The Lions have had one HC last more than 4 seasons (Jim Schwartz, 5) since Barry Sanders retired so that's a safe bet regardless.
I gave him the fourth year simply due to it costing too much to eat three years' salary and I don't know the value of his contract.

I don't know what I think. It's all wait and see, especially with how he fills out his staff.

So what do I know? Well, except that Chip Kelly would fail miserably.

A pretty huge chunk of me wants to see him go to a team like the Pats or the Colts and win a Super Bowl just so I can laugh in the face of a whole shitton of idiot Lions fans. The other piece is bummed they’re definitely gonna suck ass for the next 5 years as opposed to just assuming it.

At least Detroit has other professional teams with recent championships, so you wouldn't have a parade for him in Detroit like Boston did for Bourque when he won in Colorado.

Was Patricia's relationship with Harrington ok?
If I were to rank the possibilities who's starting for the Pats next year, I'd go:
1. Garrapolo
2. Mariotta
3. Harrington edit: I meant Matthew Stafford; I guess Joey Harrington made quite the impression. He played the piano!

Assuming they get a competent QB, I'm more nervous about the Patriots defense than their offense next year.

On the other hand, dealing him now is quite smart. Still has a shit-ton of value - Detroit should get, what, a first and second this year and another high pick in 2022? At a baseline?

I might be biased, but I'd think a first (especially a mid/late round first like Indy's for example) and a mid-draft pick (like a third or fourth)

Oh, that's light. He should fetch a 1 and 2 this year and another prime pick next year. He would IMMEDIATLELY be needed and helpful in SF, Indy, NE off the top of my head. Lions should be in position for a good old fashioned bidding war.

Supposedly Watson wants to go to AFC East - Jets or Dolphins, which should clear the runway for Detroit to get a premium for one of several suitors.

Whomever trades for him would have to absorb a decent-sized cap hit (though for only two years and not insane relative to elite-ish QBs), so that might temper price a little. But agree Lions should get a 1st at minimum and then go from there.

I would have never thought to compare Matthew Stafford and Alex Smith as relative equals. They strike me as entirely different QBs.

And Watson being out there should make someone who really wants Stafford move quickly so there is no comparison to a potential package.

Aside from the similarities of those seasons (and their draft position), you can't compare Stafford and Smith. Stafford has produced on bad teams and average-ish teams year in and year out. It's scary to think what he could do with an actual offensive line and running game to be honest. Put him on the Rams for the last three years and they've won at least one Super Bowl in that time. Put him on the Saints for the last two years and they probably go to the Super Bowl at least last season and are still playing this season.

He's not perfect and he's not "elite", but he's a top 10 QB in the league (or at least worthy of being in that discussion) and those don't come on the market in their early 30s very often (as noted).

That said, his contract and his age means the Lions won't get the haul they could get, but under the circumstances a first and at least one other additional non-late round pick would be fine. If it's the Colts, the Lions would have the #7 and #21 picks, so three picks in the top 40. That's a decent jumpstart on a rebuild. I guess the part that just pisses me off is this team didn't have to be rebuilt, but firing Caldwell and hiring Fatty McRaperson means I'll have to wait until my 50s (at least) for this team to be good. I'm tired of it.

From the same writer who made the Smith comp:
Start with the money. If traded, the Patriots would take on Stafford's very manageable base salaries of $9.5 million and $12.5 million over the next two years. Stafford is also owed a $10 million roster bonus on the first day of the new league year in 2021 and 2022 as well as workout bonuses of $500,000 in each year.

If Stafford earned all that money in 2021, he'd likely be a middle-of-the-road quarterback both from a cash-spent and cap perspective. Matt Ryan made $20.5 million in cash last season, which put him 15th in the NFL, per Over The Cap. Alex Smith's cap number was $20.3 million last year, which was 15th in the league.
That looks really good for a team that just needs a QB for a good roster. I'm guessing it's a Colts Niners bidding war, with the Patriots trying to get Garrapolo at a discount to help the 49ers make the trade work.

Aaron Rodgers
Matthew Stafford

From a distance, looks like they wanted to hire someone that didn't make them look like racists, might sway Watson to stay, but didn't want to hire someone that might have any actual influence on other staffing or personnel decisions, which is an interesting and tough needle to thread.

Bienemy likely would have garnered a lot more say in personnel decisions especially if hiring him was the catalyst that got Watson to stay. So it seems to me they wanted to give the impression they tried to get Watson to stay rather than actually doing it.

I’m all for superstar agency, and I’ll never hold it against a player for asking out (while I reserve the right to call a guy a little bitch if he does it bitchily á la Harden or Wentz). I have to really ponder to come up with a guy who was more justified for asking out than Watson is.

Jets have four first round picks in the next two drafts, so the Texans would want three of those. Any type of deal starts with the #2.

If you're the Jets, why wouldn't you trade the #2. I'd rather have Watson than any QB in this draft except possibly Lawrence. You could make a solid case that Watson, even with the age difference would be much safer choice than even Lawrence.

Completely. I'd be excited to get Watson, and happy for Darnold to get a fresh start, I just don't know how much they should realistically give up to get Watson. I also can't imagine Watson would want to play for the Jets, but it seems like a lot of players are Tweeting he will end up a Jet, and apparently Allen Robinson wants to join him. That'd be something. The Jets should have a ton of cap space. It'd be nice if they could get a semi-competent CB.
