Chelsea finally signed a new goalie. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/54274909

Kepa is now our league cup goalie.

- The entire 18 yard box shouldn't be a penalty, it should be reshaped
- The player who draws the penalty or has the last touch should take the penalty
The Football Ramble podcast read a listener email from a guy named Dave about resizing the penalty area like basketball's 3 pt line today.

Ha, but that's not what I would have said and maybe kinda the opposite? Something closer to this:

Because isn't the blue X a more dangerous direct position than the red X?

Definitely.

Also, it looks like the Peacock programming is a little more normal this week.

This is all from KDB's penalty. Like obviously it was a universal positive, but the location seems like its begging players to go down if they can.

Not really sure about that. Totally depends on what's going on in both spots.

If a guy has the ball at the blue X, but the defending team is organized, that's not a big deal. If a guy has the ball at the red X, the goalie is an extremely vulnerable situation. Red X can shoot near or far post or pass to the middle or back post and the goalie is kind of in a fucked situation. Blue X, as a goalie, I can see all of his potential options Red X, I've got my side/back to almost 60 percent of the field.

I would agree that a three point line/arc is a good solution. The top corners of the box just aren't as threatening as they are made to be with the current penalty box.

But I WOULD agree that if the ball is out closer to the bottom corner of the box, towards the endline, that is not an especially dangerous position, so I'd be in favor of shrinking the penalty area by 4 or 5 yards on each side.

What would be interesting is whether that would be the demarcation of where a goalie can handle the ball. Shrinking that area would be an interesting wrinkle, for sure.

Yeah, I was thinking that as well. Balls get to the blue X area many times in games. It's not always a big deal. But when an offense gets possession in the red X area, it seems like goals result a lot. It's very hard to defend both all three of a shot, a square cross, and a pass back to a central attacker.

It’s probably measurable. xG is pretty widespread now, can it measure things other than goals? Like the probability of a goal from a crossing position? Red X is pretty dangerous if it has space to cross and isn’t someone who sucks.

Yeah, a good exercise for the weekend is to note how many times the ball gets to the Blue X and the attacking team pretty much resets, or just dumps it out wide. Typically there are going to be 4 or 5 defenders stopping the ball and clogging up passing lanes.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the intent, but I thought it was direct goal-scoring position versus dangerous position. I would think the blue X would be a more frequent foot-to-goal area than red X? Like in the example that made me write this, KDB could have crossed or theoretically could have cut back inside, but his position at the time of the foul wasn't dangerous without another City player in support.

I guess what we’re learning most about soccer in the VAR era is that people touch the ball with their hands a lot.

Yeah they are fun. Attacking football, very likeable cast of characters...plus Jack Harrison, US Prep school instead of Man U Academy and a year at Wake Forrest.

I'm just surprised they are doing so well with very little addition from the team that got promoted. I mean, they took care of business last season, but I thought they'd need more up top. But Bamford is proving a lot folks wrong so far.

Anyone familiar enough with Ruben Dias to convince me his profile doesn't just sound like "Otamendi but younger so he could evolve out of the aggressive mistakes"?
