2021 IIHF World Junior Championships

Post by degenerasian »

Group A
Canada
Finland
Slovakia
Switzerland
Germany

Group B
Sweden
USA
Russia
Czech Rep
Austria

Group B is heavy, Austria might end up something like -30 goals against.

Canada's captain Kirby Dach is out of the tournament with a broken wrist.

Germany only has 2 goalies, 5 d-men, and 9 forwards available for the next 2 games. (COVID)

It's a weird year. No big-name draft-eligible players like Lafreniere last year. There simply are no players in this year's group on Lafreniere's level, but even so, most of the top prospects aren't here. I think only a couple of the top dozen or so 2021 prospects made their respective teams. So, that's disappointing.

But still a lot of talent. Canada and the USA are loaded. Byfield, Cozens, Quinn, Byram, Drysdale, Beniers (2021 draft eligible), Boldy, Caulfield, Turcotte, Zegras, Sanderson, etc.

Really disappointed to hear about Kirby Dach's injury. He was the forward I was looking forward to watching more than any other.

Me too. In the NHL season. Hope it's not as bad as they're saying.

Yeah, you Hawks fans must be sick about this. It's a shame. I've been avoiding every article that mentions him because I don't like to read about injuries. But from what I gather, it's not good.

Curious to see how Peyton Krebs looks. There’s a better than decent chance he makes the VGK roster for cap reasons if nothing else.

That McKenzie video got me pumped up.

This is a good year if you're into goalies. Iaroslav Askarov (Russia, Nashville draft pick) and Spencer Knight (USA, Florida draft pick) were both first-round picks, which is very rare for goalies.

Goalies are impossible to evaluate. When I was watching Carter Hart last season, I was trying to think of other high-pedigree goalies who were established in the NHL by age 21. Hart and Vasilevskiy are pretty much the entire list for the past decade. Even John Gibson had to wait a bit longer than I remembered. Now I'm pinning all of my hopes on Askarov and Knight, so I'll be watching Russia and USA closely. (Well, if I can find a stream. Going to be so disappointed tonight if I get shut out.)

I may try to watch some Sweden games, as five members of the Red Wings' organization are on their team, including Lucas Raymond (first rounder this year) and Theodor Niederbach (second rounder, this year), who may be on the same line.

Some things never change, eh?

Sweden is always fun to watch. I loved their team last year. Lucas Raymond and Alexander Holtz might be stars.

Philip Broberg is the captain, and I'm very curious to see what he does. He was on the team last year, but wasn't asked to do much. He was the Oilers' #1 pick in 2019. I hated that pick at the time for various reasons, but I've heard nothing but encouraging things since then.

Sweden also has a goalie named Jesper Wallstedt, who might be a 2021 first-round pick. Not sure if he'll play much, tho, because Sweden also has a couple of decent 19-year-olds. (Including Penguins prospect Calle Clang, which might be the best goalie name ever.)

This site is working for me today. (I wanted to watch the Mike Tyson/Roy Jones Jr fight/farce a few weeks ago, dug thru my old bookmarks, and was shocked to find that this still worked.) It's certainly not ideal, and it will take you a few tries to find the correct link. And make sure your antivirus software is up to date, I suppose. But in desperate times...

If anybody has better options, hit me up.

Germany made this game vs Finland interesting for a while, but I think they're going to fade away. And then they have to turn around and play Canada tomorrow. Stutzle looks as good as advertised, tho.

Book recommendation, as I listen to The Rheostatics and wait for USA/Russia: Gare Joyce's 'When the Lights Went Out,' about the infamous 1987 World Juniors brawl between Canada and the USSR at Piestany. Canada went from almost winning a gold medal to being kicked out of the tournament.

Published in 2006, and Joyce interviewed as many players/coaches/officials as he could find. Notable names from those teams: Brendan Shanahan, Theo Fleury, Sergei Federov (!), Alexander Mogilny (!!), Vladimir Konstantinov, etc. If I can recall correctly, the referee has fallen completely off the grid. And even 20 years later, a few Canadian players hated Pierre Turgeon for refusing to leave the bench and join the fight. It's a good look at what hockey was at the time.

Do you like between-the-legs goals? Elmer Soderblom has you covered. You'll want to watch this about a dozen times.

Really liked what I saw from Broberg for Sweden today. And TSN is already doing its part to market him as a star. And why not? He is rather gorgeous, in addition to being a great skater.

As much as I hate fighting, I love reading about that era. It's almost a different sport. (After the tournament, in his first game back with Peterborough, Luke Richardson was involved in another bench-clearing brawl.) The Piestany game is on YouTube, by the way, or at least it was when I watched a few years ago.

