Swamp NHL Playoff Pool 2020

Post by travzilla » Mon Jul 27, 2020 5:33 pm

If it's August, and It's Edmonton, then it must be NHL playoffs. The contenders have been whittled to only the most elite 77% of teams. Who has the strength, will, and immunity to become a Stanley Cup Champion? Also the Minnesota Wild will be around.

Returning this year is my Playoff Pool. The details:
  • Players are seperated into 10 groups based on their regular season scoring (points per game).
  • Each group has a multiplier value that alters how much their points are worth, leveling the playing field between the superstars and the, uh, coyotes.
  • There is also a TEAM group. All teams get 3 points for a win and -1 points for a loss.
  • (The qualifying round teams have an advantage of extra games, but they're also theoretically less likely to advance as far as the bye teams, so I think it sorta balances out).
To enter:

From the groups below, select 14 players and 2 teams. Players can be from any groups, but you can only have a max of 4 players from any one NHL team (your two team selections not included).

Use this google form to submit your entry: https://forms.gle/kFJA3B5mNRzBPwm87 (or if that doesn't work, PM me your player selections).

Here is the Google Doc that I am using to track everything, feel free to bookmark it. There is a tab for standings, rosters, stats. Let me know if you can't access something.
I will also post updates in this thread.

Player list:

Notes:
I increased roster size this year since there is an extra round and more teams.
I changed the group multipiers to go up by .2 instead of .25 to more closely reflect the actual spread in the real stats.

yep got them, just entering a few at a time.
Every year I always forget what I learned from the year before about how I should be setting up the formulas and linking cells and stuff, so I end up trial and erroring a bunch of steps to get it to work the way i want ;)

I may want to make some changes to my roster, if that's possible.

If I did this I was gonna draft Reilly Smith as a sleeper but he’s showing why he’s not a bad bet to lead VGK in points these playoffs.

Max 4 players per team (as per the thread) or max 2 players per team (as per the verbiage at the top of the form)?

4 players per team, that's a typo on the entry form. (if anyone limited themselves to 2 players from a team they can change their lineups.

Entering lineups today. Entry deadline will be Saturday afternoon.

One more thing to clarify -
The round-robin games for the top seeds that are being played to determine seeding: I wasn't planning on including those stats in the pool. To me, those aren't playoff games and I'm not all that interested in them. However, if people think it's better to include them so as to even out the games played disparity, I'm good either way. As it is, I'm leaving them out unless people want them in.

I'd say no extra points except for the "play-in" rounds. Those are legit games. Games for seeding that don't count towards a series shouldn't.

My vote would be to add the round robin games, but it's certainly not a hill I'm willing to die on.

Feel bad about not determining this before people picked rosters but I think I'm gonna stick with not including the seeding games. I do like the idea that more games = more points = more fun but I think the pool should just be playoff (series) games. Plus I like that it adds an interesting advantage for players from lower seeded teams.

Here's the standings heading into round 1:

Image

Degen did not lose a single player, while I thought 44 million dollars could buy the leafs better than a 2% shooting percentage. All 7 of my play-in round players lost.

Chedda and Giff can finally get in on the action, as they both have 14 players joining from the bye teams.

Dominik Kubalik (CHI) and Sean Monahan (CGY) were the highest scorers with 16.8 points each.
