After the news he would be traded, Lions fans have raised $25,000 for a charity to help those suffering with the same brain tumor that Kelly Stafford had.

Remember when the Texans benched Tom feckin’’ Savage and have Watson the job, and he immediately made the Texans’ offense dynamic and productive? He’s not going to regress to being Sam Darnold. Give up the three #1 picks, including the #2 overall.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Since Watson holds a no-trade clause, that sounds like he can really turn the screws if he wanted to. Because if I were him, I’d push that a team, say the Jets, send no more than one 1st-rounder or he’s blocking it. That way, he can move to the Jets without the future cupboard being bare. I’d be totally for Watson screwing Houston considering the way they tore down everything around him.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
At the same time, he's under contract for quite a while and the Texans could say fuck off, sit or play. I'm not expecting them to do that and support Watson wanting to get out. I would too.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Yeah, "fuck you go sit" works if its LeVeon Bell, not when its your QB and you're looking at the #2 overall.
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
On Get Up, they were talking about how Watson may try to take the NBA player lead and bully/arrange a way to get him and his friends on the same team, so instead of the Nets super team, you have the Jets super team. NBA player contracts are so much better than the NFL ones, but it would be okay to see players have more power (but not by helping the Jets bring a QB who seems to do very well against the Patriots).

Pretty much my exact argument to my friends who are all "Fuck Deshaun, make him sit!" There's no way they're getting to that situation with Watson. And if they do, they're dumber than they've already proven they are.

Unless Watson starts tanking. Oops, another INT.

That would tank his value. He won’t do that.

Stafford to Rams for Goff, 2 1sts and a 3rd. Rams Fanny actually called this one in a text to me right after Stafford went on market.

Am I wrong or is that a really good deal for the Lions?

Two 1s, a 3, and a competent starting QB for someone who was going to leave one way or another? That’s a great deal for Detroit
And I’m glad to see Stafford going to a quality team with good talent around him. He certainly has done yeoman’s work for years without much fanfare or team success; if anyone deserves good things coming his way it’s him.

100% agree. Always liked Stafford, excited to see him walking into what seems like a great situation for him. Rams must think he is Stafford is the missing piece to win it all next year. Maybe he is.L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 11:23 pmTwo 1s, a 3, and a competent starting QB for someone who was going to leave one way or another? That’s a great deal for Detroit

Astounding!
And if 32 year old Matt Stafford (who is barely one of the top 10 QBs in the league) is worth that kind of package, what is DeShaun Watson worth?

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
That’s my fear looking at that. While I’d love to get Watson, at some point the Jets are better with Darnold and three 1st rounders and a bunch of 2nd rounders.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
The trade for Stafford was also a trade to dump Goff's salary, so comparisons to Watson might not matter unless the Texans take on a big contract in their trade.
Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Was gonna make that point. Was smart for Lions to take the contract though because either Goff gets the kick in the ass he needs and becomes worth it or the Lions can release him in 2023 with little repercussions financially. If he’s available still I expect the Lions to draft the BYU QB with the #7 pick but they’ll have the luxury of letting him sit behind Goff for one year.

Or if Goff looks competent, the Lions can trade him for more assets. They got a great return

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
Objectively the Lions got the better of this deal at the moment. However from the Rams side:
1) YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS! McVay finally has a QB he doesn't have to walk through every.single.play. He also now can rest assured his QB will look downfield if his primary receiver isn't open instead of checking down every time. He likely has a happy hangover this morning.
2) Draft stuff: Rams haven't drafted in the first round since Goff (2016). Per their Athletic beat reporter Jourdan Rodrigue (really good Twitter follow btw. She was the reporter Cam laughed at when she asked a receiver route question several years ago) The Rams assume they will draft late so don't value as much as other teams do so have been using for trades. Their arrogance leads me to believe the 3rds were a bigger deal.
3) While not a ton of cap relief, they will likely get Stafford an extension which will free up enough to keep their FA starters which they are desperate to do. The team believes their 53 are as good as any in the League. Outside of the OL, it's tough to argue.
4) Rams now have to be considered Top 2 in the NFC assuming relative good health.
5) Goff isn't devoid of skill, seems like a good guy, and doesn't seem to get frustrated (even when he should). Fact remains he's been coddled to a large extent by McVay for four seasons but even that was lessening at the end of this year. I offer the Lions new HC is the worst possible fit for Goff. He may make him cry.
When do training camps open?

I'd also argue that ranking QBs is impossible because so much of that ranking depends on a supporting cast and therefore the argument (in this impossible and flawed discussion) that Stafford is *now* a top 10 QB is a relatively solid one.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
There's a case to be made the Lions don't take a QB this draft. For starters there should be NFL-ready (or at least ready-ish) QBs in every draft and the Lions are married to Goff for at least two more years. If they don't draft a QB they can fill some holes at other positions (OL, LB, DB) with their two top-40 picks and then punt the QB decision for one more year. If Goff stinks it up in 2021 they'll have two 1st round picks in 2022 including another presumably high one no matter what the Rams do and they can draft a QB to groom to take over in 2023.
The more I think about it and with the potential that Goff still has it might be too soon to think about taking a QB in the 1st round (that said, they might be well-served to try and see how good Holmes' college scouting skills are (it's the main reason they hired him) and see what he can do by taking a flyer on a late-round pick at QB. They likely have to draft a QB somewhere because the current backups are hot trash and don't belong on an NFL roster, so I assume the team would prefer to at least have someone with some potential in the QB room as opposed to just warm bodies.

Re: 2021 NFL Black Sunday Night, Etc.
the top 2022 draft QBs are Spencer Rattler, Sam Howell, Brock Purdy, Matt Corral and ... Dillon Gabriel? if I was making a list off the top of my head right now
obviously that could change (see: Wilson, Zach and Lance, Trey) but 2021 would seem to be the time to take a QB especially given the relatively minimal dead money on Goff's contract if he isn't great in 2021
(and I'm really high on Rattler and Howell. I think Rattler is really, really good)
