Yep. He stands out even on a team with this much talent. I love the way he dances along the blue line.

I know that Canada is the better team, but I wasn't expecting them to dominate Finland like this. At one point, the shots were 22-1!

Down 4-0 right now to the US. I miscalculated one important thing. Sweden as an Oilers prospect as captain.

Meanwhile, the story of the tournament must be Germany. Victims of COVID, lost 16-2 in the first game, they're going to finish 3rd in the group and play in a knockout game for the first time in their history at the World Juniors (mostly likely now against Russia)

Never change, degen.

Is everyone ready for 13 hours of hot, steamy quarterfinal action? Or, rather, cold and icy quarterfinal action? I have my fight strap tied down. Some old Roberto Duran and Ken Buchanan fights cued up for intermissions. Let's get it on.

12 EST Russia/Germany
330 EST Finland/Sweden
7 EST Canada/Czech
1030 EST USA/Slovakia

Finland/Sweden looks to be the best game. Russia/Germany could be interesting. I'm trying to talk myself into thinking that Germany has a chance. Russia doesn't have any forwards like Stutzle and Peterka.

I posted the first Soderblom between-the-legs goal in the tournament, so I may as well post this one, too.

Lucas Raymond looks great today. Nice day if you're a Red Wings fan.

Germany certainly had its chances against Russia. Very nice tournament for them. I don't see Florian Elias's name on any lists of 2021 prospects, but I'm sure he played his way up some draft boards.

Two beautiful goals by Sweden but then by the mid point of the game the Finns took over and they get a late winner.

Exactly what I wanted today. Fantastic game. That late goal cheated me out of overtime hockey, tho.

Heinola had another excellent game for Finland.

Also, I love the fact that the player of the game is given a wallet from an Edmonton leather shop. This just doesn't seem like something that would happen in a glitzy tournament in 2021.

The wallets, plus that tacky SUV parked in the corner makes this feel so small-time. Feels like a Euro game. Or worse, an Islanders game. But it's not like it's blocking anybody's view this year.

I think this is more about Hockey Canada and the IIHF than Edmonton. (Well, maybe not the leather thing.) But if you want to take some shots, go ahead. Just go easy on Broberg. He was playing hurt.

Well, that short clip of Broberg's interview with the Swedish media is tough to watch. Is he more upset about being eliminated from this tournament, or the ever-growing reality that he will have to return to Edmonton and stay there?

Ouch. Didn't see the interview, but I read about it. That's a shame.

Dylan Cozens just scored again for Canada. I've been saying for about five years now that Buffalo is an interesting team. I keep waiting for them to be a good team. Maybe they will be by the time Cozens gets there. He looks special.

And Byram scored as I typed that. Cozens created the play.

bapo! you are more than welcome aboard the bandwagon when we compete (7 years from now)

in all seriousness tho, average goaltending alone should be enough to make the team at least good this year. also the penalty kill was historically awful last year. eh. we'll see...

You've been telling me this for over a decade now. Even the Pirates have been competitive in that time. Eventually I'm going to expect results.

Canada/Russia and USA/Finland in the semis tomorrow. The North American teams have been the class of the tournament, so I hope everything goes as planned tomorrow to set up what could be a pretty great final.

Off-day book recommendation: Jack Falla's 'Open Ice' (2008). A collection of essays from an older hockey writer. Chapters about attending Maurice Richard's public viewing, visiting Georges Vezina's grave, buying new skates to replace his 20-year-old pair, skating the Rideau Canal in Ottawa with his wife, taking his grandson to his first Bruins game, etc. It reads like Ken Dryden's books -- he sees hockey in a spiritual kind of way. Might be my second-favorite hockey book after 'The Game.' Highly recommended.

And I just finished Mark Spector's 'Road to Gold' (2019), about Canada at the World Juniors. I think this is the third or fourth book specifically about Canada and the World Juniors that I've read. (There's a market for this stuff.) Recommended if you're Canadian.

1.2M out of 5.5M Finns watched that game. So, yeah, some people take rivalries seriously. (I would love to live in a country where a fifth of the population tuned in for junior hockey.)

Yes, there is that. This reminded me of the Gladwellian anecdote about hockey players and January birthdays. I just looked at the Canadian and American rosters to see if that still holds true. Sure enough, 12 of the 50 players on those teams are Januarys.

Also, have you ever Bing'd birthdays on a particular date? The sites that are listed are pretty much useless. Just about every 'famous' person is somebody from YouTube or TikTok or Instagram.

According to the rankings, Sir Isaac Newton (Physicist) is the 9th most famous person born on this day, one spot ahead of HBomb94 (YouTube Star). Have to go to #27 to find the next recognizable name, Derrick Henry of the Titans. He's the best running back in the NFL! How is ranked so low?!

Thanks. It's been an action-packed day over here, as always.

Julia Ormond isn't even listed on that page that I linked earlier. She's apparently not in the top 48 famous celebrities. At least Snoopslimes (Instagram Star) and Crypt (YouTube Star) made the cut.

Enough of that. I'm ready for some hockey. Russia/Canada. How perfect. Have fun, everypony.

Canada has looked like this in every single game so far. And this is without Kirby Dach, who would have been their best player.

I want to love Askarov, but man, this is tough to watch. Ferraro has been blasting him all tournament for constantly dropping his stick, and it's definitely an issue. Second year in a row he's had a bad semifinal in this tournament.

it's bizarre, isn't it (Askarov)?

y I didn't see most of the opening round games where I guess I expect Canadian dominance but didn't expect this tonight. This looks like what you'd expect from a Canada v Austria match.

That's why I've been hoping for a Canada/USA final all tournament. USA seems like the only team even close to their level this year. Seeing them steamroll Finland, and now Russia, is kind of shocking.

Almost every skater on the team was a first-round pick in 2019 and 2020.

Maybe he’ll turn out fine, but you have to imagine Nashville would atleast strongly consider a do-over if offered.

Yeah, Askarov is crap. It seems like he loses his stick on every rush. On the other hand Levi looks pretty solid and he was a 7th round pick of the Panthers. Has never played college or major junior.

It's weird. He's obviously been impressive all thru his career, but there are times when he looks completely lost. Evaluating teenage goalies involves some sort of sorcery I'm not capable of.

And yeah, Devon Levi has been quietly great all tournament. I had never heard of him before, and there's a chance I'll never hear of him again after this tournament, but we'll probably remember his name.

I thought Levi was committed to Northeastern (Hockey East) - admittedly i've been totally off NCAA hockey for a year or two so I don't even know what the status is of it this season.

I was just reading about Jeff Glass (2005) and Justin Pogge (2006).

Sometimes I'll see an NHL game and recognize a goalie's name from this tournament. But I don't know if I remember for good reasons or bad reasons. I never look it up because I don't want to remember, 'Oh, that poor guy.' (I do remember Mark Visentin in 2011, tho. That poor fucking guy.)
