If they’re younger, threats of what they’ll force through in a post McConnell (age 78) world.

If they’re dirty, public airing or investigations if the situation makes it possible. If they’re Lindsay Graham or someone like him, exposure of whatever it is that has him lapdog to Trump. In theory, they should be furious about Garland and everything since to do more than grandstand, vote, lose and move on.
I think you’re overstating the effect of the first one. And assuming the second exists when there really isn’t much evidence for it.

I think murder threats are the only thing that could work. But those would be exposed.

Fuck it. They turned it into a banana republic. Might as well go full bore. Like make a DeepFake of McConnell getting railed by a big black porn star, put it on a thumb drive, and drop it off to him, telling him it goes out if he steps out of line.

Biden will never expand the Court to 11. He’s an institutionalist who cares way too much about being liked by Republicans. The entire ballgame is preventing confirmation before January (and also winning in November of course).

Nothing works in shaming Republicans. They either already have a sense of some things going too far, or they don’t. Even the threat of losing their seats only goes so far.

The only thing that works is keeping Republicans out of positions of power in the first place. Unless the Dem isn’t sufficiently “progressive” of course.

They'll have someone on the Court before the election, so that if/when Trump loses and contests the election (as you know he will) and takes it to the Supreme Court, the fix will be in.

Any Republican who sides with the Dems on this has to assume that he/she will lose their seat in a primary next time they’re up for re-election. The religious right has Roe v. Wade in their sights and this will mobilize them like nothing else.

Roberts has done as much as anyone to warp democracy in favor of the GOP. His opinion in Shelby County destroyed the Voting Rights Act. He has voted to enshrine partisan gerrymandering.

If it comes down to Biden vs Trump, no way does he rule for Biden.

God, it’s hard to imagine anything wimpier than Schumer saying “But McConnell said no justices in an election year.” Or calling him a hypocrite. And I think there’s about a zero percent chance that if Schumer had done that, you or Mr D or some others would’ve been impressed.

You’re not the audience. The political press is the audience right now. Throwing his words back at him and *showing* that he’s full of shit is a better move for that audience.

(Even the voters aren’t the audience yet. They don’t even know who Ginsburg was.)

We’ll see. But I’m confident in my prediction. Go ahead and bookmark my post. Biden will not expand the Court to 11.

ETA: Also, JFC, how could I be so naive to not think that the guy who helped Clarence F’n Thomas get on the Supreme Court won’t do this? I know you reflexively believe that every establishment Dem is awesome, but what exactly in Biden’s history makes you think he’ll take a radical step that hasn’t been done in decades.

AB, Brian, PDX, whoever ... tell me who out of Schumer, Markey and AOC put out a counter-political message in an impossibly serious moment and who went for likes on a cutesy tweet. RBG wasn’t room temp before McConnell declared her spot ready to be filled and of the three I listed you got one threat, one call to action and one lame zinger. So fuck Schumer and his false action and fuck off if you think the Dem leader in the Senate did anything of value tonight in the aftermath.

There’s nothing reasonable about taking a politician at his word In one particular instance that suits you after you’ve spent months claiming he’s a serial liar.

Obviously neither you or I know what Biden will do if the Rs jam a replacement through. But you appear to be basing your prediction on the supposed fact that Biden cares too much about being liked by Republicans. *That* is nonsense. Biden was involved in ramming the ACA down the GOP’s throat when they united against it.

This is the point. Schumer is the Dem leader in the Senate. He can’t go around crusading for radical changes during a campaign where the median voter is already predisposed to worry that the Dems have become too radical. Especially not before the body reaches room temperature.

Markey is just a Senator from a liberal state who has no national role or prominence. AOC is a rep from a liberal district who is already seen as radical.

They have different roles and have thus taken different approaches.

Plus, what evidence is there that if Schumer had made Markey’s statement, the Rs would be less likely to hurry a replacement through?

If your argument depends on ignoring the biggest legislative battle of this century, it’s just not a persuasive argument.
You’re playing rhetorical games to defend the establishment Democrat, as usual. You know damn well that Biden’s incessant career-long lying has been about his past “accomplishments,” particularly with respect to his biography, and not really about his future political intents. That’s how he became the guy who was first in his family to go to college, was the smartest guy at Syracuse Law School, participated in civil rights protests, and got arrested visiting Nelson Mandela on Robben Island.

That’s different from Biden saying that he would like to work with Republicans and that he opposes Court expansion, statements that are actually born out by his his highly relevant past work on the judicial committee - e.g., Clarence Thomas. Your argument conveniently ignores his years on that committee which is a lot more relevant than what he did in a non-voting role as VP on the ACA. Also, Biden’s history on legislative issues while VP is significantly less triumphant than you frame it:

https://theintercept.com/2019/06/24/joe ... -mconnell/

Reminder that this discussion all started with being told that I’m “100% wrong, boss” by making a statement that I then backed up with *Biden’s own recent statements on the exact issue.* I’m willing to revisit this prediction in a few years, but to suggest that I’m being unreasonable is pure sophistry.
