Not even sure she is referring to that.. Probably other things, why the Dems are bowing down, why the AG nomination is still held up.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 9:03 amMostly because people are dumb. Do they think a “majority” of 50 can accomplish a conviction that requires 67?

I mean, there was such a blue fucking wave after Obama came to power in 2008 that everything seemed possible. And Republicans just stood strong and filibustered everything.
There was even an Onion article, or something of the sort, that said "Republicans maintain 41-59 majority in the Senate."

Sure. The Rs filibustered so much that the Ds eliminated the filibuster for executive appointments and judges below the Supreme Court. Then when the Rs gained the majority, the Ds filibustered everything. Including Justice Gorsuch - which led to the Rs eliminating the filibuster on Supreme Court justices.Johnnie wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:27 pm I mean, there was such a blue fucking wave after Obama came to power in 2008 that everything seemed possible. Except for budget reconciliation and judges, the Rs haven’t gotten anything through Congress lately either. The problem of course is that they’re fine with tax cuts and judges and racist executive orders.
Week before last, all the Senate Dems voted to use budget reconciliation for Covid relief. So most of that process can go forward without a filibuster. Now it’s a matter of what Manchin/Sinema/Feinstein will approve.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Probably don't need to throw her out on her ear, definitely needs to address the problematic nature of the text (at least the potential for it to be taken the wrong way.)
A major miscalculation you are making is... What exactly are these folks going to say? What's their angle? You guys say you support gays and transgendered and etc etc, what gives? What does that say about THEM?? That they don't?

So Biden mispronounced the name of a huge grocery chain in Michigan by pluralizing it, though in doing so he mispronounced in the exact same way that like 95 percent of Michiganders also do. Lots of debate about this on Michigan Twitter this afternoon.
(I find the Michigander speech "impediment" of pluralizing the name of most stores that are singular proper nouns charming (e.g. Meijers, Fords, Krogers, etc.). Not all other Midwesterns agree.

This came up before in another thread, and it's not just the Midwest. Growing up in California there was a chain of stores called Lucky and 99% of people called it Lucky's.

Yeah, it's the same in Chicago. Goes beyond stores to Soldiers Field and Wrigleys Stadium (yes).brian wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 5:05 pm

Comiskey Park isn't pluralized, it's just changed to Cominskey.

Raises hand. Guilty. Not across the board, but definitely with Meiers and Krogers. It doesn't sound right at all to say it in the singular.brian wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 5:05 pm

People call it meijers here. And Kroger’s. And fucking Walmart’s.
You know what you need? A lyrical sucker punch to the face.
Re: Happy Inauguration Day (and beyond- The Biden Presidency Thread part I)
I haven't heard the soundbite, but I feel with places like that it's more "possessive phrasing" than "pluralization."
I'd call Osco Drug "Osco's" growing up or Kroger "Kroger's" now. It's a proper noun and you're going to their store. Or even "Aldi's" when I lived in Germany. (And I called it "Lucky's" too when I lived in Salinas.)
Doesn't help that other similar places are "Albertsons," "Shaw's," Arizona regional supermarket "Bashas" and "Trader Joe's" amongst others.
Edit: Googling now, "Bashas" is actually a plural possessive. The family is named "Basha" and they add the 's' with the apostrophe after it.

Re: Happy Inauguration Day (and beyond- The Biden Presidency Thread part I)
We had Osco in Southern California for a while and they were renamed to Sav-on. The rumor was that it was because "Osco" sounded like a Spanish term for vomiting.
e:
Wikipedia wrote:The name "Osco" did not resonate well with Sav-on's southern California customer base. American Stores eventually made the decision to change the name of the former Sav-on stores back to Sav-on Drugs. Rumors circulated at the time claiming that the reason for the name change back to ‘Sav-on’ was due to "Osco" having the same pronunciation as the Spanish word "asco" (oss-ko), which means "nausea" or "disgust", a considerable factor within southern California's heavily Hispanic market. This explanation for the name change was refuted by American Stores.[4]

I get all of them except Walmart. WTF, Kentuckians? Interesting that Wegmans added the "s" the Wegman family name but didn't pluralize it.

So what happens if one of Biden's nominations don't get the votes for confirmation.. Does he then just chose someone else to go through the process again?
I don't see Neera Tanden getting the votes.

Bernie said that he felt that Vilsack was too tied to corporate agriculture and not concerned enough with family farms.
It's a legit gripe. It doesn't hurt for Bernie to cast a protest vote when the guy is getting confirmed anyway.

Re: Happy Inauguration Day (and beyond- The Biden Presidency Thread part I)
No idea. I think it is going to depend on Manchin and Sinema, since I don't think any Republicans will be on board.
I think it's likely that *a* relief bill will pass the Senate, and it will be a huge ton of money. But it probably won't be the full $1.9 trillion Biden asked for, and it might not include a nationwide $15 minimum wage (which isn't really Covid relief anyway, but if they can get away with it, why not).
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: Happy Inauguration Day (and beyond- The Biden Presidency Thread part I)
I wonder if they even have time to work on relief with all the time being spent trying to get Tanden approved.

I'm thinking Manchin is probably being offered all sorts of shiny things by the GOP if he'd switch parties.

Don’t worry, Brian, this is what they’re going to focus on fighting for. Maybe they could offer reducing minimum wage a dollar?
