That song came up on my playlist yesterday too.

I had forgotten how much I used to love Death Cab for Cutie. Thanks for the reminder, chedda. 'Transatlanticism' and 'The Photo Album' were two of my favorite albums of the 2000s.

Listening to 'Transatlanticism' now for the first time in 10 or 15 years. I love the production on this album. Gibbard's vocals are important, and they're high in the mix and you can hear him articulate every word. But the band is given equal footing, and they sound great.

I think I found DC4C around Transatlanticism and really liked Plans and Narrow Stairs as well. We saw them at least once on what I think was probably the Narrow Stairs tour. Ra Ra Riot opened. And, since this place has rules...

I saw Death Cab on the 'Transatlanticism' tour at a great little venue that no longer exists. (Long story short: Allegheny County had a very high amusement tax, so mid-size bands just skipped Pittsburgh, and all of those venues closed.) Ben Kweller opened.

This was the same place where I saw Cat Power have a drunken freak-out, which probably isn't a unique story. Years later, I learned that a friend of a friend was downstairs from the club that night. Chan/Cat Power staggered in, saw this woman, and walked over and started kissing her. 'I was just enveloped in Cat Power's hair, cigarettes, and bourbon. It was awesome.'

Saw Ra Ra Riot at a mini-fest ahead of Passion Pit, Metric and then two or three bands* we didn’t care to stay for. Lawn, which is not an attractive last name at all, is very attractive (but left a long time ago).

Just remembered that I can post something on-topic in this thread: Rufus Wainwright in a Gap commercial singing 'What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?' in 1998. I saw this exactly once when it aired, but it stuck with me for years. (Here's the full version of the song.) I still listen to his first album a lot. I love me some Rufus.

It's a reference to a Don DeLillo novel. I've never heard their music, but I'll always love a band who admires DeLillo.

Drank a couple of beers with Death Cab (minus Ben Gibbard who was going through his Deschavorce at the time) at the Chandelier Bar at Cosmo after their show in Vegas nine years ago). Went against my policy of paying full price at casino bars but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Had a fun conversation about their previous Vegas stops when the band went in for a bit more debauchery.

Also Airborne Toxic’s Mikel Jollett is a good follow on Twitter and his autobiographical this year (Hollywood Park) is fascinating.

I'm simultaneously geeked that you got to have that experience and sad that you had to do it at Chandelier Bar of all places.

Only reason I was allowed within 50 yards of them was it was me and 3 women in my group so you’re probably right. We moved on so as not to monopolize their time or cock block. Also the ladies were sitting closer so I was in far left field so saying I “had beers with them” is accurate but only barely.

Happy new year all.

Trying to figure out where to grab takeout tonight (might end breaking with the family choice and get some tacos) and what movie(s) to watch with the kids.

We always do an appetizer night. So cheese tray, veggie tray, poor mans charcuterie (pepperoni and salami), buffalo chicken dip, hummus and pita, swedish meatballs (in an asian sauce) and chicken wings (with multiple sauce offerings). Whether me and the woman make it to midnight is always touch and go. I think we went to bed at 10 last year.

Damn that sounds good. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd do something like that.

We will get takeout Asian food instead of going out for Asian food. Then we will pretend we are on Eastern time so we can watch the ball drop, ring in the new year, and go to bed at 10.

Spent this time last year just hanging out at home, drinking Scotch, watching The Irishman, and playing the game Stardew Valley. Replicating at least some of those circumstances.

The Irishman will one day be considered Scorsese’s under-regarded masterpiece. It’s way better than The Departed which earned him his Oscar.

Stardew Valley is (at least) as good of a game as Irishman is of a movie, btw. Would be my #1 recommendation as a game for someone who doesn't usually play video games. And also for someone who does.

I really liked it the first (only) time but The Irishman feels like a movie that might benefit from repeated viewings to get your head past the deaging tricks.

And the all but deserted Times Square shots all over Twitter are pretty weird.

We discussed this in the movie thread at the time but the running time was kind of part of the experience. (Not that you disagree with that. But just saying.).

Been digging into the beer cellar, watched the London countdown with the kids with some sparkling apple juice, then watched An American Pickle with the wife, drank some champagne, now listening to 2112 (one year closer) and enjoying a presbyterian (sorry AB.)

Happy new year ya fucks. Let's hope this shit all ends soon and we can tear Las Vegas down...at least as much as some hovering between 40 and 50 and a couple younger guys can!

Seattle didn't do actual fireworks this year, so that there wouldn't be a reason for people to gather.

Instead they did a virtual show...only on TV. And it was trippy as hell...
