Had buddy that took film studies. He took a Noir class that I'd sneak into anytime they were showing films.

Wish I didn't cut the cord or I'd be calling in sick tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up. Took a noir class in college, and really enjoyed it.

Also - YouTubeTV FTW. I'm recording all of these.

ETA - Shit, I don't have TCM!

I am a big fan of Georges Simenon and his Inspector Maigret books (I think there are 100 of them!).

Finally caught one of the recent TV adaptations (on BBC Canada) starring Rowan Atkinson and I was very impressed. Perfectly captures the tone of the books.

If you:

-Don’t mind subtitles (or speak German.)
-Have Hulu.
-Are interested in shows about the Cold War.

Then you’ll probably really, really like Deutschland 83 (season one) and Deutschland 86 (season two). Cold War spy show about East Germany.

One final season - Deutschland 89 — set during the time of the Berlin Wall falling — coming in a year or two

I haven't watched much SNL this season, but that's more due to time rather than not wanting too. After hearing about the Weezer sketch this weekend, I decided to watch Matt Damon and it was pretty hilarious ("no offense, but drink my blood"). This one is both hysterical, spot-on, and surprisingly moving towards the end.

Yeah, after a few rough weeks, this weekend's SNL was one of the best in a very long time. Having a guy as good as Matt Damon helps a lot. He's really good in that format, and I was really surprised to hear this is only the second time he's hosted.

The most disappointing ep of the season was Seth Meyers. I'll be lazy in critiquing it: They were just trying too hard.

I agree with SNL players not being able to hold it together is annoying, but for some reason, Bill Hader breaking character, especially as Stefon, makes a funny sketch gut-busting.

My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

I heard an interview with Bill Hader where he explained that his co-writer John Mulaney would insert new jokes every time he did Stefon. So Hader was seeing some of the absurdity for the first time as he read it on air.

Yeah, Hader was really good at not breaking, which made Stefon that much funnier.

The thing with Leslie Jones is that she's better when she's the featured person. When she's peripheral, she has too much time to think about the absurdity of whatever's going on.

That Weezer skit was hilarious.

Some of the great sketches of SNL history have folks not holding it together. Fallon and Sanz for Cowbell and Spade in the original Matt Foley.

This week was strong. I also found the Weekend Update ending where they were reading jokes written by each other just a good concept.

We've covered this turf. The problem with Fallon is that he leaned on it and/or wasn't good enough to keep his shit together. It's awesome when something causes people to lose it on occasion. It just loses its charm when it happens regularly. And when it happens in sketches that just aren't all that funny, it really becomes an issue (Jones is, by far, the worst on this front.)

Dexter sucks. There’s literally almost nothing I like about the show. The cinematography is nice I guess. But everything else - the premise, the writing, the acting — all sucks.

My wife was so into it a few years ago - I loathed it. Maybe it's just that I have trouble with extreme violence and the fetishization of serial killers, but I found it to be quite offensive.

Aside from the shitiness of Fartbook, it's the rapid dialogue, and the fact a lot of us know people exactly like these characters.

Not for everyone, but it's miles above 98% of sitcoms.

The Wife and I are LOVING this show. She knows the Brit from some other royal-based show and is floored by the difference in the two roles.

She's ABSOLUTELY brilliant in this role so far... Just a really wide range and she goes from deadpan killer to sweet young woman in such a flash it turns your head.
