My father claimed that Ford doctored the ball.

Ford didn't disagree...
Ford described his illicit behavior as concession to age:

"I didn't begin cheating until late in my career, when I needed something to help me survive. I didn't cheat when I won the twenty-five games in 1961. I don't want anybody to get any ideas and take my Cy Young Award away. And I didn't cheat in 1963 when I won twenty-four games. Well, maybe a little."
"beautiful, with an exotic-yet-familiar facial structure and an arresting gaze."

He was part of the raging alcoholic Yankee crew with Mantle and Martin, right? If so, I’m impressed he made it to 91 years old.

He was so I just assumed.

(Also, not to go all Francesa, but its weird the Yankees have the history they do and Ford is their all-time best SP.)

Speaking of 1960s Yankee drunks, one of my friend’s fathers told me a great story of seeing Joe Pepitone beat up two much bigger guys in a barfight in your neck of the Hudson Valley. This would’ve been sometime in the 1980s.

Agreed. But of course if you list all time Yankee greats, you probably list a dozen hitters before you consider a pitcher.

I read Joe Pepitone’s autobiography when I was a teenager. I learned that, even when he was a star, he usually had sex with ugly women, because he said picking up attractive ones was too much work.

We may have mentioned this before, but if you're talking the original 16 teams, the only teams that the Yankees' best SP is better than their best ever is probably only Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

Whitey Ford used his wedding ring to cut up the ball. And after the umps would warn him about it, Elston Howard would drag the ball against a sharpened buckle on his shin guard before throwing it back.

This has been annoying me since you posted it because it made my brain start thinking "Everlast Throws the Complete Game" or something.

Oh, not your post, just remembering that album and album title and basically everything that surrounds Everlast.

Well, I assumed you were saying "but it should be Everlast Wins Game 7 or Everlast drinks the team under the table to be a proper reversal.
