the cops got there. Crazy shit. Bystander was a big, athletic looking guy, but WTF? You don't know if the guy has a gun or a knife. Driver was already in a panicked state, no telling what a cornered animal is capable of. I'd guess most police would advice against taking action like that.

but then i started thinking about it and there's a shittonne of nightmare intersections on CommAve...

(i lived at 1999 my junior year in college. total dump)

((but for real, is it the one where Comm Ave from downtown abruptly turns left after having been straight for a while? a little past T's Pub (going from long-ago memory here...))

Close. I think you are talking about the corner of Brighton Ave, which was like 10 lanes crossing with the side streets feeding in at angles. I lived at 1404 Comm, corner of Comm and Allston St, about halfway between BU and BC.

So right by the liquor store and close to Northeast Brew Pub? The manager of the liquor store circa 1999-2001 is still in my law school fantasy football league today.

Yep, right between those two, I think. Liquor store seemed to be where the road started to go uphill, and NE brew pub was maybe a block or so east of me, if I recall correctly.

Inevitable. We have been stalking her for years.

ETA: Completely forgot until after I hit submit that I'm 90% sure I saw her last year when I was walking on BU's campus.
