A few years ago I got all my Xmas gifts off Etsy. One of the gifts the seller included some beeswax candles that were some amalgamation of forest and earth scents that were amazing. I had them sitting on a shelf for a bit before I decided to burn them and forgot who had sent them. I want them back in my life.P.D.X. wrote: ↑Sun Nov 29, 2020 9:43 amI suspect your baseline is standard big box paraffin candles. Like saying "all bread sucks" based on grocery store plastic-wrapped & sliced varieties. Of course they're $$$, but soy, coconut, and beeswax candles scented with natural extracts are a different ballgame.
Come at me.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

I was having relations with a candlemaker up until a week ago when we decided to take a covid break. Concur that the earthier scents are far superior. Cedar, oak moss, tobacco, sandalwood, bourbon, etc are all quite nice. She makes a lot of flowery ones of course that do nothing for me but do sell well amongst the womenfolk.

Am I weird in thinking that most flowers smell terrible? Never understood the concept that flowers smell good.
While we are on the topic of scented candles, I saw a headline that scented candles are seeing an uptick in negative reviews due to complaints that they have no odor. COVID is ruining everything!

I mean, personal preference and all, but I absolutely hate cloyingly sweet smells in a house. One of my SILs used to always crank up this potpourri stuff and I would go over and unplug it after about 10 minutes. Legit made me gag and get a headache. Turned into a funny, but not joking kind of thing with us... After awhile she moved on to some less "smack you in the face with the stank paddle" type stuff that was tolerable.
It was like patchouli oil. Fuck that fucking shit. That should get you locked up... On a plane? Oh, man, unacceptable.
But, just in general, I like a nice flower smell when I'm outside and it doesn't overwhelm all other senses. Not a fan (at all) of that shit in a candle or other fake smell. (I buy my wife flowers occasionally, but those never rise to that level.)

Those do actually give me a headache. I never buy bouquets for the house that include them and need to be careful where I stand at wakes.

Now I'm confused, I thought Steve and AB were saying yes that I'm weird. I'm not repulsed by the smell of flowers, and I don't mind having them in the house, but I don't like the smell of flowers.MaxWebster wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 9:19 am finally. people that understand me.

Speaking of smells and headaches, there was a store in our local mall growing up that used to give me migraines when I was little. It was a national clothing chain that went out of business, I can't remember the name. I must have been about 5 or 6, as it was before I was diagnosed as getting migraines, and we didn't know what they were. I always associated the headaches with the color of the carpeting in the store. They had a terrible color scheme that only existed in the 70s. One side of the store was a horrible maroon and the other a cream color, split by a linoleum walkway cutting through the middle of the store. I remember complaining to my mother that the carpets gave me a headache, and she dismissed it as me making up a lame excuse to complain about clothes shopping. Many years later I was reading an article about migraines, and someone mentioned the same store giving them headaches, and it turns out a cleaning product they used triggered migraines.

Though I'll admit that too many lilies in one place can be overwhelming.
Hell, I even like the smell of geraniums, which don't really have a smell but they remind me of my years working in the greenhouse with my grandmother.
Lilacs are the bomb, though.

This is making me question everything about my own preferences. I think I like flowers outside but maybe find them overwhelming inside? But pine and eucalyptus are very nice.

Love the smell of flowers.
However, as mentioned up thread, the smell of patchouli oil is revolting. And most scented candles are gross.
