1G, 1A for Mantha tonight.
Gotta think, as much as he was a stud in Detwah... Nice to land in this situation overall.

Sadly, Namestnikov is a reasonably valuable player on the Wings' roster (second or third line), especially when it comes to the upcoming expansion draft.

Re: 2020-2021 NHL Regular Season Thread
Patrick Marleau is going to tie Gordie Howe career games played record tonight at 1,767.
The craziest stat I saw today regrading Marleau was this: He has appeared in at least one game with 37% of every NHL player who has ever played in the 104 year history of the league (3009 of 8100)

That’s wild. Marleau has always been a class act.

Imagine having a time machine and telling an 18-year-old Marleau that he’d break one of Gordie Howe’s record 24 years later and it would be in Las Vegas.

Easy. I’d tell him to dedicate all 11 years they play together to trying to set Joe Thornton up for a four goal game.

If the Kings lose to the Ducks tonight (regulation or OT/SO), VGK become first team in the NHL to clinch a playoff berth.

Craaaaaazy game. Pens up 6-0 going to 3rd. Won 7-6!

The Penguins are the 1st team in NHL history to win a game in which they were outscored by 5 goals in the 3rd period.
Entering tonight, NHL teams were 0-270-0 in the regular season and 0-9 in the postseason when they were outscored by 5+ goals in the 3rd period. h/t @EliasSports

Vegas beat San Jose last night for the seventh time in seven games to become the first team to lock up a playoff berth. Made for eight straight wins for the third time in team history, three more eight-game winning streaks than the Minnesota/Dallas franchise has ever had in 50+ years.

I don't know if Americans can see this. Tonight Sportsnet is broadcasting in 7 languages.
https://partners.sportsnet.ca/2021/molson/
I'll try the Vietnamese one to see if it sounds corny. It'll be interesting because the only hockey terms I know in Vietnamese are the ones my dad made up, same with any other sport that's not soccer. For example, my dad calls the penalty box, jail.

Dallas currently outshooting Detroit 41-6 through two periods.

Vrana put four on the Stars Thursday night, so maybe the Wings will not be exposing him in the expansion draft.degenerasian wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 7:42 pm Dallas currently outshooting Detroit 41-6 through two periods.

And by the way the Vietnamese broadcast sucks. They found two guys who can't follow the play at all and explains nothing. If I were Vietnamese and didn't know how to watch hockey, I'd still not know how to watch hockey. My dad's translations are better.
It's a cool idea and i don't know how the other languages sound. But they should have had auditions.

I saw a promo on NHL Network for the multi-language broadcast. We don’t get it here but it’s a cool idea.

NBC has officially pulled out of the bidding for the NHL’s second TV package, according to U.S. and Canadian sources. Next season will now mark the first time since the '05-06 campaign that the network will not carry any NHL games.
NHL’s new broadcast partner is likely to be TNT, which of course produces NBA on TNT. ESPN will be NHL’s primary broadcast partner.

If the NHL wanted to make sure it is treated as a second banana/afterthought to the NBA, then mission accomplished.

NBC's coverage is across the board horrible. Adios, muchachos!
Don't count out Fox or ESPN for NHL package #2. I'd love to see some competition.

Hmmm, looks like all signs are pointing towards Turner/TNT, but I don't see it official anywhere. Also, am I wrong in thinking TNT only has one, (sometimes two) nights of basketball a week? The certainly have the bandwidth to do the same thing for hockey. Turner's pre and post game show for the NBA is basically the gold standard, right? This will be great.brian wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 12:28 pmESPN and Turner/TNT are the partners for the next seven years.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 12:18 pm NBC's coverage is across the board horrible. I wonder if one these networks doesn't poach Chris Johnston from SportsNet. He's kind of redundant with Friedge there.

I love NBC's NHL fanfare, I think their in-game presentation is fine (I get the Pierre hate but he doesn't set me off the way he seems to do many others) and since they dumped Millbury the studio show is at least no longer actively offensive.

Yeah, I'm the same... Like a lot of Caps fans, I really didn't like the pretty obviously biased Millbury, which tended to exacerbate Pierre's (pretty mild) bias.
It's almost a subconscious thing, but when you've worked for an organization, you just tend to see it through a certain perspective and it seeps into the broadcast.

Not official yet, but John Ourand of Sports Business Journal is reporting Turner grabbing the remains of the NHL package is "likely". He's probably the top sports business reporter in America, so I would expect it to be accurate.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 12:46 pmHmmm, looks like all signs are pointing towards Turner/TNT, but I don't see it official anywhere. TNT airs NBA usually one or two nights a week (Thursday nights with exclusive coverage and Tuesday sometimes). With TV ratings being lower Fridays and Saturdays, that really leaves only Monday and Wednesday as top-quality options for them. I don't know what their contract with AEW (wrestling) specifies as far as if there is required night of the week to air, but I don't think they're going to want to run the first couple months of the hockey season against Monday Night Football, particularly when they are trying to build their brand new coverage.
"Inside the NBA" took a few years to truly mesh and they have Barkley (and have had him since 2000). There is no Barkley of the NHL. He hosted "Saturday Night Live" in 1993 and everyone knew of his larger-than-life personality and willingness to say whatever is on his mind before he retired from the NBA.

Literally anything is better than what NBC is doing. Sure, Milbury and Roenick aren't around any more, so it's been slightly better, but it's clear the sport is such an afterthought for NBC. Give someone else a try.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 1:25 pmNot official yet, but John Ourand of Sports Business Journal is reporting Turner grabbing the remains of the NHL package is "likely".