Yeah, I remember talking to you about Mogilny after I read this book. One of the most striking things I learned was that Mogilny grew up in far-east Russia, a couple of hundred miles north of Vladivostok, until a scout spotted him around age 11 and he had to move to the capital. And he had nothing in common with the city kids in his age group. 5000 miles from Moscow sounds like the most remote, loneliest place on the planet, especially in the 1980s.

Cons: Defenseman picked by Edmonton

Yeah, yeah, I know. But that's becoming less true every year, I promise. They've actually done a decent job of drafting/developing defensemen lately. That's one of the reasons I didn't like that pick. 2019 was such a forward-heavy draft, and I wanted somebody like Zegras, Boldy, or Caufield. Instead, they took a defenseman who only started playing the position at age 15. But, like I said, I've heard nothing but raves recently.

Follow-up on that Soderblom goal. Mister D, you might remember Marek Malik's between-the-legs goal vs Olaf Kolzig in 2005. Malik's son is the Czech goalie who was mistreated by Soderblom today.

Slovakia doesn't have much in the way of offense, but they're limiting Canada's shots.

This is a welcome change after yesterday's games. You said that Austria might finish -30 in the tournament. USA beat them 11-0. Outshot them 73-10. (But, to be fair, I haven't looked at the advanced stats, which might tell a different story.) And that game was somehow even more lopsided than Canada's 16-2 win over Germany. Not the best day in this tournament's history.

Think I saw the Czechs have a similar roster as well. I ended up signing up for Sling so I could get NHLNetwork. I can't stand the NFL, but I can't tear myself away from a snow game either. The Czech/Russia game gonna have to wait.

I admire your dedication. Glad to hear that you'll be tuning in. The next couple of days are meh, but then the good stuff starts -- Russia/Sweden on Wednesday night, then Canada/Finland and USA/Sweden on New Year's Eve. Quarterfinals begin Saturday.

(And snow games are wonderful. I just watched the 1977 NFL season, and there were a handful that year. This Packers/Vikings game is the greatest thing.)

I assume so, tho I usually don't stick around that long. Or my stream cuts out. (I was just reading about the 1982 Canada team, which just sang the anthem itself, badly, because nobody had a recording at the arena.)

So, here's a thing. When I've watched Canada, I've been disappointed that I haven't noticed Quinton Byfield very much. (His most noticeable moment yesterday was when an official sent him off the ice before a face-off because he wasn't wearing a mouthpiece.) I have a hard time criticizing an athlete's performance, especially a teenager's performance. That's even more true this tournament because Canadians and Americans have barely played since March.

So, it's always weird to me whenever I wade into the parts of the Internet that take this stuff too seriously. Like, people seem personally aggrieved that Byfield hasn't been better. Yeah, I know that he was expected to be a top player, but the criticism makes me uneasy. Anyway, I'm hoping he does something vs the dastardly Swiss tomorrow.

Definitely looking forward to watching QB. Him being near a full year younger than Lafreniere has me optimistic that he'll blossom as he gets older. That's coming from the same person who said (out of his ass) that Eichel would be better than McJesus.

He didn't play much in this tournament last year. I figured he would have a bigger role this year, but his ice time has been limited so far. Actually, very few of their forwards really stuck out last night. Credit to Slovakia for that.

I love their defense, tho. Bowen Byram looks great. (So unfair that Colorado gets to add that guy to a defense that already has Cale Makar.) Jamie Drysdale is dynamic.

When we vacationed in Czechia in 2019, I was chatting with a tour guide about international sports. About the Russians, he said, "It is simple. We hate them! We'd rather beat the Russians and finish in 5th, ahead of them, than finish in 2nd, behind them." They have long, bitter memories of living under the Russian thumb in the Cold War era - especially 1968.

This reminds me that I need to reread Milan Kundera at some point. Euros have centuries-long hatred down to an art form.

Also, I don't think I've ever typed 'Czechia' yet, so here it is. And yes, I'm insanely jealous that you visited there, sancarlos.

It's a great place to visit. Prague is unique among many Euro capitals in that it has never been bombed. So, all the medieval and other cool architecture is still intact. It is much cheaper than western Europe, that's for sure, so that's a plus when you are eating and drinking out every day! And the people were awesome. The owner of the small family-owned hotel we stayed at (thank you, Rick Steves!) didn't want to take a credit card, so he held our reservation just on our word, with our assurance we would pay cash for our stay. We took day trips and a river trip, too. To my wife's dismay, I ate some form of schnitzel or goulash every single day. Best vacation my wife and I have ever taken.
