Yeah, joking aside this seems like a very terrible idea.

They tried to do something like this in Utah in the most recent legislative session. It didn't go very far.

And, make it pretty damned hard for a company to hire a truck driver.

OK, I'm reading more about it and it sounds interesting. Seems less regressive than the current taxes on gas.

Surely the part about the drivers was a joke?

It's probably a great idea in the abstract.

But it's something for a lame-duck Democratic congress and administration to do *after* they've lost, because it will be hated.

Plus, didn't Biden just say that he won't raise taxes on families making less than $400K?

Assuming it replaces the gas tax, which in some states hasn’t changed in 40 years, it could at least be a more efficient and fair way to distribute the burden. Those electric vehicle pansies would finally pull their weight for one thing.

I've been told that even if people save money or receive greater services, anything that's called a tax is DOA and the country can and should never consider it.

I agree that in the long run, when electric cars are commonplace, we’ll need VMTs to fund highways. But I don’t think we’re anywhere near that point yet. Plus I think it’s too early to remove one of the incentives to buy electric.

Learned today that Sec. Buttigieg is now officially a resident of the great state of Michigan. (He and his husband bought a home in Traverse City and sold their home in South Bend. I was presuming he might soon re-establish residency in Indiana for a possible future run for Congress or the governorship, but given how red of a state it is he might just decide to stay in Michigan and try to succeed Debbie Stabenow in 2024 if she retires.)

It’s a stupid photo for sure but presumably the children were born in a hospital.

Another (empty) bed in the hospital is as good/likely a place as any for that shot. If this is (presumably) a few minutes after they were born.

This post has nothing to do with Mayor Pete, but this thread seemed the best place to drop it.

That said, here is a fascinating article about the fucked up state of our ports and the clogs getting products into and through the country. Costs and prices are going through the roof and delivery times are growing ever-longer. This WaPo article (thanks, Pruitt!) is a great exploration of what is causing all this. (I worked in the global transportation industry for most of my life and have been hearing about this issue from old friends all year long - so it was great to read a well-researched piece on the subject.)

NOW is the time to hoard toilet paper.

Half kidding, but this doesn't look good. At the very least, Christmas shop now though.

Just out of curiosity (and there's not really a "right" or "wrong" answer here I don't think), but would you watch a similar documentary about Bernie or someone like AOC?

No, but for a different reason. Or for one reason rather than two (the other being I read, not watch).

How long before someone in the FoxNews extended universe says the bridge collapse was a 'false flag' operation? It's probably already happened.

And if this were two years ago, its 100% "an obvious assassination attempt in a liberal US city".
