Friday Music Discussion - Movie Songs Named For The Movie

Post by brian »

That sounds more confusing than it is.

We were watching The Running Man last night which has a purpose-written closing credits song relating to the movie, essentially a staple of 80s cinema. To wit:

So my question to all of you, what are your favorite closing credits songs specifically written for that movie?

I guess almost every James Bond movie qualifies?

Moonraker is a ridiculous movie, but may have the best song if you haven't heard it:

Not sure, but it's also John Parr, just like The Running Man.

Just to turn the topic on its head my wife’s favorite 80s move is Some Kind of Wonderful which is named after a famous song which isn’t on the soundtrack.

Her fave song from the movie is

Really? RtS is one of a handful of movies that my sister and I watched over and over as kids on video and I would have sworn that was over the (opening? closing?) credits.

I'm 99.9% positive I've never heard it on all my viewings of the movie. It had a sort of Latin Jazz soundtrack and no vocals.

It’s real. I always think about that one too. If it was in the movie it was late closing credits though or relegated to the soundtrack. The song was a minor hit after the movie though.

As was a theme in the beginning of the Running Man thread I haven’t watched Romancing the Stone end to end since middle school so don’t listen to me. Except Eddie Grant spoke to me almost as soon as brian mentioned this

That’s a legit Mandela Effect thing if that song is in the closing credits or not.

The movie fades with a shot of Jack's sailboat in NYC set to mentioned jazz (w some heavy sax). I think the Grant jam comes after that song, mid-credits.

One movie series took this to lunatic extremes. It made the Bond films seem sane by comparison. I'm referring to Cannonball Run of course.

For Cannonball Run II they got Menudo!

I assume “The Promise” was pre-written for Napoleon Dynamite.

(I totally misread the first post as something about credits songs written for the movie but I’m just leaving this here for whoever wants to re-remember a great song.)

What about songs named for a movie?

Silent Running (Mike & the Mechanics)

Or (though Martha Davis denies it) Suddenly Last Summer?

If you didn't know, that's the love interest from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and the voice of a bunch of cartoon characters.

(Absolutely agree on the movie being great and a good choice for this, btw.)

Also at the risk of potentially triggering Brian, that song sounds vaguely Mellencamp-ish.
